KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaican economy is expected to record growth ranging between 0.5 and 1.5 per cent over the July to September quarter according to Director General of the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ) Colin Bullock. He was addressing the PIOJ’s quarterly media briefing on Tuesday August 27 at the institute’s office in Kingston.Bullock said the growth should be spurred by a number of factors, including the continued rollout of several capital projects approved in the 2013/14 budget. He said that the gradual restoration of investor confidence, contingent on Jamaica passing of the first quarterly International Monetary Fund (IMF) performance review, and continued global economic recovery, will also drive economic activity.Bullock also pointed to the anticipated return to positive performance for most industries reflecting resurgence in output following the impact of Hurricane Sandy. Meanwhile, mining and quarrying, and construction were the key performers during the April to June quarter, where the economy contracted by 0.4 per cent.Mining and quarrying recorded growth of five per cent, while the building component of the construction sector grew by 1.5 per cent.Bullock said the figure for mining and quarrying reflected increased production of alumina, “as crude bauxite production declined.”“Alumina production increased by 8.6 per cent, reflecting an increase of 1.1 percentage points in the alumina capacity utilisation rate, reflecting higher output from a major producer,” he explained.Like our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/jamaicaobserverFollow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/JamaicaObserver

Police pull over Justin Bieber

LOS ANGELES, California, (AFP) — Justin Bieber was stopped for running a stop sign and driving without a licence Wednesday, in the Canadian teen sensation’s latest run-in with traffic police, a spokesman said.

The 19-year-old was pulled over while driving his white Ferrari at 4:30 am near his home in Calabasas, northwest of Los Angeles, said LA County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Steve Whitmore.“I don’t know how many times he’s been stopped out there driving, but he has a history,” Whitmore said, referring to Bieber’s growing list of brushes with the law.In June, Los Angeles police investigated an incident in which a car driven by Bieber hit a paparazzo, but not to press charges. The previous month he made headlines after neighbours in his exclusive Calabasas neighbourhood — where neighbours include the family of late pop icon Michael Jackson — accused him of driving recklessly through the area.Bieber, a Canadian by birth, bought his Calabasas home in June, according to celebrity news website TMZ. New California residents are required to get a driving licence in the western US state within 10 days of moving there.“If someone has a residence in other state or country, he or she can have a licence from that state or country as well as one from California,” said Whitmore.“But it was within the authority of the deputy who stopped him to issue him a citation for driving without a valid California licence if he wanted and the deputy did just that.”A friend who was following in another car took the wheel of Bieber’s car and drove him home, the spokesman added.

True grit brings financial success

Recently, a reader shared that his secret for success was based on the four-letter word ‘grit’. His recipe to get ahead in life was to stay focused on his tasks, find ways to overcome any obstacles that might arise along the way, and work diligently and consistently until his goals were realised.

