Category 5 Jamaica Productions makes leap to reggae

After scoring a hit in the dancehall arena with production of the ‘Wounded Dog’ rhythm, Jahema Myers, Steven Henry and Marvin Moodie, the creative trio of Category 5 Jamaica Productions, have crossed over from dancehall to reggae with the release of the ‘Frame A Mind’ rhythm.

Unlike the fast-tempo and comical ‘Wounded Dog’, ‘Frame A Mind’ is a mellow and relaxing production that sets a meditative mood.

The new rhythm features prominent artistes including Warrior King with One For Me, Delly Ranx with Pree Life, Bling Dawg with Closer To God, Esco with Working Hard and Quick Cook with Neva Fall. The 10-track project also features up-and-coming artistes Influential and Samboni.

According to Myers, they were surprised at the attention Wounded Dog has received.

“It was just an experiment, but people actually liked it. For this rhythm now, the guitarist just had a different feeling, it was just a more laid-back vibe. Maybe the next project will be a hardcore dancehall vibe,” he told THE WEEKEND STAR.

After recently slamming several local reggae artistes for their unprofessionalism, Borjan Tisma has now turned his attention to the dishonest promoters applying their trade in Europe.

Just over a month ago Tisma, who is based in Poland, stressed that some of the artistes are killing the reggae music business due to their unethical ways. He also warned them against recording hate music towards homosexuals because Europe has grown to become less tolerant.

Now Tisma, who does bookings for Lady Saw, Anthony B, Konshens, Gyptian, RDX, Iba Mahr and several others, has shifted his focus on to his own counterparts stating that their dishonesty is also contributing to the decline of reggae music.

“Some of the EU reggae promoters are unprofessional because many do not have the budget to keep a high show with high profile reggae artistes, which leads to tour cancellations,” he said.

Whenever this becomes the case, Tisma reveals that the promoters then try to be cunning by relying on presale tickets which may or may not sell quickly.

“Without a proper budget and funding the promoters cannot promote properly and try to promote shows with only Internet promotion,” he added.

Because of this, booking agents such as Tisma feels the burn. “With a limited budget, some promoters try to avoid a booking agent and work directly with the artistes. Whenever they cannot fulfill their obligations they simply disappear and cannot be found,” he said.

Some promoters are also reluctant to meet the demands of the artistes they seek. These range from accommodations, food to backstage requirements.

“Jamaican artistes have special dietary concerns and some European promoters don’t understand this. Also, the unity is not there and so we have dates clashing,” he said.

Tisma is currently working with Contractor Music Marketing, owned by Sean Edwards, to coordinate several tours with some of Jamaica’s biggest reggae artistes.

Reggae Boyz 83rd in the world, but Costa Rica big mover in latest FIFA World Rankings

The latest FIFA world rankings shows CONCACAF’s Costa Rica as one of the confederation’s best teams.

The world cup quarter-finalists climbed 12 places to 16th place, just below the United States who fell two places to 15th.  Mexico inched two places to 18th, but bucking the trend of regional teams qualifying for the world cup was Honduras, who slipped  7 places to 40th.

The Reggae Boyz are ranked 83rd, a fall of two places.

Germany’s World Cup title has seen them return to the top of the world rankings for the first time in around 20 years. Argentina are placed second, an improvement of three places, with the Netherlands leaping 12 rungs into third after their impressive world cup third place finish.

Deposed world champions Spain slumped seven spots to their new modest placing of eighth, while disappointing Brazil dropped four spots to seventh.

With his second album Honest, laden with hits such as I Won featuring Kanye West, I Be U and Never Satisfied featuring Drake, the 31-year-old rapper has been described as melodious in the way he stretches his musical notes, creating a never ending list of hits. The rapper is more than ready to take the stage on Saturday, July 19, International Night II, of Reggae Sumfest.

One Love reggae festival to feature Freddie McGregor and other top acts

The famous Niagara Falls tourist spot on the Canada-United States border is bracing for the inaugural staging of the concert, One Love at the Border.

