"Dukie" makes the cut

ONE month after winning the ‘Make the Cut’ film-making competition, Lionel ‘Dukie’ Thompson has left the island for a week-long stay at the New York Film Academy.

Thompson said he was looking forward to the stint, which is part of his victory package.

“I won $150,000, so I want to get a better computer, a faster one so I can really push on with what I need to do to become a standout producer,” he said. “I’m excited. I researched the school and it’s a wonderful opportunity for me to go there and meet like-minded people as well as pick up some really important information and make some serious links.”

Under the banner of Drink Right, Red Stripe’s responsible drinking campaign, Make the Cut challenged aspiring film-makers to promote responsible alcohol consumption.

Using the slogan, ‘Right Age. Right Amount. Right Way’, participants were asked to interpret this message in 30-second television commercials.

Thompson’s winning production will be aired on local television.

Aldwayne Tomlinson and Damion Radcliffe were the first and second runners-up, respectively.

Nunes makes strong statement of intent

A clear statement of intent was made yesterday, the first raceday for 2015, by trainer Anthony Nunes to 14-time champion Wayne DaCosta. The statement ,which came after Nunes saddled three winners following the first five races of the 10 on offer, was that Nunes really means business this year. His winners were Royal Assault, the first horse to win a race in 2015, Lord Storm and Locked and Loaded.

“A really good to start the season. I am very happy for the three winners, but it is the start; there is still a very, very long way to go,” Nunes told the Complete Racing Guide.

A rejuvenated Royal Vibes under a never-say-die ride by Shamaree Muir took the feature event, the Caymanas Track Limited (CTL) Fan Appreciation Day Trophy. Royal Vibes (Royal Minister – November Lace), who was sent off as the joint 3-2 second favourite, broke well but was surprisingly held off the pace set by Hologram Shadow (Andre Martin) and stable-companion All Correct (Shane Ellis) for most of the way.

Turning for home in third position, Royal Vibes responded well to the urgings of Muir as the five-year-old bay gelding got up in the nick of time to nip All Correct on the wire, winning by a head in the Overnight Allowance event for three-year-olds and upwards going over 1,820 metres.

Twenty-one-to-one long shot Sir Frederick (Kuri Powell aboard) came in third position. The winning time was 1:56:1 minutes.

“This is an overwhelming victory for me today (yesterday) as I outdid one of best jockeys at the Park in Shane Ellis. I knew that I was going to win the race from the half, but it turned out to be a hard-fought victory. But I am happy with it as a win is win,” Muir told the Jamaica Observer.

Riding high on the charts with his latest single, ‘Trailer Load’, dancehall artiste Razor B was in top form at last weekend’s staging of the Wet Sunshine Water Party, held at Waves Beach in Portmore.

The Canada-based artiste was an instant hit with the crowd, especially the females, as he dived into songs, including We Party, Whine and Stop, Trailer Load, and Whine and Pedal, which connected with the audience.

“I loved the energy from the crowd, and it’s good to see this kind of reaction from the fans,” Razor B said in a media release.

The artiste is confirmed to perform on the upcoming season of the RJR Cross Country Invasion.

“I am happy to be a part of the RJR Cross Country Invasion. Thanks to the RJR team for having me on board, and trust me, the fans are in for a treat,” said Razor B.

On December 28, Razor B’s ‘Show Us the Way, Foundation’ (in partnership with OG Entertainment and Team Razor B) will stage the 7th annual Razor B Family Fun Day at Roserun Way in Waterford, Portmore.

“The purpose of this event is to give back to my community and to show the children that they, too, can aspire to do big things and that someone cares,” Razor B explained.

The event has been held each year since 2008. Children are treated to a day of fun comprising rides, bounce abouts, water slides, face painting, and various games. Refreshment and food are provided for them all.

Prior to migrating to Canada in 1993, Razor B resided in Waterford for 18 years.

Razor B’s debut album, #pontarget, is expected to be released shortly. Cater To You is his newest single.

InterCaribbean Airways makes next move to cross-link Caribbean

InterCaribbean Airways was yesterday scheduled to start offering flights originating from Kingston to Port-au-Prince, Haiti as part of its move to cross-link the Caribbean.

It’s the latest company to announce plans to fill vacant slots from inoperative airlines.

