HE took time to come to the fore from his first outing on July 28 when he finished sixth behind Exel. His first win was recorded on September 13, and now the American-bred by Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown, Bigbrowngreyhope seems to have finally found his footing here in Jamaica under the quiet but effective guidance of long-time conditioner Rowan Mathie.
Racing at the non-winners of three level, going a mile, for the first time on Saturday, Bigbrowngreyhope won in eye-catching fashion, suggesting that his present form is but a tip of what is to come.
With Robert Halledeen in good recent form in the saddle, Bigbrowngreyhope moved from the three-furlong point into a challenging position and after a brief duel with the well-seasoned Locked and Loaded skittered away for what turned out to be a rather comfortable two-and-three quarter-length victory. Locked and Loaded was second, with the improving Zack On The Attack third. The winning time of 1:39.4 is nothing really to write home about, but it is enough to indicate that Bigbrowngreyhope is on a progressive path. He demonstrated class and the ability to fight, two qualities which should aid his future development.
Trainer Mathie is a happy man with the recent development of his charge. “Bigbrowngreyhope has come on very nicely. His progress has been encouraging. I am paying a lot of attention to him, making sure he is ok and happy. He won well on Saturday, and all we can do now is just wait to see how he will perform at the Overnight level,” Mathie said.
The four-year-old grey colt will race next at the Overnight Allowance level. His mettle will be truly tested at this level which is probably the most competitive grouping in racing at the moment.
Let’s us hope that Bigbrowngreyhope continues to make strides, as we dearly need good performers at the higher levels in racing.
