Bahamas wins bid to host 2017 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup

MIAMI, USA — The Bahamas Football Association (BFA) was selected by the FIFA Executive Committee at its meeting yesterday in Marrakech, Morocco, as host of the 2017 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup.

This marks an important landmark in the history of the Caribbean as The Bahamas will become the first country in the region to host a senior FIFA tournament.

“It is an honour and privilege for CONCACAF to welcome such an appropriate tournament to the Caribbean region,” said CONCACAF President Jeffrey Webb. “Congratulations to the Bahamas Football Association for their timely efforts in securing the bid to host the next FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup. We wish them all the best in the ongoing preparations for this historic event and look forward to extending the Caribbean’s warmth and hospitality to all qualified teams in 2017.”

Led by a strong vision of development, CONCACAF has been steadily gaining presence in the international football arena by promoting the progress of its Member Associations and committing to the full range of opportunities for growth. Beach Soccer has gained increasing momentum and popularity since the first World Cup in 2005.

Riding high on the charts with his latest single, ‘Trailer Load’, dancehall artiste Razor B was in top form at last weekend’s staging of the Wet Sunshine Water Party, held at Waves Beach in Portmore.

The Canada-based artiste was an instant hit with the crowd, especially the females, as he dived into songs, including We Party, Whine and Stop, Trailer Load, and Whine and Pedal, which connected with the audience.

“I loved the energy from the crowd, and it’s good to see this kind of reaction from the fans,” Razor B said in a media release.

The artiste is confirmed to perform on the upcoming season of the RJR Cross Country Invasion.

“I am happy to be a part of the RJR Cross Country Invasion. Thanks to the RJR team for having me on board, and trust me, the fans are in for a treat,” said Razor B.

On December 28, Razor B’s ‘Show Us the Way, Foundation’ (in partnership with OG Entertainment and Team Razor B) will stage the 7th annual Razor B Family Fun Day at Roserun Way in Waterford, Portmore.

“The purpose of this event is to give back to my community and to show the children that they, too, can aspire to do big things and that someone cares,” Razor B explained.

The event has been held each year since 2008. Children are treated to a day of fun comprising rides, bounce abouts, water slides, face painting, and various games. Refreshment and food are provided for them all.

Prior to migrating to Canada in 1993, Razor B resided in Waterford for 18 years.

Possible jet skis operation in Long Bay Beach

NEGRIL, Westmoreland — TOURISM Minister Dr Wykeham McNeill has expressed the likelihood of the Long Bay Beach area of Negril being used as a launch area for jet ski operations.

“There’s a discussion on now,” said McNeill, “we got the okay and basically it looks like it is going to be Long Bay. UDC [Urban Development Corporation] will give a portion of that to Long Bay Beach Park and they will do a commercial operation there.”

He added: “All jet skis will launch from there, both public and private.”

Since July 18, the operation of private personal watercraft (PWCs) or jet skis was reopened across the island for licensed PWC users. This after an islandwide ban was imposed in February to allow for the regularisation of the commercial operations and for steps to be taken by the Maritime Authority of Jamaica to register all PWCs or jet skis in the island.

A ban remains on the importation of PWCs until further notice.

There are approximately 28 registered jet skis in Negril.

It was also disclosed that craft will only be permitted to operate in daylight hours and should enter and leave the shore using a designated launch area (a permitted area for operation between 20 and 40 metres wide). The launch area will also allow operators to go about business 200 metres out at sea.

In Ocho Rios, St Ann, the UDC beach is being used as a launch area.

During a recent address to the Negril Resort Board at the Rayon Hotel in Negril, McNeill said that there was no formal designated area for operation in Negril.

“The formal thing has not come to me as yet, so it is not possible for them to operate legally,” said McNeill.

Dr McNeill further explained that individuals will be allowed to operate outside of resort areas. He said, in the resort areas and public beach spaces, only designated launching areas will be allowed for jet ski operations.

MONTEGO BAY, St James — ORGANISERS of the inaugural staging of the Soul in the Sun Musical Festival to be held in Montego Bay from October 10-12 are promising excellent music and great food at the beach party, scheduled for the SeaWind Beach Club on the last day of the event.

“After having had two nights of live musical bliss, the event closes out at SeaWind Beach Club for what promises to be a day of music and good vibes,” said Junior Taylor, the producer of the festival.

“We felt that there was no need to hurry home after the live concerts and SeaWind Beach Club agreed, so other than great music being played all day, there will be great food and lots to drink as the beach club will be pulling out all the stops for patrons,” he said.

