Aidonia gets ratings for Sumfest performance

Following a fiery performance from Aidonia at Sumfest, the dancehall boss has been receiving great reviews from local and international media and fans on his social media pages around the world.

Robbo Ranks from UK’s BBC Radio and DJ Norie from New York City radio station Power 105, who were at Sumfest, both shared the view that Aidonia delivered an excep- tional performance, one they had never seen before. They spoke about his growth in the business and said that he had the fans in his corner right there with him.

Many people were surprised to see Aidonia jumping off the stage and jumping fences to get to his fans and to perform for them in the general section. For this gesture, Aidonia has been compared to Akon and T-Pain, who both did the same thing at Sumfest some years ago.

“I just went out on the stage and gave my fans my all, enuh, but while on stage, I couldn’t really feel my general fans, and I saw they were enjoying the performance, so I decided to go and connect with them more, and trust me, it was a great feeling being out there. All now, I don’t know how me one jump the fence, but a just the works of Jah, yes I,” the deejay said.

Aidonia left the island on Thursday to perform in the Bahamas this weekend. He plans to give them a taste of his fiery Sumfest performance.

The deejay returns on Sunday to shoot a video and promote his new song, CoCo Powder, produced by Ancient Records. The single has already been garnering lots of views on YouTube and his social media pages.

Fans can follow Aidonia on Facebook: Sheldon Ricardo Aitana Lawrence, Twitter @aidoniajop and Instagram:@1voiceaidoniajop.

QQ pulls out of Sumfest - Negotiations breaks down between artiste, promoters

Andr? Williams, STAR Writer

QQ

Citing miscommunication with members of his management team, dancehall artiste QQ will not be performing at this year’s staging of Reggae Sumfest.

QQ, whose real name is Kareem Dawkins, said in a media release that negotiations were not finalised and an overseas opportunity presented itself, hence the reason for his absence from the Sumfest line-up this year.

However, Summerfest Productions boss, Johnny Gourzong, while speaking to THE STAR yesterday, confirmed that the artiste was withdrawn from the line-up and sought to shed some light on the issue.

He said, “We would not go to his management team, we went to his booking agent and have in our possession a signed and duly executed contract with QQ. We were told recently that the fee was agreed and signed on. QQ was not pleased … we paid a deposit and our budget could not allow us to go anymore, and he said that he is not going to work for that amount, and we weren’t offering anymore than that so we had to take him off.”

When asked if his absence will affect the show, Gourzong said, “I think he is a good artiste, but I don’t think it’s gonna affect the show … We have gone and filled the gap.”

The deejay recently released the video for the increasingly popular track Tweety Bird (Turn Me On). The video was shot in Miami and directed by Strugu Films (which is based in Atlanta). The song was produced by Tarik ‘Rvssian’ Johnston for Head Concussion Records.

sexy video

“The video is quite sexy and it shows a more mature and adult side to me. Since it has been released, the feedback has been very good and I love the feedback. And the fans seem to be loving the more mature QQ,” the deejay noted.

QQ recently performed in Edmonton, Calgary and Belmont in Canada, where fans showed their appreciation for songs from his catalogue including One Drop, Stookie, Mosquito Net and Jack Hammer, which is featured on VP Records’ Reggae Gold 2014 series.

“The shows were amazing and we had a great turnout and the ladies were amazing. Mr Vegas was also on the shows and it was amazing working alongside an artiste of Mr Vegas’ calibre, one who has dominated the music scene over the years, and always had a good command with the industry,” said QQ.

Fans can follow QQ on social media on Instagram/twitter @qqworld and facebook.com/qquniverse.

Kalado set to thrill fans at his Reggae Sumfest debut

Kalado – File

An appearance on internationally acclaimed music festival, Reggae Sumfest, is every artiste’s dream, and for a dancehall act, his sights are firmly fixed on Dancehall Night to show off his skills.

Come July 17, Pree Money singer, Kalado, will have his moment with the stars as he makes his official debut at the festival’s home in Catherine Hall, Montego Bay.

