Murray sets up semis clash with Nadal at Mubadala Champs

ABU DHABI, Dubai (AFP) — Andy Murray set up a Mubadala World Tennis Championship semi-final clash with Rafael Nadal when he battled to a hard-earned 7-6 (7/1), 5-7, 6-4 win over Spain’s Feliciano Lopez yesterday.

Murray, 27, needed five match points before he secured victory and will next look to clinch a double over Nadal in the Abu Dhabi exhibition tournament having defeated the Spanish great in the final in 2009.

“It was really good,” Murray told the www.national.ae.

“We played two-and-a-half hours, and it was a fairly high-quality match. There were some periods in the match, a couple of games, where the level dropped a bit, but there were some good rallies.

“Lopez is a different opponent to most of the players you play on the tour these days, so it was a good test for me, and I am happy I got two-and-a-half hours of good, competitive tennis to start the year.”

Murray said he was looking forward to facing Nadal as the world’s top players use the three-day exhibition tournament for crucial practice ahead of the new ATP season, which gets underway this weekend.

“When you have not played a match after a while, normally you can wake up a bit stiff the next day, a bit sore,” added Murray.

“So I will see how I wake up on Friday, but it is good for me to be able to test myself against Rafa and I will keep trying to improve.

“I am now guaranteed another two matches here, which is perfect and exactly what the players want.”

In yesterday’s late match, Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka eased past Spain’s Nicolas Almagro 6-3, 6-2.

Wawrinka will next face world number one Novak Djokovic in today’s semi-finals.

Sterling lifts Rodgers as Liverpool make semis

Raheem Sterling eased the pressure on under-fire manager Brendan Rodgers as Liverpool swept into the League Cup semi-finals with a 3-1 win over Championship leaders Bournemouth on Wednesday.

Rodgers has endured stinging criticism in recent weeks after Liverpool dropped down the Premier League table and crashed out of the Champions League in the group stages.

A dismal 3-0 defeat at arch-rivals Manchester United on Sunday prompted Rodgers to admit Liverpool’s squad lacked the unity that almost carried them to the English title last season.

In the circumstances, an embarrassing defeat to second tier Bournemouth would have been a major blow to the beleaguered Rodgers’ hopes of holding on to his job, but he was able to leave Dean Court with his head held high as Sterling’s double sandwiched a Lazar Markovic strike in a one-sided quarter-final.

“I thought it was a brilliant performance. It was always going to be a difficult job, but we controlled the game. We thoroughly deserved it,” said Rodgers, whose side will face Chelsea in the two-legged semi-finals in January.

“Raheem Sterling has got some stick recently which I find extraordinary. He is a kid of 20 and he has been outstanding for us.

“It didn’t matter who we got in the draw, it was just important to get there – to win this competition you have to win games against big sides.”

Despite their recent struggles, Liverpool had won at Dean Court in the FA Cup last season and, after Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson missed a good chance early on, the visitors took control.

England forward Sterling opened the scoring with a glancing header from close range after Jordan Henderson nodded Markovic’s cross back across goal in the 20th minute.

Rodgers’ relief was clear to see as he celebrated Sterling’s first goal since September by vigorously punching the air on the touchline.

And, with the Reds cutting through the Bournemouth defence at will, Rodgers was on his feet again seven minutes later to salute Liverpool’s second goal.

Philippe Coutinho ignored Bournemouth’s appeals for offside as he cut inside to test Artur Boruc with a low shot and when the ball spun out to Markovic, the Serbia winger kept his cool to sidefoot home his first goal for Liverpool from the edge of the penalty area.

With Liverpool’s supporters making their support for Rodgers loud and clear, Sterling ran clear to net their side’s third goal in the 51st minute as he glided past Tommy Elphick before slotting home.

Former Everton midfielder Dan Gosling got one back for Bournemouth in the 57th minute when his tame shot trickled past a weak attempted save from Brad Jones.

In Wednesday’s other quarter-final, Tottenham thrashed Newcastle 4-0 at White Hart Lane as the Magpies suffered more north London misery.