The live concerts, which will be held at the Aqueduct in Rose Hall will feature Keith Sweat, Johnny Gill, Dru Hill, Silk, LUST, Jeffrey Osborne, Peabo Bryson, Regina Belle, Freddie Jackson, Howard Hewitt and Richie Stephens.

According to Taylor, the beach party will also feature music from yesteryear by three well-known deejays from “back in the day”. These include Collin Hines, Yohann Stephens and Turbo, who are all still relevant in the entertainment business.

The beach party, he said, begins at 12 noon and ends at 8:00pm.

A British national who was vacationing in Jamaica drowned at Frenchman’s Cove beach in Portland about noon on Tuesday, while swimming.

He is 47-year-old Paul Martin Browkman. Police sources say that Browkman, who was on a trip from St Ann, allegedly went swimming with his wife, shortly after arriving, despite being warned by a life guard on duty not to go into the sea as the choppy waters and rough seas might be too dangerous for them to handle.

According to the police, the life guard’s warning was brushed aside, as Browkman told him (the life guard) that he had swam in rougher water many times before while in England.

Drowning

Shortly after, however, the two (wife and husband) got into difficulties and the life guard went to their assistance. He managed to pull the wife ashore, before returning for the husband.

But upon his return, the husband remained motionless and despite administering CPR, there was no change in his condition.

The two were then rushed to the Port Antonio Hospital some eight miles away, but the male tourist was pronounced dead upon arrival. The wife was treated and released.

Since the drowning incident, the police have issued a stern warning to locals and tourists to be extra careful while swimming at Frenchman’s Cove beach, as not only is the water rough and dangerous, but the ocean floor is uneven. Consequently, persons can be walking in the water and suddenly step off into a deep area.

Venomous has also expressed confidence in his ability to please the crowd on Sunday.

After a terrific performance at Amnesia nightclub in Ocho Rios in June, Venomous is expecting to give another wonderful performance at Shades Pon De Beach.

Dancehall artiste Versatile is once again set to host his annual birthday event at the Shanshy Beach in Portland on Sunday.

Dubbed ‘Beach Cawvingz’, the event will feature artistes such as I-Octane, Aidonia, Popcaan, Chino, Laden, Stephen ‘Di Genius’, Bramma, Chi Ching Ching, Iyara, and others.

“Last year, we had a great turn-out. The vibes did mad. Last year, we had Beenie Man, I-Octane and Popcaan and, on the turntables we had ZJ Liquid and Ashile. This year, we have ZJ Ice, DJ Smurf, DJ Dotcom, and T-Cue,” Versatile told THE STAR.

Versatile also recently performed at Reggae Sumfest after he was called on by fellow artiste Popcaan. Delivering Nah Be Ungrateful and Friend To The End, Versatile stated that the feedback has been extremely positive.

“It did mad. Nuff people say dem love the vibe whe mi add to the performance. Look out fi mi next year enuh, fully booked fi it,” he said.

He also confirmed to THE STAR that he will be shooting a portion of the video for his latest single Party Ya Nice at his birthday bash. Admission for Beach Cawvingz is $1,000, while ladies will be treated to a 2-4-1 deal before 8 p.m. Gates open at 3 p.m.

It is a one-of-a-kind event for adults only that has had tongues wagging since its inception two years ago. Last year, the turnout was bigger than the previous, and this year, promoter Lloyd Cameron expects an even bigger turnout for Shades Pon de Beach 2014.

“It’s going to be bigger and better,” Cameron said. “We have some activities during the day. it’s going to be a lot more exciting and we have three very good top-line artistes booked.”

Shades Pon de Beach takes place on Sunday, July 27 at Sugar Pot Beach Club at Rio Nuevo Beach in St Mary, and features main acts Alkaline, Venomous and Gage.

The show begins at 11 a.m. and goes on until the early hours of the next morning. The main acts will appear in the night, but there will be a stage presentation earlier that will feature up-and-coming artistes.

The event will introduce a new act that seems to have a bright future, a singer by the name of Ramon Saviour.

The show is basically taking Shades Nightclub to the beach for wider audience participation.

The show will feature something that is only available to persons vacationing at some of our resorts on the north coast, that is, a nude beach. This will be separate from the main venue where a plethora of activities will take place, including amateur exotic dance contest, bikini beach soccer, half-naked Olympics, oil wrestling, wet t-shirt contest, body painting, naked sack race, fire dancing, and more.