“Last year, Bounty Killer started the process when he called me on during his set and I did a little thing. Honestly, it lasted less than a minute, but it was a thrilling experience. The crowd response was very encouraging and it has definitely whet my appetite,” the Alliance Next Generation (ANG) artiste, who is managed by Nancy Davis, said.

soaring

One year later, Kalado’s profile is soaring and he has amassed a string of songs which have secured his rite of passage straight onto the Sumfest official line-up. Songs such as Personally, Good Good – which is heading towards anthemic status – Body Nuh Dead, Make Me Feel and Take a Ride are all part of the entertainer’s steadily increasing repertoire which is currently blazing the dancehall.

The overseas market is also feeling the full force of Kalado, as demonstrated by his visit to Toronto in May, when he headlined his own show at the capacity-filled Blue Diamond Club venue, in front of a very enthusiastic audience. A very ecstatic Kalado noted that he was impressed by the welcome he received in that Canadian city and admits that as a result of the love shown to him by the fans, he exited the stage “almost walking on air”.

Single mother ekes out living at Sumfest

BY CECELIA CAMPBELL-LIVINGSTON Observer staff reporter livingstonc@jamaicaobserver.com

MONTEGO BAY, St James — For most people, Reggae Sumfest in Catherine Hall is a place to enjoy the best of local and international music. For mother of two Hermine Shaw, however, the event is an opportunity to supplement her income so she can better provide for her children. She has been a staple at the annual three-day festival since its inception in 1993, selling meals from a cook shop. It might not sound like much, but over the years, Shaw has turned over her profits and has managed to expand her business portfolio.“I invested my money in putting a taxi on the road. That way there would always be something coming in,” she said. She has since bought another taxi and her children have now “passed the worst”, but she has no intention of giving up her yearly three-day appointment at Catherine Hall.Speaking to the Jamaica Observer from her stall at the venue last weekend, she said Sumfest has been a blessing.“Every year I pray for them. I pray that they will return to stage the next festival,” she said.“Now that my children are past the worst, they constantly ask me if I would consider giving it up. They say that I work too hard,” said Shaw. But quitting is not an option, not just because of the earning potential, but also because she genuinely enjoys working. With a smile she says her children have now adopted an “if you can’t beat her, join her” attitude as they often assist her in the cook shop.Shaw’s daughter, Nadia Waite, is now a qualified teacher, having attended Montego Bay Teachers’ College. Her 21-year-old son Shamari Sterling, who intends to pursue a career in business, has received an acceptance letter from the University of the West Indies, Western campus. He was with his mother during the most recent staging of Sumfest and spoke with the Observer in-between attending to customers.“I feel proud of her,” he said of his mother. “She likes to help us. She earns her income to send us to school and that’s the main reason I come to help and give her my support.”Hailing from Kingston, Shaw moved to Montego Bay in 1970 where she operated a similar food stall at Reggae Sunsplash. She did it for 18 years, then joined the Sumfest team after its forerunner folded.Things along the way haven’t always been smooth, but Shaw gives thanks every day that she took the decision to invest in the stall when she did. She also praised the music festival’s organisers, who she said were accommodating.“It wasn’t always easy ’cause sometimes it was really rough, but I persisted,” she said of the “ups and downs” of competing with other vendors.A view of Shaw’s cookshop at Reggae Sumfest.Hermine Shaw takes a breather from selling.Hermine Shaw with her son Shamari (left) and grandson.

Sumfest, a success

RUSSELL praised most of the top acts on the July 21-27 show for quality performances, pointing out that the arrest of three persons for smoking on Dancehall Night was “one little damper on the spirits”. He added: “It kinda killed the vibe a little.”According to Russell, many patrons complained that the event was held outdoors which allowed them to ‘light up’ without being penalised under the Government’s no-smoking-ban which has been in effect since July 15.Russell says it is too early to comment on how well the show did financially.“We still don’t know as we haven’t completed the ticket tabulations and accounts. I believe that we will be showing a profit.”Production-wise, Russell was also pleased.“We improve a little each year, this year the light and sounds were phenomenal,” he said. “Dancehall Night saw few band changes as one band backed most of the artistes. All in all it, was tremendous.”Reggae Sumfest’s 21st edition saw top-notch performances from American R&B singer Miguel, American hip hop artiste Flo’ Rida, as well as singers Jah Cure, Chronixx, Beres Hammond and Grammy-winning singjay Damian ‘Junior Gong’ Marley.American R&B singer Miguel performing at Reggae Sumfest held at the Catherine Hall Entertainment Complex in St James recently.
