Wesley Brown on cloud nine after golf rankings debut

JAMAICA’S rising golfing star Wesley Brown has officially made it on the international golf rankings. He has been listed at number 1,548 in the latest release, which is topped by world number one Rory McIlroy.

An elated Brown, who has been on a roll recently winning his last two tournaments in Jamaica, said making the international rankings was a dream come true.

“I am elated and so happy. I have worked very hard and made a lot of sacrifices and now all this is paying off, ” Brown said.

He was full of praise for his sponsor Sandals Resorts International for its support which has allowed him to participate in the international tour.

Brown, who is currently on a break until January, said his plan is to steadily move up the rankings and is confident that next year will be an even more successful one.

The Jamaican ace recently won the Alliance Buccaneer Memorial Event at Caymanas Golf Club as well as a charity event in Montego Bay.

With his golfing season now closed for the year, Brown said he will be back in action in Jamaica in January, but will open his overseas tour in February. “I am expecting even better things on the Carolina Series this year,” Brown noted.

He will next year be playing on the high-level USA Pro Series circuit following sterling play abroad. He had previously competed on the National Golfing Association (NGA) Carolina Series, which is a notch below the Pro Series, but due to his outstanding performances, had earned a shot at the higher rated Pro Series.

The NGA Tour consists of several tours: Pro Series, Carolina Series and Winter Series.

Brown is a caddy at Sandals Golf and Country Club in St Ann.

Debut was joy and butterflies, says Test new boy Peters

PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa (CMC) — Left-arm seamer Kenroy Peters yesterday described his Test debut as one of “joy and butterflies”, and dedicated his first Test wicket to seven-week-old son Ethan.

The 32-year-old, who arrived here earlier this week as a late replacement for the injured Kemar Roach, shared the new ball with Jerome Taylor on the opening morning of the Boxing Day second Test at St George’s Park.

Peters said he found out he had been included in the final XI on Christmas Day, but noted this did little to assuage the nerves.

“The nerves start from the time you hear you are in the first XI. It was a mixture of emotions, joy and butterflies,” said Peters.

“I always tell myself once I bowl my first spell and I can be within the areas I want to bowl, the second spell is going to be easier because I would have already assessed the conditions and that’s basically what my first spell was all about.

“I was trying to assess the conditions, looking at the strengths of the batsmen and working towards the team plan. The more I bowled during the day I became more confident.”

He finished with one for 44 from 15 overs, claiming century-maker Dean Elgar for 121, caught at the wicket off one that seamed away gently in the final session.

Peters said his main focus from the start of the day had been getting among the wickets.

“I remember when I played my first first-class game, it was against South Africa A. I was just finished playing Under-19 when I got the call,” Peters reminisced.

“Now 10 to 12 years later, I am making my [Test] debut against South Africa. So when I was bowling [today] my only ambition was to get a wicket … because I wanted to do it for my son. I have a seven-week-old son and I’m dedicating this to my son.”

South Africa finished the day in a strong position on 270 for two, with Faf du Plessis unbeaten on 99 and captain Hashim Amla, who got a double hundred in the first Test at Centurion last week, unbeaten on 17.

Both batsmen benefited from missed chances as West Indies put down three catches.

With AB de Villiers and Stiaan van Zyl, both of whom got hundreds in the first Test, still to come, South Africa appear headed for another large total, but Peters said it was important that West Indies remained patient and take their chances.

“The South African batsmen are excellent batsmen, but they tend to sit on their back foot a lot because they have grown up on pitches that are pretty bouncy and which come through. My strength was to try and bowl a little fuller, just be patient and see if I can try and get success from just being patient,” the Vincentian explained.

“When I was home I spoke to Nixon McLean and Ian Allen (former West Indies fast bowlers). When I came on tour I was speaking to Sir Curtly (Ambrose) and also the bowlers who played in the first game to assess the pitch, [to] see what the conditions are like and they kind of helped me to plan my game and this in turn helped me to bowl reasonably well today.”

He added: “Tomorrow we definitely have to take more of our chances. We also have to bowl a more consistent line and also assess the batsmen a lot more. Hopefully this can help us.”