The carrier, in a news release Friday, said it was set to begin scheduled services yesterday between Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, Jamaica and Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and also Port-au-Prince to Santo Domingo International Airport.

“With high hopes for this service, the business and leisure traveller will be able to enjoy this new service in just an hour of travel time,” added the release.

InterCaribbean stated that bookings are currently available. Checks by the Jamaica Observer found quotes of roughly US$260 plus US$60 taxes one-way from Kingston to Port-au-Prince.

“We are pleased to offer these new routes to give more choices and more connectivity across the Caribbean and support Haiti as it grows its appeal to the vacation visitor, while facilitating new business opportunities. We look forward to increasing the frequency and number of destinations we serve in the new year,” the news release quoted the regional carrier’s CEO Trevor Sadler.

InterCaribbean added that “these new services will extend the travel options for the visitors to neighbouring islands as an easy means to travel to Haiti and extend their vacation stays”.

The airline, formerly Air Turks & Caicos, received an injection of capital, a new business model and updated colourful livery on its planes earlier this year.

Jamaica Air Shuttle and Skylan Air in recent times offered similar service but are now inoperative.

InterCaribbean founder and chairman Lyndon Gardiner previously told the Jamaica Observer that his airline can remain operative by synchronising connectivity to passengers coming from the UK and US on other airlines.

Gardiner, a former banker, started the company in his 20s financed by loans to initially secure his pilot’s licence. He eventually secured another loan to finance the acquisition of a Cessna Skyhawk, which he used to offer chartered services before expanding to scheduled international services.

In February 2014, InterCaribbean announced plans to connect Jamaica with the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. It is rare for airlines to connect the Anglophone, Francophone and Latin Caribbean due to cultural and economic barriers. The new service will, however, avoid the circuitous travel via Miami, USA or Panama on legacy carriers.

In that same month, InterCaribbean also announced plans to offer cross-country flights within Jamaica.

Based in the Turks & Caicos Islands, the carrier has been operating for 23 years. It has a fleet of six turboprop aircraft with another six in various stages of maintenance. It connects the Turks & Caicos to the Bahamas, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico. It plans to offer flights to the Eastern Caribbean as its next expansion drive.

What makes you indispensable?

What makes you indispensable to a client? So indispensable that she treats you as a valued partner and pays you well for a sustained period of time? The obvious answer is to have clearly demonstrable expertise in areas she values. This alone will open doors and close deals for you.

It won’t ensure long-term loyalty, however.

To become truly indispensable requires a human connection that nurtures trust. Integral to this type of connection is Shared Identity, Shared Empathy and Shared Understanding.

Three Essential Elements for Connection

Shared Identity results from a mutual commitment to a mission and/or set of values. If you have a passion for aircraft then working for a client who shares that passion will help you connect with him. Likewise, if you value transparency and frequent communications then having a client who shares those values will help you connect. Other things being equal, the more values you share, the greater the connection.

A second way people connect is through Shared Empathy. If you and your client have similar interests and you experience similar emotions while discussing those interests together, it increases connection. For example, you may both get excited talking about college basketball or know what it’s like to have a family member battle cancer. Understanding what’s important in your client’s life will help you identify common ground topics that lead to connection.

Shared Understanding is the third way to connect on a personal level. Connection is increased when you ask questions of your client and carefully listen to her answers so that you understand her perspective. After you’ve taken time to understand her perspective and shared your response in a way that accounts for it, your connection will grow even stronger. The field of contract law uses the term “a meeting of the minds” that captures the idea of Shared Understanding well. Developing a Shared Understanding requires listening carefully, probing continuously to clarify ambiguity and having the patience to persevere. More complex topics take a greater amount of time to reach a Shared Understanding than simple topics do. Dealing with people who are more open and naturally more trusting will also speed up the time required to reach a Shared Understanding.

Avoid This Trap

There is an important trap to watch out for. Behavior that puts your interest ahead of your client’s interest undermines connection. Even the perception of this will be damaging. That’s why it’s wise to carefully think through the benefits and potential objections your client might have, then plan how you will clearly communicate to avoid even the appearance of self-interest.

When you bring a client needed skills and steadily work to increase connection, you’ll become an indispensable trusted partner. That’s when you can ask your client if there is anyone else he knows who might benefit from hearing about your work. Doors will open for you to add new clients and begin building connections with them.