Speaking on a TED Talks Educational video, psychologist Angela Lee Duckworth explained that grit is “passion and perseverance for very long-term goals”. Grit is having the stamina to keep working at your important tasks every day, over many years, until you have accomplished your objectives.Duckworth, an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania who researches educational achievement, posited that grit is a better indicator of a student’s success than factors such as IQ. This trait may be even more critical than natural abilities or other determinants of achievement.Grit trumps talent“Talent doesn’t make you gritty,” Duckworth asserted. “There are many talented people who do not follow through on their commitments.” In fact, the psychologist revealed that research showed that a person’s level of grit is often unrelated or even inversely related to measurements of talent.Aesop’s fable of the hare and the tortoise is a perfect example of grit in action. Although the tortoise had less natural ability to run than his faster contender, the slower creature’s resilience won the race. With grit, you will keep plodding on towards the finish line, no matter how long it takes.Grit influences your goalsLike educational achievement, true grit is also essential when it comes to personal success. Many people fail to accomplish their goals, whether simple or expansive, simply because they lack the fortitude to continue taking the required steps until they have attained their objectives. The problem is that many people give up too soon. If immediate results are not forthcoming, they believe that their efforts are in vain and quit working at the task. It’s important to understand that success is not instantaneous; it is a “progressive realisation of a worthy goal”, as Earl Nightingale declared.Grit affects your moneyPersons who lack grit in their money tasks are less likely to attain financial success. For example, if they decide to make a budget to control their overspending, they don’t have the grit to keep track of costs and fill out all their expense items until they have calculated their monthly income shortfall.A deficiency of grit can also cripple people’s efforts in saving and investing. It requires discipline to forgo immediate gratification and consistently put away money towards a future benefit; without this level of fortitude, it will be difficult to amass significant and lasting wealth.Grit improves your workThomas Edison is credited for the quote, “Genius is one per cent inspiration and ninety-nine per cent perspiration.” The prolific inventor emphasised the importance of persevering and working hard over long periods when he declared that “Everything comes to him who hustles while he waits.”Many people say that they want to earn more money, yet they are not prepared to work hard for a long time to get it. They will often try different ways to generate part-time income, but a lack of stamina leads them to quit their money-making ventures at the first signs of rejection or failure.Developing true gritIf you recognise that you lack the grit required to achieve your money goals, the good news is that this trait is learnable. Once you have decided on your overall objectives, identify the tasks that are needed to accomplish them, and slot these activities into your daily or weekly schedule. Many people stop working at their tasks because their early efforts are not impressive or successful. Understand that if you practise an activity every day, over time you will become very accomplished at it. Just commit to keep practising until perfection comes, and you will be displaying true grit.Direct your grit wiselyOne reason why gritty people succeed is that they have tunnel vision when it comes to their goals and ignore the naysayers who try to discourage them. Unfortunately, they may also become inflexible about making directional changes when circumstances require them to adjust their strategies.Although you may be willing to go all-out in your efforts to achieve your goals, it’s important to ensure that your efforts are properly directed in the first place. Grit can actually be negative if you are working on the wrong goals or if your activities are not aligned with your objectives.I like this quote from actor Will Smith who grittily declared, “I’m not afraid to die on a treadmill. I will not be outworked, period. You might have more talent than me; you might be smarter than me… but if we get on the treadmill together, there’s two things: You’re getting off first, or I’m going to die.”Cherryl is a money coach, business mentor, and founder of Financially S.M.A.R.T. Bolt chases greatness

ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) — Usain Bolt aims to achieve greatness with a third Olympic triple gold-medal haul at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

