A gunman killed five people Saturday, including himself, after a shooting in near Atlanta that also left two children injured, authorities said.

Authorities arrived at the Douglasville subdivision of two-story homes, about 20 miles west of Atlanta, after receiving a 911 call around 3 p.m., Douglas County Sheriff’s Lt. Glenn Daniel told The Associated Press.

Daniel said a man came to a house and shot his ex-wife and several children. Investigators have not released the names of the suspect or the victims because their family members have not yet been notified.

Daniel told Fox News that the gunman was among the five killed, and that the shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. MyFoxAtlanta.com reported that two additional children were injured, and taken to a nearby hospital.

It was not immediately clear when the couple divorced or whether the family had prior contact with police.

“I’ve been in law enforcement out here 20 years and this is the worst I’ve ever seen,” Daniel said.

Daniel said that neighbors apparently heard or saw the shooting and came outside to assist the victims until rescuers arrived. Some victims appeared to have been shot inside the residence while others were apparently shot outside.

Investigators obtained a warrant to enter the home, now surrounded by crime scene tape, on Saturday so they could take and exam evidence from the crime scene.

Kenya Beyah, who lives about four doors down from the home where the shooting began, left flowers at the scene Saturday evening. She didn’t know the family but said she saw kids playing outside from time to time, she told The Associated Press.

Delta airlines extends service between St Croix and Atlanta

CHARLOTTE AMALIE, US Virgin Islands, Wednesday September 10, 2014 - St. Croix’s economy will receive a greater boost now that the new Delta Air Lines service between Atlanta and St. Croix will run longer than originally planned.

The United States Virgin Islands Department of Tourism confirmed that the weekly service, scheduled to return to the Territory December 20, 2014 after a long absence, will operate several months beyond the second week of May, as originally planned, and will instead terminate on Saturday, August 15, 2015.

“Delta’s return to St. Croix is great news and adding more flights will positively impact the local economy,” said Beverly Nicholson-Doty, U.S. Virgin Islands Commissioner of Tourism.

The weekly Saturday service will operate between Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Henry E. Rohlsen Airport in St. Croix.

In preparation for the new flights, the Department of Tourism recently spent several weeks in Atlanta and in the Minneapolis feeder market educating consumers, travel agents, tour operators, the media and Virgin Islanders about the Delta service.

“To help attract more people to the Virgin Islands, we’re going back to Atlanta this month to continue spreading the word about travel to St. Croix with Delta’s increased flights,” the Commissioner reported.

The service will operate on MD-88 aircraft with 149 seats, and is backed by a joint marketing strategy between the airline and the Department of Tourism.

Flights are currently available for purchase.

MIAMI, Florida,  (AFP) — Scores of children were safely evacuated from an elementary school in the state of Georgia Tuesday as police responded to reports of shots being fired and arrested a suspect, authorities said.No one was reported injured in the incident involving an “active gunman” in the Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy in DeKalb County, Georgia near Atlanta.“There have been reports of shots fired. WASHINGTON DC — Jamaicans and friends of Jamaica in Atlanta, Georgia, will mark Jamaica’s 51st year of Independence with two major activities from August 4 to August 10.The programme of activities, planned by the Atlanta Jamaican Association (AJA), commences with a Thanksgiving Service at the Hillside Presbyterian Church in Decatur at 5:00pm on Sunday, August 4. The service will feature music, songs and poetry, which capture Jamaica’s cultural heritage.The sermon will be delivered by Professor of Theology at Emery University, The Rev Dr Noel Erskine, while the Rev Dr Barry Davis, will bring a special musical tribute.The celebration comes to close on Saturday, August 10 with the Annual Independence Ball and Scholarship Awards at the Marriott Atlanta Airport Gateway.This spectacular black-tie event which is the premier annual Caribbean event in Atlanta attracts patrons from Georgia and surrounding states.A special feature of this year’s event will be the honouring of Vin Martin, former Jamaican Honorary Consul in Atlanta, who retired from that position at the end of June this year after serving for 16 years. Among those who will paying tribute to Martin, include, US Congressman, Hank Johnson; President of the AJA Errol Ritchie; Dr Erskine and Dr David Panton. Two educational scholarships will be awarded to two students of Jamaican parentage, one from the AJA and the other from the Tropical Sports Club. The AJA Community Service Award will be presented to Ms Jacqueline Hawthorne-Robinson of the Golden Krust Bakery.Prominent show and dance band, The Fabulous Five will provide entertainment.According to AJA president, Ritchie, the annual events commemorating the anniversary of Jamaica’s independence are very important to Jamaicans in Atlanta. “They serve to bring us together in a cultural bond that oftentimes overpowers the individualistic urges that seem to restrict our coming together as a people. “These events bring back memories of our time in Jamaica and force us to reflect on our achievements as a nation and as individuals.
