Bus operators decide next move in latest battle with JUTC

Transport operators will today determine their response to what they claim is the Jamaica Urban Transit Company’s (JUTC) decision to remove coaster bus operators from its sub-franchise system come March 2015.

President of the Jamaica Association of Transport Operators and Owners (JATOO), Edgerton Newman, says operators were told of the JUTC’s decision at a meeting with the company last Thursday.

But he says the transport operators’ response to the JUTC’s move will be dependent on the Supreme Court’s ruling in a case filed by operators against the Government. The judgement is to be handed down today at 2 p.m.

Filed suits

The Rural Transit Company Limited had filed suits against the Transport Authority, the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC), the Office of Utilities Regulations, the Commissioner of Police and the Attorney General.

The operators claimed, among other things, that the Transport Authority acted illegally when it barred rural operators from picking up passengers in the Kingston Metropolitan Transport Region (KMTR). They are also challenging the decision of the JUTC to commandeer a section of the Mandela Highway for exclusive use by its buses.

In addition, they are contesting JUTC’s decision to discontinue the sub-franchise licences of some operators in reclaiming routes in the KMTR.

Newman says operators will be holding a meeting at the Caenwood Centre in Kingston today to discuss the JUTC’s decision that was announced on Thursday. He says JATOO will earnestly fight the decision, which will affect some 10 per cent of its membership.

According to Newman, operators who were granted sub-franchise licences were told that they would receive contracts for up to four years.

He says JATOO will be seeking the intervention of the Minister of Transport and Works Dr Omar Davies and Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller.

LL Cool J hails Nikki Z"s promotion of his latest single

File – Nikki Z

CURTIS CAMPBELL, STAR Writer

Popular media personality Nikki Z recently received commendation from legendary American rapper, LL Cool J, for her role in the promotion of his current single, ‘Hustler’, which features Mavado.

Hustler has more than four million views on American hip hip website World Star Hip Hop. The Grammy award-winning rapper first took to social media to express his appreciation to Nikki Z before making it official by personally calling her cellphone.

Nikki Z, who premiered the song on her popular weekly radio countdown programme ‘Nikki Z HOT 20′, had this to say: “As soon as the producer Jerry Wonda sent it to my inbox, I loved it, so I uploaded the song with the Nikki Z’s Radio drop to prevent illegal download. It was late but I happened to be awake those hours. The post went viral while I was sleeping.”

“Jerry put me on a conference call with LL Cool J and he thanked me for starting the movement with this track. It’s still surreal to have someone you grew up watching through TV, magazines, someone so established, take time out to recognise my work.”

Following Nikka Z’s promotion of the song, the rapper also decided to feature Nikki Z’s radio drops in the official music video for Hustler. She said the rapper decided to use her radio drop because she was the first to show support for the song.

“I was told by Mavado’s manager that LL felt it was right because I was the first person to play the track.”

Nikki Z is gearing up to host upcoming events such as DNZ All Star, which features DJ Keemy, and the highly anticipated ‘Welcome to Jamrock Reggae’ cruise.

Bramma – Contributed

Dancehall artiste Bramma ‘Di Gorilla’, this week released a new single that has fans perplexed as to the inspiration behind the composition.

The track, Birds of a Feather, showcases Bramma’s talent beyond toasting fiery lyrics on a hot beat. On this latest offering, he goes acoustic, allowing fans to experience the dichotomy of his musical artistry interlaced with great storytelling, backed by the sounds of a melodic steel-string guitar.

The single is produced by S-Lock Entertainment and alludes to a true story involving a treacherous act committed by a close friend once held in high esteem.

In a statement to the media, Bramma explains that he wanted to offer something different to his fans other than the clich?d hardcore lyrics on a computerised bass-laden dancehall beat.

“As an artiste, you have to explore new avenues and sounds if you intend to grow musically. I want to do something different. I can’t be singing the same type of music everyday. Hence, to broaden my horizon, I decided to rehash the art of storytelling on this project, backed by an acoustic guitar, showcasing a more contemporary side to me, allowing people to listen and hear the message in the music,” he said.

Now available on iTunes, Bramma added that plans are also afoot to shoot a video in the coming weeks.

The S-Lock recording artiste recently scored his second career No.1 with Have Dis, an audacious street-anthem featuring label-mates and newcomers Idus, Diamond, RP, X-File and Krucial. His previous chart topper came courtesy of Stephen ‘Di Genius’ McGregor-produced Cha Cha Bwoy.