“To actually go to Rio and win again would be a feat in itself,” Bolt said yesterday, speaking ahead of the Weltklasse Diamond League meeting. The Jamaican will run in the 100 metres today after a World Championship sweep in the 100, 200 and 4×100 relay in Moscow, where he talked of working hard to attain “the greatness thing”.He completed the same triple at the past two Olympics and is focused on repeating in Rio.“For me, the key thing is just to go to defend my titles, and that’s my focus,” Bolt said. “It would be the first time anybody has ever won three times in a row.”Bolt became the most decorated athlete in World Championships history this month, with his career tally of eight golds and two silvers lifting him above American great Carl Lewis.Three more golds for Bolt in Rio would still leave him trailing Lewis’ Olympic track and field record of nine golds and one silver.“I won’t be adding a fourth event in Rio, for sure,” said the 27-year-old Bolt, whose 34th birthday could fall during the 2020 Summer Games.Bolt’s news conference was held at FIFA headquarters, across the city from the stadium where he will today.Bolt was greeted on arrival by FIFA President Sepp Blatter, and later accepted a blue FIFA football shirt bearing his name and the Number 9.Blatter joked that nine seconds was probably the limit for Bolt, whose 100m world record set in 2009 stands at 9.58.Bolt suggested he was capable of running in the 9.70s at Weltklasse, where a warm, still evening is forecast.“I have got a lot of rest,” said Bolt, who last year in cool, wet conditions set a Weltklasse meet record of 19.66 in the 200m. “This track is always a fast track and I’ve run some fast times here.”He ran a season’s-best 9.77 in Moscow and rivals today include worlds runner-up Justin Gatlin of the United States and Jamaican bronze medallist Nesta Carter.Though Bolt is the star attraction, the sold-out Letzigrund stadium will also focus on stellar fields for the men’s high jump and women’s 5,000m.Last month in Switzerland, Bohdan Bondarenko barely failed to clear 2.46 metres at the Athletissima meeting in Lausanne, which would have lifted him above a cherished record in track and field.Cuban great Javier Sotomayor’s 20-year-old mark of 2.45m survived another challenge by the Ukrainian when taking the world title in Moscow.“Many people wait for the world record. I can’t just decide when I jump the world record, or I would do it,” said Bondarenko, who looked forward to competing in a more relaxed setting today. “I think this is good because emotions get in the way of jumping.”Ethiopian rivals Meseret Defar and Tirunesh Dibaba rarely race each other outside of major championships, yet the winners of the past three Olympic titles over 5,000m will clash over that distance in Zurich.“It’s a prestige-laden race — and yes, it’s very expensive,” said meet director Patrick Magyar, describing his efforts to make the match as perhaps the toughest of his career.Magyar also accepted Caster Semenya of South Africa, who missed the worlds through injury, into the 800 metres after taking the word of her coach, Maria Mutola, who holds the record for wins at the prestigious Weltklasse meet.“If Maria tells me Caster is in shape to beat anybody in this race, I have to believe her,” said Magyar, who has a special send-off planned for a retiring American long jump star.Dwight Phillips, the 2004 Athens Olympics gold medallist and four-time world champion, will compete in his final competition at the age of 35.ZURICH, Switzerland — Jamaican sprint sensation Usain Bolt admires a football shirt carrying his name and the number ‘9’ after it was presented to him by FIFA president Sepp Blatter (left) at FIFA headquarters here, yesterday. North Korea ship "broke embargo"

29 August 2013 Last updated at 01:04 ET The North Korean-flagged cargo ship Chong Chon Gang sits docked at the Manzanillo International container terminal on the coast of Colon City, Panama, 14 August, 2013. The container ship Chong Chon Gang has been held in Colon since 16 July Panama says an undeclared Cuban weapons cargo found on a North Korean ship is an “undoubted violation” of the United Nations’ arms embargo on Pyongyang.

A draft report by UN experts sent to Panama after the seizure of the ship in July confirmed a breach of sanctions, the ministry of public security said.

Two North Korean diplomats are in Panama to assist the ship’s 35 crew.

Cuba said it shipped the arms to North Korea for repair. It did not say why they were hidden under tonnes of sugar.

A source in the public security ministry said authorities had been given a first draft of the report compiled by UN sanctions panel experts, the AFP news agency reports.

A man works in a container with the MiG-21 jets found inside the North Korean Chong Chon Gang vessel where an alleged Soviet-built radar control system for surface-to-air missiles was found, at the Manzanillo Port in Colon, Panama on 21 July, 2013. One of two Soviet-made fighter planes found inside the North Korean vessel

The ship, the Chong Chon Gang, was seized on suspicion it was carrying drugs.

The vessel had been navigating the Panama Canal.

The statement from the Panamanian public security ministry was released after the North Korean diplomats – from the country’s mission in Havana – visited the crew members at a former military base.

They are being detained on suspicion of arms trafficking; an offence which carries a 12-year prison sentence.

The United Nations inspectors completed their work two weeks ago but are yet to present their official findings publicly.

The Chong Chon Gang left Russia’s far east on 12 April and travelled across the Pacific Ocean before entering the canal at the start of June, with Cuba as its stated destination.

The ship disappeared from satellite tracking systems after it left the Caribbean side of the canal, resurfacing on 11 July.

Experts say this may indicate that the crew switched off the system that automatically communicates details of their location.

It was stopped near Manzanillo on the Atlantic side of the canal on 15 July.

Under United Nations sanctions, North Korea is banned from weapons exports and the import of all but small arms.