Kalado set to thrill fans at his Reggae Sumfest debut

Kalado – File

An appearance on internationally acclaimed music festival, Reggae Sumfest, is every artiste’s dream, and for a dancehall act, his sights are firmly fixed on Dancehall Night to show off his skills.

Come July 17, Pree Money singer, Kalado, will have his moment with the stars as he makes his official debut at the festival’s home in Catherine Hall, Montego Bay.

“Last year, Bounty Killer started the process when he called me on during his set and I did a little thing. Honestly, it lasted less than a minute, but it was a thrilling experience. The crowd response was very encouraging and it has definitely whet my appetite,” the Alliance Next Generation (ANG) artiste, who is managed by Nancy Davis, said.

soaring

One year later, Kalado’s profile is soaring and he has amassed a string of songs which have secured his rite of passage straight onto the Sumfest official line-up. Songs such as Personally, Good Good – which is heading towards anthemic status – Body Nuh Dead, Make Me Feel and Take a Ride are all part of the entertainer’s steadily increasing repertoire which is currently blazing the dancehall.

The overseas market is also feeling the full force of Kalado, as demonstrated by his visit to Toronto in May, when he headlined his own show at the capacity-filled Blue Diamond Club venue, in front of a very enthusiastic audience. A very ecstatic Kalado noted that he was impressed by the welcome he received in that Canadian city and admits that as a result of the love shown to him by the fans, he exited the stage “almost walking on air”.

Stevens hits brace on debut in Thailand

Sport

Howard WalkerMonday, August 05, 2013

Reggae Boy Errol Stevens grabbed a brace on his Thailand debut for Gulf Saraburi FC in their 2-0 win over Rayong FC on Saturday.Stevens, 27, who signed a few weeks ago, thanked God after scoring twice because only a few months ago he had doubts as to whether he would continue playing after a knee surgery.“I did a knee surgery and the doc told me six to nine months. I thought I could have maybe taken a long vacation. But after three months I told my friends, I’d just stand on the field and I can’t move, so you have to pass the ball straight to me and I can only use my left leg,” said Stevens while at Arnett Gardens. That didn’t work out too well with his teammates who constantly told him to rest, but his determination in getting back on the field was very strong and he started working out in the gym and on the beach on his own.“I wondered how it was taking so long. I started driving to the beach to swim and run, but then I wanted more work, I went and bought a bicycle just to work my legs because I figured driving was too easy,” he pointed out.He continued: “The whole rehab was full of pain and sad feelings. Many evenings I’d go to train at Arnett and my teammates would say your foot not ready go rest. But I guess I couldn’t believe that rest would work. I pushed myself all the way and at the end of February I played my first game though not 100 per cent fit. I just needed that feeling of playing again.”Stevens, who made his senior debut against Colombia in 2011, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, had previously played in Russia for FC Khimki in 2009, and more recently donned the colours of Hanio FC in the Vietnam league in 2012.“All this doesn’t even explain half the faith I have in God, not in myself, because if it was up to me alone I’d have quit a long time ago. God is working all the time, even when things aren’t going your way,” said Stevens.

Rupert Grint to make West End debut

26 July 2013 Last updated at 11:11 ET Rupert Grint, Ben Whishaw Rupert Grint and Ben Whishaw took part in a read-through of the play for director Ian Rickson Rupert Grint is to make his West End stage debut alongside Ben Whishaw in a West End revival of Jez Butterworth’s Mojo.

Daniel Mays and Downton Abbey’s Brendan Coyle will also star in the black comedy set in a seedy 1950s Soho night club.

The award-winning play opened at the Royal Court in 1995 and was made into a film released in 1998.

Mojo will begin previews at the Harold Pinter Theatre on 26 October.

The show will be directed by Ian Rickson – who directed the original production – and designed by Ultz, who worked with Rickson and Butterworth on Jerusalem.

Speaking to Baz Bamigboye in the Daily Mail, Rickson said he cast Grint after placing him in a read-through of the play.

‘I’d seen the Potter films with my daughter and always thought Rupert was truthful as Ron Weasley. There’s something ordinary and centred about him, and in this world of Mojo you want that grittiness,’ he said.

Whishaw, who plays Q in the latest Bond films, was last seen onstage opposite Judi Dench in Peter and Alice at the Noel Coward theatre.