With the increase, the Bank of  Jamaica says the NIR is now at more than US$2.2 billion.That’s the highest it has been since June 2011.  At current levels the NIR is capable of  purchasing just under 5 months of  imports.

Category 5 Jamaica Productions makes leap to reggae

After scoring a hit in the dancehall arena with production of the ‘Wounded Dog’ rhythm, Jahema Myers, Steven Henry and Marvin Moodie, the creative trio of Category 5 Jamaica Productions, have crossed over from dancehall to reggae with the release of the ‘Frame A Mind’ rhythm.

Unlike the fast-tempo and comical ‘Wounded Dog’, ‘Frame A Mind’ is a mellow and relaxing production that sets a meditative mood.

The new rhythm features prominent artistes including Warrior King with One For Me, Delly Ranx with Pree Life, Bling Dawg with Closer To God, Esco with Working Hard and Quick Cook with Neva Fall. The 10-track project also features up-and-coming artistes Influential and Samboni.

According to Myers, they were surprised at the attention Wounded Dog has received.

“It was just an experiment, but people actually liked it. For this rhythm now, the guitarist just had a different feeling, it was just a more laid-back vibe. Maybe the next project will be a hardcore dancehall vibe,” he told THE WEEKEND STAR.

Thorpido makes music industry debut

Marvin Lloyd Thorpe is better known by his stage name Thorpido. Thorpido is a reggae recording artiste and songwriter.

He is best known for his hit single Teach Them The Way, which peaked at at No. 1 on CVM TV Hit List video Chart.

Thorpido was born in Kingston on July 23, 1986. In 1991, he moves to Pembroke Hall, St Mary. At the age of nine, while enrolled at the Jeffery Town All-Age School, he developed a passion for music while listening to the likes of Buju Banton, Capleton, and Bounty Killer. Thorpido would write songs consisting of four lines and sing them aloud with his brothers.

After leaving Tacky High School, which he represented in both football and cricket, he continued his musical journey, and in 2004, he started recording songs with his brothers and friends.

By 2007, Thorpido had written dozens of songs and performed on several stage shows. In 2010, he released his first single, Evil Deeds, on the Assault rhythm under the Kaos Production Label. He performed on TVJ Smile Jamaica and got radio play also.

Thorpido has now released new single Down In Jamaica on the bitter winds rhythm under Doobie Production, a label from Sweden. He is looking to do fairly well in the music industry.

MIT makes breakthrough in probe of businessman's murder

The Major Investigation Task Force ( MIT) has made a breakthrough in the investigation into the murder of St. Andrew businessman, Robert Mendez.

Mendez, who operated Payless Car Mart off Maxfield Avenue in St Andrew, was shot dead by gunmen on April 1.

Video footage of the businessman being shot in his office was shown on Television Jamaica (TVJ)in May. The MIT is reporting that it has arrested and charged one of the suspects. He’s John Jarrett, 43, otherwise called “Tucker and “Wasp” of a Balcolmbe Drive address.

Superintendent Michael Phipps, head of the St Andrew Branch of the MIT, told RJR News that Jarrett was charged on Friday afternoon.

Jarrett who was picked up last week was seen on the video footage trying to remove a bracelet from Mendez’s hand after he was fatally shot.

Superintendent Phipps was tight-lipped on the status of the second suspect, but RJR News understands that he was captured in Canada on Thursday.

The suspect, who was seen shooting the businessman in the video, was nabbed by Canadian law enforcement agents following a request by the local police.

The suspect, who lived in Canada for sometime, has been arrested for immigration violations and is expected to be deported to Jamaica.

Kingston makes UN highest murder rate survey

Kingston, Jamaica’s capital, has been listed among an international survey of world cities with the highest murder rates, The WEEKEND STAR understands.

According to www.theguardian.com, who published the top 10 list on Tuesday, data from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) shows the most up-to-date available homicide rates per 100,000 people for the most populous cities of 137 countries.

The WEEKEND STAR gathered that the Americas overtook Africa as the region with the highest murder rate in 2012, with eight of the world’s 10 deadliest cities found there.

Kingston sits on the list at number 10.

The data shows that Kingston, Jamaica, has a murder rate of 50.3 per 100,000 people in 2011.

The UNODC numbers capture intentional homicide, defined as ‘unlawful death purposefully inflicted on a person by another person’.