Li, Radwanska win early to avoid rain at US Open

NEW YORK, USA (AP) — Li Na got her work done quickly yesterday at the US Open, so when the rain started falling, she had little to worry about.

The fifth-seeded Li defeated Sweden’s Sofia Arvidsson 6-2, 6-2 in the day’s first match at Arthur Ashe Stadium to advance to the third round. Shortly afterward, heavy rain came and Li’s only concern was finding an umbrella.“It’s tough for them,” she said, referring to the 58 players who still had singles matches to complete yesterday. “For me, just relax all day and do whatever I want.”Five matches were wrapped up before the rain, including 18th-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro’s 6-3, 6-4 victory over American CoCo Vandeweghe and third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska’s 6-0, 7-5 victory over Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor of Spain.Radwanska dropped only seven points during a 21-minute first set, but the second lasted 66 minutes. Long, but not too long.“Sometimes it’s good to play first, even when I have to wake up really early,” Radwanska said, referring to the rain.Other early winners were 32nd-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and, on the men’s side, one-time top-10 player Marcos Baghdatis.Serena Williams’ match was scrubbed from yesterday’s schedule. After a rain delay ate up most of the afternoon, tournament officials postponed eight women’s singles matches but kept others on the slate, including the night session involving defending men’s champion Andy Murray and American Sloane Stephens. With the storm bearing down, video monitors around the Billie Jean King Tennis Center warned fans to seek shelter and avoid trees because of potential lightning, though thousands of ticketholders were milling about without much concern for severe weather. Many are used to this scene. The season’s last Grand Slam tournament has finished a day late for five straight years because of rain delays. This year, the US Tennis Association announced plans to build a roof over Arthur Ashe Stadium as part of a renovation project that will cost $550 million. The roof could be ready by 2016, or 2017 at the latest.Even that wouldn’t have alleviated a first-week logjam the likes of which the tournament faced yesterday, with a full slate of matches in singles along with men’s, women’s and mixed doubles.During a brief halt to the storm, 2009 men’s champion Juan Martin del Potro made it onto the court, earned an early break against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain, then had to go back to the locker room when the rain returned. Next door, at Armstrong Stadium, Venus Williams played two points against Zheng Jie, then went inside again.Li was among the few who could plan on watching those matches from her hotel room.NEW YORK, USA — Venus Williams of the US throws a towel over her shoulders as rain begins to fall during her match against Jie Zheng of China during their US Open 2013 women’s singles match at the USTA Billie Jean King National Center here, yesterday. Shanachie backs reggae/soul album

FOR many years, Shanachie Records has been one of the world’s leading sources for indigenous and roots music. In terms of reggae, its catalogue includes revered recordings from the music’s golden age of the 1970s.

Shanachie has, however, reached out to a younger audience in the last decade. Currently, the company is putting its promotional muscle behind 9INE, a reggae/soul album by American singers Syleena Johnson and Musiq Soulchild. To be released in September, the set is produced by Kemar ‘Flava’ McGregor, a leading figure in dancehall/reggae. Randall Grass, Shanachie’s president, spoke to Splash recently about plans for 9INE.“Our promotion strategy is aimed both at the reggae and R&B market, especially Musiq and Syleena’s fan base. We are servicing reggae radio in Jamaica, the US and UK, but also urban radio in the US and R&B/soul radio in the UK,” he explained.Grass says a dancehall mix of Feel The Pain, the album’s lead single, will be serviced to club DJs worldwide. Music Soulchild and Johnson are also expected to do shows in the US next month as part of 9INE’s promotion.According to Grass, Shanachie’s involvement with 9INE seemed natural. The label released Johnson’s previous album, Labour Pains, while Musiq Soulchild appeared in a music video by The Floacist, a soul poet signed to Shanachie.9INE is the latest effort by the New York-based company to reach a contemporary audience. Like Rounder Records in Massachusetts, Shanachie is known for its vast catalogue of roots music, which includes titles by reggae acts Augustus Pablo, whose East Of The River Nile album marked the company’s association with Jamaican music in 1978.Shanachie also has albums by Dennis Brown, The Mighty Diamonds, Culture and the Wailing Souls in its catalogue. In recent years, it has released new albums by Third World as well as a slate of smooth jazz and neo-soul acts including singer Crystal Bowersox, the 2010 American Idol runner-up.Johnson told Billboard magazine early this year that the collaboration with McGregor resulted from a tape he sent them of a new sound he was working on. It impressed her and Soulchild enough to consider doing a song with him but once they got into the studio, the project evolved.“The music was so good and Musiq and I both love Kemar’s production so we’re like, ‘why don’t we just do an album together’,” she said.Johnson and Musiq Soulchild are part of the neo-soul explosion that took place in the United States during the mid-1990s. McGregor is best known for producing Etana’s I Am Not Afraid and Mama Don’t Cry by Gyptian.Kemar ‘Flava’ McGregor, Syleen Johnson and Musiq Soulchild.

