JLP warns of consequences of VOIP blockage

The Opposition Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) spokesperson on Information, Communication and Technology (ICT), Dr. Andrew Wheatley, is warning of dire consequences, regarding a move to block the use of certain Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP).

Telecommunications providers, Digicel and LIME, have announced that they will block the use of certain VOIP applications on their networks.

In a release on Friday, Wheatley said the move could have an adverse effect on Jamaica trying to encourage greater use of ICT for economic development. He wants the government to state how it intends to create the needed frameworks to encourage ICT development, while permitting the actions announced by the telecoms companies.

He’s also charging the government and the Office of Utilities Regulation, to say how they view the rights of consumers who have paid for access to mobile & data networks to use applications.

He pointed to the need for the Government to accelerate the drafting and to accelerate the drafting and tabling of the promised ICT Act, which would address issues of this nature.
