AFTER making a cameo on Twerk It, the hit song by Busta Rhymes, Nicki Minaj and Pharell, Jamaican singer Tosh Alexander is keen to take centre stage with upcoming releases. The 25-year-old deejays in Twerk, the lead song from Busta Rhymes’ new album, Extinction Level Event 2.Alexander says for the past six years she has collaborated with he and Pharell, but Twerk is her debut release with two of hip hop’s most successful acts.“When I was contacted to play that role I was kinda sceptical as I am more of a singer. This type of music doesn’t necessarily represent Tosh. I don’t stick to one genre as I do soul, pop and of course reggae,” she said.Tosh sings on Killamanjaro and Bad Girl, her latest songs. The former is a reggae track produced by Brian Stanley.Alexander was born in Kingston and briefly attended Immaculate Conception High School. She migrated to the United States at age 13.Her music career started just one year after moving to the US when she became a member of the girl group, Xclusive.During her time with Xclusive, Alexander says she met Michael Manley, former guitarist with Rhythm and Blues group, The Commodores, who arranged vocal training for the budding singer. It is not all music for Alexander, who has worked with top dancehall producers like Tony Kelly. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations and Communications from Florida International University.TOSH ALEXANDER…when contacted to play that role I was kinda skeptical
