THE National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) yesterday began the replacement of 439 garbage drums in town centres and selected communities in Kingston and St Andrew. The replacements are being undertaken by its regional body, the MPM Waste Management Limited, and is a continuation of an initiative launched by the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development last December.“Over the past eight months, we have placed over 2,000 drums in town centres and communities in Spanish Town, Old Harbour and May Pen. The placement of the drums has encouraged persons to containerise their solid waste by using the provided receptacles and complements the efforts of the MPM Waste Management Limited to rid streets and communities of solid waste and garbage pile-up,” the NSWMA said.“Additionally, we are experiencing reduced turnaround time for the cleaning and clearing of solid waste by the sanitation teams in areas and communities where drums have been placed,” the garbage collection company added.