Brazil raises interest rate to 9%

28 August 2013 Last updated at 20:21 ET Brazilian real coin Economists believe Brazil’s central bank will raise rate again later in the year Brazil has raised its benchmark interest rate to 9% from 8.5% in a further attempt to rein in inflation.

The central bank’s monetary policy committee, the Copom, voted unanimously for a third straight half percentage point rate rise.

The Copom left the door open for more hikes by reiterating that the latest rise is part of an ongoing rate-adjustment process.

A fall in the value of Brazilian real has stoked inflation, currently 6.15%.

The currency’s fall has been blamed on an outflow of capital triggered by expectation that the US Fed will end its stimulus policy, leading to a stronger dollar.

The real has lost 20% of its value against the dollar since the start of the year.

Other emerging nations, including in southeast Asia, have suffered similar currency problems.

Higher interest rates would help Brazil control inflation, and also bolster investors’ confidence, the International Monetary Fund said in a report on Wednesday.

Fabio Akira, chief Brazil economist at JPMorgan, said further rate hikes were likely. He is forecasting a 50 basis points rise in October and another 25 points rise later in the year.

Last week, the real fell to as low as 2.45 to the dollar, its lowest level since December 2008.

THE National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) yesterday began the replacement of 439 garbage drums in town centres and selected communities in Kingston and St Andrew. The replacements are being undertaken by its regional body, the MPM Waste Management Limited, and is a continuation of an initiative launched by the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development last December.“Over the past eight months, we have placed over 2,000 drums in town centres and communities in Spanish Town, Old Harbour and May Pen. The placement of the drums has encouraged persons to containerise their solid waste by using the provided receptacles and complements the efforts of the MPM Waste Management Limited to rid streets and communities of solid waste and garbage pile-up,” the NSWMA said.“Additionally, we are experiencing reduced turnaround time for the cleaning and clearing of solid waste by the sanitation teams in areas and communities where drums have been placed,” the garbage collection company added.

Brazil"s universities take affirmative action

28 August 2013 Last updated at 18:53 ET By Julia Carneiro BBC Brasil, Rio de Janeiro Antonio Oliveira Antonio Oliveira has benefited from the “quotas” in the first semester since the law came into effect Twenty-four-year-old Antonio Oliveira was born into a poor, mixed race family in the state of Maranhao in north-east Brazil.

As a teenager he had to balance his time between school and helping his parents harvest vegetables to sell at a farmer’s market, and doing other small jobs to scrape by.

Until recently, he says the only prospects for those growing up in his city, Colinas, were to work with crops or to get a post at the city hall – “a mediocre job that people think is heaven,” as he puts it.

But Antonio has just finished his first term studying Economic Sciences at Rio de Janeiro’s prestigious Federal University (UFRJ), a dream he had nurtured since his days at a rural public school.

His placement represents a radical change in the Brazilian university system.

Competition for places

A new law approved a year ago reserves 50% of spots in Brazil’s federal universities for students coming from public schools, low-income families and who are of African or indigenous descent.

