Nicki Minaj to headline at Wireless Festival

Nicki Minaj, Avicii and Drake are to headline Wireless Festival this year.

The Anaconda rapper is to take top billing at the annual British music event this summer and will be joined by the other two pop superstars at the three-day music event.

It will be Nicki’s first return to the festival since her appearance on the bill in 2012, while Drake had to pull out of headlining Wireless last year due to illness.

An insider exclusively told BANG Showbiz: “Nicki is going to be the main attraction this year. It’s a real coup, as at the moment, it is her only UK festival appearance. The organisers are hoping she does something really sexy onstage for her British fans. It’s great that Drake is coming back after pulling out last minute in 2014 – while Avicii will bring the dance vibe, and hopefully, drop some of the tracks he has recorded with Madonna.”

Wireless Festival will return to Finsbury Park in London for the second year running, but unlike 2014, it will not be jointly held at Perry Park in Birmingham, following underwhelming ticket sales and disappointing revenues.

The insider added: “Wireless is going back to being just a London festival. The organisers tried to replicate the success of the Reading and Leeds Festivals, but the Birmingham site proved to be a flop, despite having the same acts as the capital city.”

Wireless Festival – which was headlined by Kanye West and Bruno Mars last year – will be held between Friday July 3 and Sunday July 5, and other acts are set to be confirmed in the coming months.

Richie Stephens delivers at One Caribbean Music Festival

Contributed – Richie Stephens performing at the One Caribbean Festival in Florida recently.

The One Caribbean Music Festival which took place recently at the Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, Florida, hit a sizzling energy level when Jamaican music ambassador Richie Stephens delivered a blistering performance.

Stephens took fans on a musical stroll down memory lane, crooning hits Tougher Than Before, Trying To Get To You, Fight Back and True Believer.

He upped the ante with real reggae music before segued into Winner and Spanish Harlem, which earned thunderous applause. To show his musical dexterity, the Love Your Life singer delved into the inspirational A Change Is Gonna Come that was dedicated to ‘fallen soldiers’ Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin and others in the USA, who have died at the hands of cops.

The emotionally charged song was perfectly executed and had the entire park singing along. The lively gospel medley that followed, warmed hearts and set the stage for the hot new Ska Teck single Everybody Dance that raised the bar ten-fold.

Ska Tech is definitely not just hot in Jamaica but it is now an international phenomenon. I was total blown away by how well it was embraced by fans here today,” Stephens declared, moments after he left the stage.

The singer confessed that prior to arriving in Florida, he had no plan to perform the song with dancers.

“To be honest, I had no plan to perform Everybody Dance with dancers. When I realised just how popular the song is in Florida, I had to scramble to find a competent group in less than 24 hours, and what a spectacular job the ‘Lime Light Squad’ did here today,” he remarked.

Stephens’ next big performance will be at the 19th annual Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival set for January 29-31, 2015, at the Trelawny Multi-purpose Stadium in Falmouth.

"TOO DRUNK" Dozens injured in college riot at NH fall festival

Police in southwestern New Hampshire used tear gas to disperse crowds of college students who turned the town of Keene’s annual Pumpkin Festival into a riot Saturday.

The Union Leader reported that more than 30 people were injured and 20 hospitalized Saturday afternoon when hundreds of Keene State College students and their friends gathered on a street just off the college’s campus while the popular festival was taking place on Main Street. Town fire chief Mark Howard told the paper that police and firefighters were called to the scene at around 3 p.m. local time.

Howard reported that the injuries suffered included cuts from broken class or people being hit by bottles and cans.

College officials provided few specifics on the melee but said Keene State students and out-of-town visitors were involved. The school said in a statement that off-campus gatherings had at locations around the city Friday, but had briefly calmed down before ramping up again Saturday afternoon.

Keene State student Ellery Murray told The Boston Globe she was at a party that had drawn a large crowd when people started throwing things. She said police responded in riot gear and used tear gas to break up the crowd.

“People were just throwing everything they could find — rocks, skateboards, buckets, pumpkins,” she said. “People just got too drunk.”

New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan said state and local safety officials worked to defuse what she called “the situation.”

WMUR-TV reported that trouble flared up again at around 9:30 p.m. local time, when rioters threw objects at police and set fires as officers tried to push them back. The station reported that police officers from Keene and several surrounding towns responded to the mayhem along with New Hampshire state police. WMUR reported that arrests were made, but a precise number was not immediately made available.

The Union Leader reported that cars and Dumpsters were overturned and fires were hit before police released tear gas at around 10 p.m.

College President Anne Huot said in an emailed statement that the festival has been promoted by others “as a destination for destructive and raucous behavior” and the college had tried on the front end, in working with the city and campus, to prevent this from happening.

“We deplore the actions of those whose only purpose was to cause mayhem,” she said, adding that the students involved will be held accountable.

The Pumpkin Festival has been held annually in Keene since 1991 and attracts people of all ages from all over the state and New England region. Last year, the festival set a world record for hosting the most carved and lit jack-o-lanterns with 30,581. However, the festival has also attracted college students from across the region for a weekend of drinking and partying.

Recent Keene State graduate Julie Conlon told the Globe, “Pumpkinfest has always been fun. Yeah, kids drink excessively, but it’s never been out of control. This year I watched thousands of kids pile into a backyard and kind of go crazy.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Seafood Festival to receive great performance from Mr Khool

Mr Khool – Contributed

The name Mr Khool is not yet a household one in Jamaican music. However, the burgeoning dancehall star, who hails from Mandeville, is reputed to be one of the most exciting stage performers among the current crop of new acts.

