Strong signals detected in AirAsia black box hunt

PANGKALAN BUN, Indonesia (AFP) – Indonesian authorities said Sunday strong signals were emanating from the crucial black box recorders of an AirAsia plane that crashed into the sea two weeks ago, killing all 162 people on board.

Military divers were trying to follow the pings to the boxes, believed to be on the floor of the Java Sea about 30 metres (100 feet) underwater, S.B Supriyadi, a director with the National Search and Rescue Agency told AFP.

The hunt came after the mangled tail of the Airbus jet was lifted from the sea on Saturday.

“The ping was detected about one kilometre (0.6 miles) east of the tail,” Supriyadi told AFP at the search headquarters of Panglakun Bun.

The Indonesian meteorological agency has said stormy weather likely caused the Airbus A320-200 to crash.

But a definitive answer is impossible without the black boxes, which should contain the pilots’ final words as well as various flight data.

Supriyadi and other officials involved in the search said they were confident the pings were from the black boxes, describing the signals as strong.

Supriyadi said an object believed to be the main body of the plane had also been detected close to the area from where the pings were emanating.

“We are now trying to check by sending our divers,” he added.

The search efforts, which have involved US, Chinese and other foreign naval ships, has recovered just 48 bodies.

Supriyadi said many of the bodies were believed to be trapped in the cabin, so reaching that part of the wreckage was also a top priority.

All but seven of those on board were Indonesian.

The non-Indonesians were three South Koreans, one Singaporean, one Malaysian, one Briton and a Frenchman — co-pilot Remi Plesel.

A clear statement of intent was made yesterday, the first raceday for 2015, by trainer Anthony Nunes to 14-time champion Wayne DaCosta. The statement ,which came after Nunes saddled three winners following the first five races of the 10 on offer, was that Nunes really means business this year. His winners were Royal Assault, the first horse to win a race in 2015, Lord Storm and Locked and Loaded.

“A really good to start the season. I am very happy for the three winners, but it is the start; there is still a very, very long way to go,” Nunes told the Complete Racing Guide.

A rejuvenated Royal Vibes under a never-say-die ride by Shamaree Muir took the feature event, the Caymanas Track Limited (CTL) Fan Appreciation Day Trophy. Royal Vibes (Royal Minister – November Lace), who was sent off as the joint 3-2 second favourite, broke well but was surprisingly held off the pace set by Hologram Shadow (Andre Martin) and stable-companion All Correct (Shane Ellis) for most of the way.

Turning for home in third position, Royal Vibes responded well to the urgings of Muir as the five-year-old bay gelding got up in the nick of time to nip All Correct on the wire, winning by a head in the Overnight Allowance event for three-year-olds and upwards going over 1,820 metres.

Twenty-one-to-one long shot Sir Frederick (Kuri Powell aboard) came in third position. The winning time was 1:56:1 minutes.

“This is an overwhelming victory for me today (yesterday) as I outdid one of best jockeys at the Park in Shane Ellis. I knew that I was going to win the race from the half, but it turned out to be a hard-fought victory. But I am happy with it as a win is win,” Muir told the Jamaica Observer.

Backed by the very experienced Live Wyah Band out of Jamaica, Jah Vinci showed growth and maturity during his set, occasionally taking time out to interact with patrons as he took them on a musical journey.

Following the concert, Jah Vinci said he was very pleased with his performance and thanked the patrons for their continuous support throughout the years.

“As you may be aware, I have faced some challenging times in recent years, but it’s moments like these that keeps me going. The fans came out and showed a lot of support for my music and, that, within itself, is enough to keep me motivated and continue doing good music,” he told the French media during an interview.