I hope I will get a good job after university and be able to give my parents more comfort as they grow old”
End Quote Antonio Oliveira Student The number of posts reserved for black, mixed race and indigenous students will vary according to the racial make-up of each Brazilian state.

Ten years ago affirmative action gradually started being adopted in both state and federally funded Brazilian universities, in an attempt to give underprivileged Brazilians better chances of getting free higher education – and thus access to better jobs.

Half of Brazil’s population is of African descent, but the country’s public universities tend to reflect the Brazilian upper classes – who are mostly white.

Although these universities are free, those who traditionally made it in usually came from expensive private schools. Students from public education – the majority of whom are black or mixed race – were less likely to secure one of the highly competitive places.

Now the “quotas” are mandatory in all of Brazil’s 59 federal universities, which have until 2016 to reserve half of their positions for affirmative action.

Controversial issue Antonio Freitas Antonio Freitas says the country is moving backwards with the quota policies

“I think this is a life-changing opportunity,” says Antonio. “I hope I will get a good job after university and be able to give my parents more comfort as they grow old.”

But racial quotas have sparked widespread controversy in Brazil. Many who are against them argue that easing access to higher education denies the principle of merit that brings excellence to universities.

“This is bad for the future of Brazil, because the main objective of universities is research, is to achieve quality,” says Antonio Freitas, provost of the Getulio Vargas Foundation, a prestigious private university.

“Eventually you may not have the most qualified people in engineering, in medical school, in the most challenging areas which Brazil needs to develop.”

Mr Freitas says Brazil is trying to solve a problem artificially. Instead of giving everyone good basic education, and thus conditions to compete as equals, the government is “trying to force students without preparation into university”.

Quota critics also argue that Brazil has never before had public policies based on race and that this establishes divisions in society. They say that promoting these policies would contradict Brazil’s national identity, where most of the population is mixed race.

Slavery legacy Continue reading the main story
Quota students have a new opportunity, and they grasp it and study like crazy”
End Quote Ricardo Vieiralves Rector, State University of Rio de Janeiro Before the Quotas Law was introduced for federal universities, the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) was a pioneer of affirmative action.

After 10 years, rector Ricardo Vieiralves says their experience challenges critics’ arguments and says the quotas programme has been successful.

He says there are fewer dropouts among students admitted through quotas, and they are the ones who graduate the fastest.

“They have lower grades in the beginning but are level with the others by the middle of the course and sometimes excel non-quota students in the end.”

Mr Vieiralves says Brazil was unprepared for the abolition of slavery, which came to an end 125 years ago but its legacy has impacted generations of Brazilians of African descent and left deep racial inequality within the country’s society.

“Brazilian studies always showed that poor and black people did not make it into higher education. University was a place for the elites.

“Quota students have a new opportunity, and they grasp it and study like crazy,” says Mr Vieiralves.

Breaking expectations Continue reading the main story Brazil has almost 200 million residents, around half of whom are black or mixed raceIn 2012 the average income of a white worker in Brazil’s six main state capitals was 2,237 reias a month; for a person of African descent it was 1,255 reiasIn 1997, the rate of black or mixed race students aged 18-24 attending universities in Brazil was 2.2%. Last year it was 11%Since the Quotas Law was introduced, the number of posts reserved in federal universities for underprivileged Brazilians has doubled from 30,000 to 60,000

Sources: Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and Group of Multidisciplinary Studies of Affirmative Action (IESP/UERJ)

In Brazil, poverty and a darker skin colour often coincide. On average, black or mixed race people earn little over half of what white Brazilians do.

Those of African descent spend on average two fewer years at school than the country’s white population. With less education, many African-Brazilians only manage to get basic jobs.

Joao Feres Jr, a political scientist at the State University of Rio de Janeiro, says it is “undeniable” that there is still racial discrimination in Brazil. He believes quotas are necessary not only to level inequalities but also to challenge expectations.

“You grow up in a society where you never see a black person in a position of power or high status, so you learn to associate black people [with] menial jobs, [with] low paid-jobs.

“Even people who are not actively prejudiced build up this kind of expectation,” he says. “I think the affirmative action breaks with that.”