The reggae-soul-funk festival will feature a diverse mix of acts such as Freddie McGregor, Errol Dunkley, Lakeside and Con Funk Shun.

The three-day show kicks off July 4 and will be headlined by singer Faith Evans, who emerged during the neo-soul movement of the 1990s.

The show is the brainchild of Jamaican Andrew Stephens, a senior partner in the Real Music Group, promoter of One Love at the Border. The Niagara Falls attraction will be transformed into a mighty moving stream of red, green and gold, using strategically placed lights to give a decidedly Rastafarian feel to the event.

“The idea for this is to not only celebrate past and present multi-genre music legends and create a stage for uprising local artistes, but to bring everyone together from different backgrounds, cultures and communities from both sides of the border,” he said.

Stephens has promoted numerous shows in Canada and the United Kingdom through his Unison Entertainment Enterprise. Last year, he joined with Thomas Tripodi and Tony D’Ambrogio to form RMG.

One Love at the Border is the company’s first major promotion. Stephens said they have received support from the Niagara Parks service, which runs Niagara Falls, but RMG is footing most of the bill for the debut event.

International reggae star Mykal Rose delivered an incredible set during the recently concluded Sierra Nevada reggae festival held in Boonville, California between June 21 and 23.

“I had a really great time with Sly and Robbie. The fan response was amazing, we rocked the venue, we had a good time, the fans had a good time. Reggae music still has the ability to bring people of all creeds, colours and religions together,” he said.

Mykal Rose is in the middle of his ‘Showdown in a Bloody Town’ tour of the USA.

Earlier this week, the former lead singer of Black Uhuru teamed up with Inner Circle, aka the ‘Bad Boys of Reggae’ and with a young artiste called Bizerk to create a brand new World Cup anthem called All About The Ball. Rose has also teamed up with Canadian rapper Snow of Informer fame to do a song called Shame, which will be released soon.

“It was great being in the studio with Snow, and people are going to love the song when it is released in July. It was produced by Kent Jones and Kool and Drake in a studio called Record Room Studio, in Florida. It was an amazing experience,” he said.

Later this week, he will jet off to the ‘hippie festival’ in Oregon in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. He will be headliner on the annual ‘Reggae On the River’ show in California before ending his tour on July 4th with a festival in South Carolina.

An appearance on internationally acclaimed music festival, Reggae Sumfest, is every artiste’s dream, and for a dancehall act, his sights are firmly fixed on Dancehall Night to show off his skills.

Come July 17, Pree Money singer, Kalado, will have his moment with the stars as he makes his official debut at the festival’s home in Catherine Hall, Montego Bay.

“Last year, Bounty Killer started the process when he called me on during his set and I did a little thing. Honestly, it lasted less than a minute, but it was a thrilling experience. The crowd response was very encouraging and it has definitely whet my appetite,” the Alliance Next Generation (ANG) artiste, who is managed by Nancy Davis, said.

One year later, Kalado’s profile is soaring and he has amassed a string of songs which have secured his rite of passage straight onto the Sumfest official line-up. Songs such as Personally, Good Good – which is heading towards anthemic status – Body Nuh Dead, Make Me Feel and Take a Ride are all part of the entertainer’s steadily increasing repertoire which is currently blazing the dancehall.

The overseas market is also feeling the full force of Kalado, as demonstrated by his visit to Toronto in May, when he headlined his own show at the capacity-filled Blue Diamond Club venue, in front of a very enthusiastic audience. A very ecstatic Kalado noted that he was impressed by the welcome he received in that Canadian city and admits that as a result of the love shown to him by the fans, he exited the stage “almost walking on air”.

The Montego Bay-based deejay has now landed the biggest gig of his career as he has been billed to perform on Dancehall Night during this year’s Reggae Sumfest showcase at Catherine Hall. The artiste is thrilled to be on the line-up of his first major reggae festival.

“I am going to give the fans a memorable performance. It’s been a long time coming for me in the music business and all my hard work is paying off,” Rickey Teetz said.