To date, he has delivered impressive performances on a number of events, including Sting, Full Black, the Jamaica International Kite Festival, and more recently, Kern Spencer’s birthday bash, where he earned four encores.

“I’m a natural-born stage performer. Every time I perform on a show, I always get a good response. In the early days I didn’t have any songs playing on the radio and I was still able to mash up the shows. Now that I have music out that the fans know, it makes it easier to connect with them,” he said.

The soft-spoken deejay will be in action at the Little Ochie Seafood Festival this Sunday at Little Ochie in Alligator Pond, St Elizabeth.

Mr Khool is looking forward to this. “I am ready to perform for my fans in St Elizabeth. I can’t wait to touch the stage in Little Ochie. It’s going to be total niceness. The fans know what to expect from me. Every time I perform at this event, I always deliver a good show,” said Mr Khool, who is currently promoting a new track called Nuh Inna Dat on the Insight Records imprint.

One Love reggae festival to feature Freddie McGregor and other top acts

Faith Evans – File

The famous Niagara Falls tourist spot on the Canada-United States border is bracing for the inaugural staging of the concert, One Love at the Border.

The reggae-soul-funk festival will feature a diverse mix of acts such as Freddie McGregor, Errol Dunkley, Lakeside and Con Funk Shun.

The three-day show kicks off July 4 and will be headlined by singer Faith Evans, who emerged during the neo-soul movement of the 1990s.

The show is the brainchild of Jamaican Andrew Stephens, a senior partner in the Real Music Group, promoter of One Love at the Border. The Niagara Falls attraction will be transformed into a mighty moving stream of red, green and gold, using strategically placed lights to give a decidedly Rastafarian feel to the event.

“The idea for this is to not only celebrate past and present multi-genre music legends and create a stage for uprising local artistes, but to bring everyone together from different backgrounds, cultures and communities from both sides of the border,” he said.

Stephens has promoted numerous shows in Canada and the United Kingdom through his Unison Entertainment Enterprise. Last year, he joined with Thomas Tripodi and Tony D’Ambrogio to form RMG.

One Love at the Border is the company’s first major promotion. Stephens said they have received support from the Niagara Parks service, which runs Niagara Falls, but RMG is footing most of the bill for the debut event.

Mykal Rose delivers at Sierra Nevada reggae festival

International reggae star Mykal Rose delivered an incredible set during the recently concluded Sierra Nevada reggae festival held in Boonville, California between June 21 and 23.

“I had a really great time with Sly and Robbie. The fan response was amazing, we rocked the venue, we had a good time, the fans had a good time. Reggae music still has the ability to bring people of all creeds, colours and religions together,” he said.

Mykal Rose is in the middle of his ‘Showdown in a Bloody Town’ tour of the USA.

Earlier this week, the former lead singer of Black Uhuru teamed up with Inner Circle, aka the ‘Bad Boys of Reggae’ and with a young artiste called Bizerk to create a brand new World Cup anthem called All About The Ball. Rose has also teamed up with Canadian rapper Snow of Informer fame to do a song called Shame, which will be released soon.

“It was great being in the studio with Snow, and people are going to love the song when it is released in July. It was produced by Kent Jones and Kool and Drake in a studio called Record Room Studio, in Florida. It was an amazing experience,” he said.

Later this week, he will jet off to the ‘hippie festival’ in Oregon in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. He will be headliner on the annual ‘Reggae On the River’ show in California before ending his tour on July 4th with a festival in South Carolina.

Beyonce closes 1st day of Jay-Z"s Philly festival

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Beyonce closed the first day of her husband Jay-Z’s second annual music festival with a 90-minute set that featured hits like ‘Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)’ and ‘Crazy In Love’.

Beyonce was the headline performer Saturday at the Budweiser Made in America festival in Philadelphia on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway that drew 50,000 fans. She was excited and energetic as she sang and danced to songs that satisfied the crowd.“Welcome to Made in America,” she screamed. “Show me how loud you can be.”Beyonce performed more than a dozen songs on the main stage — much like her Mrs Carter World Tour, which wrapped in Brooklyn last month. She was a vocal powerhouse on songs like ‘If I Were a Boy’ and ‘1+1’ — where she sang on the floor — and like the Energizer Bunny during the up-tempo numbers ‘Get Me Bodied’ and ‘End of Time’. She closed with ‘Halo’, kicking the song off with Whitney Houston’s ‘I Will Always Love You’.The Grammy-winning singer — not a usual at the festival circuits — didn’t perform any new material that could hint at a possible new album. Another surprise was Jay-Z: The rapper didn’t join Beyonce onstage, though the two have a number of collaborations. Beyonce’s sister, Solange, who is part of the festival line-up Sunday, performed at an after-party at the Theatre of Living Arts for a feverish crowd.“I’d rather perform for a crowd of 50 that appreciate the music,” she told the crowd of 200 people.Deadmau5, Phoenix, Emeli Sande, HAIM, A$AP Rocky and others performed across three stages during the 10-hour event. Imagine Dragons were crowd favourites when singing the alternative-flavoured hits ‘Radioactive’ and ‘It’s Time’, while 2 Chainz was one of the most popular, thanks to his many hits as a lead artist and guest star.Nine Inch Nails, Calvin Harris, Queens of the Stone Age, Kendrick Lamar, Miguel and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis will perform Sunday.“This has been a beautiful night,” Beyonce yelled after finishing her set. A fan replied: “You’re beautiful!”Like our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/jamaicaobserverFollow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/JamaicaObserver