Five days after a 4-1 beating at Arsenal, Alan Pardew’s side were on course for another heavy defeat from the 18th minute.

Jak Alnwick, a 21-year-old making just his third appearance in goal for Newcastle, made a hash of catching a corner and allowed the ball to slip out of his grasp to midfielder Nabil Bentaleb, who hooked home from four yards for his first Tottenham goal.

Newcastle conceded again 36 seconds into the second half when Nacer Chadli drove a perfectly-placed shot into the corner of Alnwick’s net.

Harry Kane put the result beyond doubt when the Tottenham striker scuffed his shot past Alnwick in the 65th minute and Spanish forward Roberto Soldado added the fourth five minutes later.

Tottenham’s reward was a semi-final tie against third tier Sheffield United, who enjoyed a shock 1-0 win over Southampton on Tuesday.

“We have respect for Sheffield United. They deserve to be in the semi-finals. We expect a tough game,” Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said.

Also on Tuesday, Premier League leaders Chelsea had advanced to the last four with a 3-1 win at Championship side Derby.

W"House, Barbican join H"View, BT in Jackie Bell semis

BY HURBUN WILLIAMS Observer writer

Saturday, December 20, 2014

WATERHOUSE FC and Barbican FC scored identical 2-1 wins against Cavalier SC and Rockfort, respectively, to move on to the semi-final stages of the Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Jackie Bell Knockout competition at Drewsland on Thursday.

Waterhouse will now face Boys’ Town, who scuttled neighbours Arnett Gardens 4-2, while Barbican will do battle against Harbour View, who edged last year’s champions Tivoli Gardens 2-1 in the other semi-final played on Wednesday.

Draw for the semi-final placings were made by KSAFA president AB Stewart Stephenson during the half-time break of the opening game between Barbican and Rockfort at Drewsland.

Mario McDonald, younger brother of Oneil ‘Chippy’ McDonald, put Barbican ahead after 20 minutes, but four minutes later Akeem Higgins unhinged the Barbican defence with the equaliser. The teams continued to battle gamely for the ascendancy with the Leon Mitchell-coached Rockfort FC holding on stubbornly to keep their tormentors at bay and at the same time threatening to upset the apple cart with surprising attacks. However, with 30 minutes remaining, fresh legs from the Barbican bench became Rockfort’s undoing as the diminutive midfielder Shaquille Lewis, who entered the fray six minutes earlier, nipped under the Rockfort radar to beat goalkeeper Neil Morgan for Barbican’s second.

With defeat staring Rockfort in the face, they showed why they are Super League leaders by driving forward with some good dribbling skills and fired away at goal, but Barbican had no intention of relinquishing their lead and held on to reach their second Jackie Bell semi-final in consecutive years.

Waterhouse, who have won the Jackie Bell only four times in their history, had to perform another Houdini act before coming away a 2-1 winner after they once again fell behind at the first hurdle.

Jermaine ‘Tuffy’ Anderson had saved the day for Waterhouse in their second-round match against Humble Lion in the Red Stripe Premier League, but this time it was the much-maligned young striker Jermaine Benjamin, who came up with the two goals that separated the teams to lay the foundation for coach Anthony Patrick to earn his first chance to win a cup as coach of Waterhouse.

Kicking down the slope Oshane Jenkins put Cavalier ahead after 31 minutes and they held stubbornly to the lead for the next 23 minutes. This was before Benjamin sneaked behind the Cavalier defence to squeeze the ball over the line and put the teams back on level terms.

Six minutes later it was a freak of a goal from Benjamin that put Waterhouse into their first semi-final for three seasons.

Tallawahs power into LCPL semis

Jamaica Tallawahs, powered by spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, confirmed their spot in the semi-finals of the Limacol Caribbean Premier League (LCPL) Twenty20 after a six-wicket win over Barbados Tridents at Sabina Park in Kingston yesterday.