Additionally, the report stated that a total of 328 people were murdered in Kingston in 2011, significantly down on previous years.

Raging Prospect makes easy work of New Year"s Day trophy race

ON a day dedicated to honouring the fans of racing, Raging Prospect, under a collected ride from top apprentice Shamaree Muir, easily won the feature event, the Caymanas Track Limited Fan Appreciation trophy over 1,820 metres.

The five-year-old chestnut gelding by He’stherealthing-Raging Fury, after being close to the leader Miracle Star for much of the race, made a decisive move three furlongs out and was never in danger of losing, winning in a time of 1:55.1 minutes. Second went to Miracle Star with Exotic Gold third, but the second and third placing were later reversed by the stewards of the race meeting. Raging Prospect, who is trained by Fitzroy Glispie, won by eight lengths.All Correct, after only one appearance in 2013, returned to racing with a bang under the astute guidance of jockey Dick Cardenas to win the 1,300 metres (6 1/2 furlongs) New Year’s Day trophy event.Having spent most of his time on the farm last year, All Correct, trained by Wayne DaCosta, finally released some of his three-year-old promise with a dogged performance, as after being harassed for most of the stretch drive by the in-form Piscean Rocket, held on to win by a neck in a respectable 1:19.1 minutes. Princess Shaniel, who prompted the early pace, was third.The distinction of winning the first race of the season went to Safe Passage, ridden by champion jockey Dane Nelson and trained by young conditioner, Nicholas Edwards.The new year proved to be one of promise for apprentice rider Sadiki Blake, who rode the first winner in his career, which started in September of 2012, when he won on the 53/1 chance Pocket Money in the day’s ninth race, section two of the McKay Security Limited trophy.“This is a real joy for me. I have been trying for so long and I have waited and waited, then it happened. I am so happy, and what a way to start the new year. Ah happy, really happy,” an emotional Blake said after returning to the winners’ enclosure. The first section of the McKay trophy race was taken by Cause For Concern ridden by Richard Mitchell.At the end of the first day of racing for 2014, Dane Nelson rode two winners (Safe Passage and Valid Image), as did Omar Walker (Locked and Loaded and Anntrack) and Dick Cardenas (Double De Honey and All Correct).Champion trainer DaCosta saddled two winners, Double De Honey and All Correct. 28 July 2013 Last updated at 09:50 ET Syrian state media images showed heavy damage to Khalidiya’s buildings Syrian government forces have taken most of the Khalidiya neighbourhood in the central city of Homs, one of the few remaining districts there under rebel control, activists and media say.

The army had launched an offensive in the area on Saturday.

Rebels had held Khalidiya for more than a year in a city seen as a symbol for the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.

The capture reflects a series of recent gains by loyalist forces.

The UN says more than 100,000 people have been killed in the 28-month conflict in Syria, with a further 1.7 million Syrians forced to seek shelter in neighbouring countries.

Hezbollah accusation

The pan-Arab television station al-Mayadeen said 80% of Khalidiya was now under the control of government forces.

One Syrian army officer said: “Only the northern sector is left and that will be liberated within 24 hours.”

Footage showed heavily damaged buildings, piles of rubble and smashed concrete.

Activists said that only the Old City of Homs and a few other districts remained under rebel control.

They accused Lebanese Hezbollah fighters of taking part in the offensive.

Homs is a strategically important city, linking the capital Damascus to the coast.

Attempts at holding a peace conference on Syria have been delayed by differences between international powers, particularly Russia and the US, and doubts about whether all sides within the country would attend.

Scoliosis makes life miserable for youngster

LIFE has been difficult for 16-year-old St Catherine resident Linton Blake.