University ‘gap’

But even as the university system tries to level the playing field, the Brazilian job market still largely reflects the white elite.

Less than 30% of Brazil’s employers are black or mixed race. But some companies are trying to change the make-up of their workforce.

IBM is one of them. Logistics procurement manager Warley Costa is in charge of a human resources group that aims to increase racial diversity at the company in Brazil.

Warley Costa Warley Costa, who is mixed race, is in charge of promoting racial diversity in IBM Brazil

But when the company announces job opportunities, only a small number of Afro-descendents come forward as candidates, he says.

“We see a gap on the university level. There is a small number of black people being prepared to go into university and to fill market positions that are open.”

The company liaises with universities, high schools and institutions linked to Brazilian black communities to attract and better prepare candidates.

“We are trying to support them in order to give them better conditions to fill the job opportunities we have open,” says Mr Costa.

He says the number of black or mixed race employees has been growing by about 3% a year in IBM Brazil, which employs close to 20,000 people.

“Today I can say that we are ok reflecting the Brazilian population inside our team. We have a big diversity here. We don’t have gaps. But we are trying to grow, as much as possible.”

Barbados requests FB information on three citizens

News

Thursday, August 29, 2013

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — Barbados has made a request of the social networking website, Facebook, for information on the use the social media site by three of its citizens.Barbados is the only Caribbean Community country to have made such a request, so far.Facebook has, for the first time, published data on how often governments around the world request data on its users, and according to the social network, Barbados made three requests on three individual users in the last six months.Facebook did not specify the nature or type request but said it set “a very high legal bar with each individual request in order to receive any information about any of our users”.There has been no official comment from Bridgetown but Facebook has outlined the conditions under which requests are accepted from Governments.“As we have made clear in recent weeks, we have stringent processes in place to handle all government data requests. We believe this process protects the data of the people who use our service, and requires Governments to meet a very high legal bar with each individual request in order to receive any information about any of our users.“We scrutinise each request for legal sufficiency under our terms and the strict letter of the law, and require a detailed description of the legal and factual bases for each request. We fight many of these requests, pushing back when we find legal deficiencies and narrowing the scope of overly broad or vague requests.“When we are required to comply with a particular request, we frequently share only basic user information, such as name,” Facebook said.It said that it hopes the report published at https://www.facebook.com/safety/groups/law/guidelines/ will be “useful to our users in the ongoing debate about the proper standards for government requests for user information in official investigations.“And while we view this compilation as an important first report, it will not be our last. In coming reports, we hope to be able to provide even more information about the requests we receive from law enforcement authorities,” Facebook added.

FIFA receives complaint of racism against Nigeria coach Keshi

Sport

Thursday, August 29, 2013

ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) — FIFA has received a complaint of racism against Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi after he described a rival as “a white dude” who didn’t know about Africa and who should go back to his native Belgium.FIFA declined to comment further yesterday and only said it had received the complaint against Keshi, who led Nigeria to this year’s African Cup of Nations title in South Africa.Malawi coach Tom Saintfiet said the Football Association of Malawi reported Keshi for comments apparently made on an African TV show, where Keshi said Saintfiet was “crazy” and “mad” for suggesting the southern Nigerian city of Calabar was unsafe for a World Cup qualifier between the countries next month.Keshi went on to say the Belgian “is not an African person, he is a white dude. He should go back to Belgium”.Saintfiet said that if FIFA is serious about tackling racism in football, it has to “take it seriously in both directions”.FIFA toughened its punishments for racism at its recent annual conference in Mauritius in May after incidents in England and Italy where black players were targeted, but a white coach accusing a black coach of racism is rare.“If a European said something of this nature about an African, you would have a huge problem. I am against racism in all directions,” Saintfiet told the BBC.The Nigeria Football Federation did not immediately respond to requests for comment.CONCACAF president and FIFA vice-president, Caymanian Jeffrey Webb, heads FIFA’s Anti-Racism and Discrimination Task Force.