The body of an unidentified male believed to be in its 60s was found on the beach in 12 Miles, Bull Bay area of St Andrew, yesterday.

The body is of brown complexion, slim build with black and grey hair. It was clad in a brown shirt, cream sweater, white T-shirt, red and white underpants, orange shorts, blue pants and a pair of blue and brown socks.

Reports from the Yallahs police are that about 10 a.m., fishermen in the area stumbled upon the body and alerted the police. The scene was processed and the body removed.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greece police are looking for a drug-smuggling gang that abandoned an 830-kilogramme (1,800-pound) stash of marijuana on a southern beach.A police statement says the drugs were found early Thursday near the port town of Kyllini, in the Peloponnese region about 250 kilometres (150 miles) southwest of Athens.The marijuana was packaged in 56 bundles. Police are investigating whether a vehicle found nearby had been used by the unknown smugglers.Police said the drugs did not appear to have been washed ashore, but it was unclear whether they had been brought in by sea or were supposed to have been picked up by boat and shipped elsewhere.The packages were found following a tip-off. SUPREME Ventures Limited, through its sports betting brand, JustBet, recently renewed its title sponsorship with the Jamaica Volleyball Association (JAVA) for the staging of the 2013 JUSTBET/TVJSN Beach Volleyball competition, to the tune of $2million.The JustBet/TVJSN Beach Volleyball competition will take the format of a series of three one-day tournaments open to all interested persons and was scheduled to start yesterday at Long Bay Beach in Negril. Participants will gain and accumulate points based on their final placement in each leg of the tournament. The tournament will continue this Saturday at Cornwall Beach, Montego Bay, and the following Saturday at the UDC Beach in Ocho Rios. All games begin at 9:00 am.Following the tournament, the top six teams will then advance to a play-off, which consists of first and second rounds, semi-final and final. The teams in the play-offs will be placed into two groups, of which, the first round will take the format of a one-day round robin on September 28, while in the second round, the top four teams will advance to a two-day round robin scheduled for October 5 and 6. The spikes are thought to be anti-tank devices, according to Shawn Corin the senior ranger on Northam Burrows.

The coiled spikes were erected at the location to stop invading tanks from advancing off the beach and inland, Mr Corin said.

Some of the recovered coiled spikes will be given to the North Devon Museum in Barnstaple.

Mr Corin said: “The spikes were first exposed back in 2007 but before we had a chance to remove any, the Pebble Ridge had swallowed them up again. This time we’ve managed to remove the majority of them – about two tonnes worth.

“The coils would have ripped off the tracks from any tanks, rendering them immobile.”

Northam Burrows Country Park is a 253 hectare grassy coastal plain at the mouth of the Taw and Torridge estuary, which includes the Pebble Ridge, a bank of cobbles which is part of Westward Ho! beach.

Gaye Tabor, Torridge District Council’s lead member for the natural and built environment, said: “It’s fascinating the secrets Northam Burrows is still withholding from us.

“It’s such a wonderful natural resource for Torridge, enjoyed by people of all ages, and never fails to amaze.”

THE National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Brazil has gone above and beyond the call of duty in its efforts to assist Jamaica’s U-19 beach volleyball teams to prepare for competition at the FIVB World U-19 Beach Volleyball Championship in Portugal from July 11-14 .In its latest move, NOC Brazil has decided to cover all expenses to have Jacqueline Cruz Silva accompany the team to Portugal.The decision comes after NOC Brazil, in collaboration with the Jamaica Olympic Association (JOA) and the Jamaica Volleyball Association (JaVA), arranged to send the world-renowned winner of the first women Olympic beach volleyball championship to Jamaica to provide technical assistance to the teams from May 29 to June 6. This was followed by assistance to cover the accommodation, meals and ground transportation expenses of the teams’ visit to Brazil from June 29-July 6 for preparatory training.Commenting on the new development, president of JaVA Major Warrenton Dixon, said: “I could not have planned a better script. The kindness that we have received from Brazil, to include their NOC, National Volleyball Federation and Embassy in Jamaica, knows no bounds.”Rojey Hutchinson and Shavar Bryan make up the boys’ team, while Tionna Graham and Lisanne Roofe comprise the girls’ team. They will carry Jamaica’s flag, which will be making its first appearance at a beach volleyball event at this level.They are due to depart Jamaica today and return next week Tuesday.