Other than the pain and discomfort that he is forced to live with, Blake, who suffers from scoliosis, is unable to participate in activities similar to other children in his age group.Last Friday, the life of the teenager took a dramatic turn, thanks to an announcement by Scotiabank Foundation which offered to sponsor the $500,000 it will require to complete his surgery.Blake is one of eight children who will benefit from Scotiabank’s Scoliosis Care Programme.The children between the ages of 14 and 16 years old were selected by the Kingston Public Hospital based on the severity of the condition, length of time on the waiting list, age, and financial need.“Young people affected by scoliosis experience severe pain, disruption in their education, and a range of social challenges,” said Joylene Griffiths-Irving, executive director of the Scotia Foundation.She said that since 2006, Scotia has assisted some 40 persons by funding their corrective surgeries at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH).Medical Technologies Limited is also an important partner and has provided the screws at a discount and this year will donate sets of screw to cover two surgeries.The condition of Scoliosis, is hereditary and it is estimated that some 90,000 Jamaicans, including Olympian Usain Bolt, are affected by the condition at varying degrees of severity.With the surgery, students are expected to return to school in September, walking upright, and with a brighter outlook on life.“I am very happy about the opportunity that Scotiabank and medical officials have given to me, as I believe this will only help to improve my outlook on life,” said Andre Campbell.He is one of the recipients who will this year be benefiting from the programme.The others are Andre Campbell, 17, Roshay Graham, 14, Yanique Holness,16, Rose-Marie Shearer, 17, Tajera Silvera, 16, Linton Blake, 16, and Chennel Smikle, 15.Dr Ian Neil, head of orthopedics at the KPH who has partnered with Scoliosis Care since its inception, said that the list of persons in need of surgery grows each year.As a result he has invited persons and organisations to support the ScotiaFoundation or to contact KPH directly to help with covering the cost of surgeries for these young people.The waiting list for children in need of surgery to correct scoliosis at the KPH is between 50 and 70. Merger makes world"s biggest ad firm

28 July 2013 Last updated at 08:50 ET Maurice Levy will soon co-head the biggest ad firm in the world France’s Publicis and US firm Omnicom have announced a merger to create the world’s biggest advertising company worth $35.1bn (£22.8bn).

Omnicom chief executive John Wren and Publicis Groupe boss Maurice Levy are to become joint CEOs.

Each firm’s shareholders will hold about 50% of the new Publicis Omnicom Group.

The firm will be listed in Paris and New York and will employ more than 130,000 people.

Among the well-known industry names that are in the combined company are BBDO, Saatchi & Saatchi, and Leo Burnett.

‘Dramatic changes’

“The communication and marketing landscape has undergone dramatic changes in recent years including the exponential development of new media giants, the explosion of big data, blurring of the roles of all players and profound changes in consumer behaviour,” said Mr Levy.

“John and I have conceived this merger to benefit our clients by bringing together the most comprehensive offering of analogue and digital services.”

Publicis Groupe shareholders will receive one share of the new Publicis Omnicom Group for each Publicis share they own and a special dividend of 1 euro per share.

Omnicom shareholders will receive 0.813 shares of Publicis Omnicom Group for each Omnicom share they own, together with a special dividend of $2 per share, plus quarterly dividend payments.

The companies see savings of $500m from the merger, and the deal is expected to be finalised by the end of the March 2014. They say the merger should be “tax-free” and the holding company based in the Netherlands.

The new Publicis Omnicom Group will overtake UK rival WPP in size.

This is the second of an eight-part series looking at reggae summer festivals around the world. Today, we feature Croatia’s Seasplash Festival.WITH its 10th anniversary a matter of days away, promoters of Croatia’s Seasplash Reggae Music Festival believe the event has grown from strength to strength.This year’s show takes place July 18-22 at Fort Punta Christo, in Stinjan, near the seaside city of Pula. A diverse roster of acts including British artistes Adrian Sherwood, Zion Train and Newham Generals, German singer Jahcoustix and Twilight Circus from The Netherlands will perform.Promoter Vedran Meniga, in an interview with the Jamaica Observer, said the festival started slowly, with less than 1,000 persons attending the first show.“Nowadays, we have no less than 5,000 people daily on site,” he said.Several popular names in classic and contemporary roots-reggae have performed at Seasplash including Earl 16, Prince Alla, the Twinkle Brothers, Daddy Freddy, Perfect Giddimani and Lutan Fyah.Meniga says fans can expect something different this year with the festival’s first sound clash. There will also be a seminar on the history of reggae and a deejay workshop.According to Meniga, Seasplash is endorsed by authorities in Pula. He says it brings strong business to the area and is a precursor to the Outlook Festival, which takes place in August.Outlook is a popular drum and bass event that also attracts thousands of fans.Croatia was once part of the former Yugoslavia, a bastion of the communist Iron Curtain. After years of sectarian conflict, Croatia became a sovereign state in 1992.Meniga says the musical tastes of Croatians reflect global trends.“Most of the young people listen to low-quality, mass-consumed music.