Fast food protests underway in US cities

NEW YORK (AP) — Fast-food protests are under way in US cities including New York, Chicago and Detroit, with organisers expecting the biggest national walkouts yet in a demand for higher wages.

Similar protests organised by unions and community groups in cities over the past several months have brought considerable media attention to a staple of the fast-food industry — the so-called “McJobs” that are known for their low pay and limited prospects. But it’s not clear what impact, if any, they will have on business. In New York, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn joined about 300 to 400 protesters in a march before flooding inside a McDonald’s near the Empire State Building on Thursday morning. Shortly after the demonstration, however, the restaurant seemed to be operating normally and a few customers said they hadn’t heard of the movement. The same was true at a McDonald’s a few blocks away. The lack of awareness among some illustrates the challenge workers face. Participating workers, who are asking for US$15 an hour, still represent a tiny fraction of the industry. The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, which works out to about $15,000 a year for full-time employees. The movement comes amid calls from the White House, some members of Congress and economists to hike the federal minimum wage. But most proposals seek a far more modest increase than the one fast food workers are asking for, with President Barack Obama wanting to boost it to $9 an hour. The Service Employees International Union, which represents more than two million workers in health care, janitorial and other industries, has been providing financial support and training for local organisers around the country.Organisers say the strikes will hit more than 50 cities on Thursday, following a series of strikes that began last November in New York City. The biggest effort so far was over the summer when about 2,200 of the country’s millions of fast-food workers staged a one-day strike in seven cities.Ryan Carter, a 29-year-old who was walking out of the McDonald’s where workers demonstrated on Thursday, said he “absolutely” supported workers demand for higher wages.“They work harder than the billionaires in this city,” he said. But Carter, who was holding a cup of the chain’s coffee he bought for $1, said he didn’t plan to stop his regular trips to McDonald’s.McDonald’s Corporation and Burger King Worldwide Inc say they don’t make decisions about pay for the independent franchisees that operate the majority of their US restaurants. Wendy’s and Yum Brands Inc, which owns KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, did not respond to requests for comment.Workers were also expected to walk off their jobs in cities including Atlanta, Boston, Hartford, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Many targeted restaurants will likely be able to stay open, however. The strikes were announced earlier, giving managers time to adjust staffing levels.

Platini not sure he"ll run for FIFA presidential office

Sport

Thursday, August 29, 2013

PARIS, France (AFP) — UEFA president Michel Platini says he remains unsure whether he will run for the same post at the head of world governing body FIFA when current president Sepp Blatter’s mandate expires in 2015.“I am in the middle of thinking whether it is good or not good, but I will certainly say something at Dubrovnik (the Croatian city where the next UEFA executive committee meetings will be held on September 19 and 20),” the Frenchman told sports daily L’Equipe.“I am obliged to say something because everyone is expecting me to express myself,” added the 58-year-old, who enjoyed a glorious playing career that peaked in 1984 when he captained France to their first European Championship.“It is not a simple decision. People will fight each other to have the position of FIFA president, but not me.“I have to determine whether it is a good thing for football. I was Michel Platini, I won three Ballon d’Ors, I was the best player in the world. To be number one in the world, I’ve already done that in football but not in the corridors.“I have to convince myself that it’s my destiny and it’s good for football, because I am very happy at UEFA.“In any case, to choose between FIFA and UEFA is not to be condemned to prison or a work camp.”Platini replaced Sweden’s Lennart Johansson in 2007, while Blatter has been in office since 1998 when he succeeded Brazilian Joao Havelange. The Swiss, 77, says his fifth term will be his last, but there are rumours he may be set to change his mind and run for re-election.“I don’t know what he will do,” continued Platini.“I will take my decision alone without worrying about Sepp. In the beginning (2011), he said he would stop in 2015. Now he is saying he will explain his decision in one year in Brazil.“He has said I am his natural successor, but there is no deal between us even if it’s true that today I am a legitimate candidate to go to FIFA.” PLATINI… people will fight each other to have the position of FIFA president, but not me