The Tallawahs join the Tridents and the Guyana Amazon Warriors as teams to progress to the semis.Scores: Barbados Tridents 113-4 (20 overs); Jamaica Tallawahs 114-4 (18.1 overs). The Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel provisionally pulled into the crucial fourth place — ahead of the Antigua Hawksbills — after a six-wicket win over the St Lucia Zouks in the first game of the double-header at the venue.Scores: St Lucia Zouks 99-5 (20 overs); Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel 105-4 (17.5 overs). In the afternoon feature, the Tridents lost the toss and were sent in to bat first, but could only manage 113-4 on a difficult batting surface that was described as “slow and low” by Tallawahs left-arm orthodox slow bowler Nikita Miller.Opener Dwayne Smith batted through the innings and ended unbeaten on 52 from 53 balls.Smith’s mostly circumspect knock was highlighted by a hoisted shot which flew over deep square leg and onto South Camp Road off seamer Vernon Philander’s full toss.Man-of-the-match Muralitharan, the retired Sri Lankan off-spinning great, grabbed 3-12 off four overs.Buoyed by a vibrant, party-like atmosphere and at least a 90-95 per cent capacity stadium, the home team weathered the loss of early wickets, including those of top Twenty20 batsman Christopher Gayle (five), to reach 114-4 with 11 balls remaining.Andre Russell and rookie Jermaine Blackwood were the batting heroes with undefeated knocks of 27 and 21, respectively. The pair combined to thump 13 runs off the 15th over bowled by medium pacer Rayad Emrit and took a further 11 in the next over delivered by left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan to shape the victory for the Tallawahs.Their unbroken fifth wicket partnership of 49 runs came off a mere 36 deliveries. In the curtain-raiser, the Zouks opener Andre Fletcher top-scored with a 59-ball 46 not out in the total of 99-5. The Red Steel wrist-spinner Samuel Badree ended with 2-18.In reply, Irishman Kevin O’Brien led the way with 37 runs off 33 deliveries, as the Red Steel reached 105-4 with 13 balls to spare.Zouks left-arm spinner Garey Mathurin took 2-24.The Tridents head the standings with eight points from six matches, ahead of the Amazon Warriors and the Tallawahs, who both also have eight, but trail due to respective inferior run rates. The Red Steel are on six points from as many games, followed by the Hawksbills with four from six. The out-of-contention Zouks, on four, have played all seven of their preliminary matches.Up to press time last evening, the Hawksbills were set to battle the visiting Amazon Warriors at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound — a match the hosts need to win to remain in with a chance of reaching the last four.In the final match of the preliminary phase, the Tallawahs welcome the Red Steel to Sabina Park in today’s 2:00 pm fixture. Under-15 contender Jonathan Walker got the competition off to a roaring start when he whipped Geronimo Ross 11/2, 11/0, 11/1. Then All Jamaica Under-17 champion Jake Mahfood dispatched Jason Doyle 11/2, 11/9, 11/13, 11/7, and Under-19 champion Julian Morrison dismissed Eashwam Adams 11/5, 11/4, 11/3.All Jamaica Under-13 champion Adam Ardito lost to Kai Bentick 3/11, 7/11, 3/11, but with the three prior victories safely in hand, the Jamaicans have advanced to the semi-final round. Not to be outdone, the girls’ team also won three of their four matches in convincing fashion.Coming off a third place finish in the individual competition, young gun Mia Lake beat Sasha Broderick 11/5, 11/8, 11/6. We’ve prepared for months to get this far and the results speak volumes about the amount of work these young athletes have put into their games.“The team has gelled as a unit and the whole country can feel proud of their effort and composure both on and off the court.”While upbeat about the success so far, Denis was quick to add that the going would get tougher from here on.“Performance is measured by results and although we’ve put some strong numbers on the board, we’re only half-way through the team event. We’ll face strong competition in the semis tomorrow (today) and we’ll have to be firing on all cylinders to reach both the girls’ and boys’ finals; but I have the utmost confidence in every single player.”
