Storm Saulter is film-maker in residence at UWI, Mona

KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Department of Literatures in English at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona has announced the appointment of Storm Saulter as film-maker in residence, which will run from January to May of the 2014/15 academic year.

During his tenure, Saulter will be responsible for the delivery of the course, Creative Writing: Screen/Stage. He will also be available to interact with students and offer guidance to those who are interested in the world of film-making.

Saulter, a graduate of the Los Angeles Film School, released his debut feature, the award-winning film, Better Mus’ Come, in 2011. The film is a sensitive and haunting account of Jamaica in the 70s, told from the perspective of a young man caught up in the violence of intense inter-party rivalry. Saulter was the director, screenwriter and director of photography for the film.

More recently, Saulter was executive producer for the anthology film, Ring Di Alarm! This film is said to have pioneered a new collective approach to film-making that may well be a successful model for independent film production in small localities. Produced by the New Caribbean Cinema (Film Collective), of which Saulter is co-founder, Ring Di Alarm! was released in Jamaica, Europe, the USA, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Saulter has been lauded locally for his contribution to cinema in Jamaica. He was identified by the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica as one of “50 Under Fifty Business Leaders Shaping Jamaica’s Future”. He was also named by The Jamaica Observer as one of Jamaica’s most influential people.

Saulter’s commercial credits include directing the music videos Who Knows, performed by Protoje and featuring Chronixx; and Tarrus Riley’s Shaka Zulu Pickney. He has done commercial work for Puma, Digicel and Virgin Media.

The Department of Literatures in English Writer/Film-maker in Residence programme was inaugurated in 2013 when writer, Dr Kei Miller, who is also a graduate of the department, was appointed to the post. Author, historian and social scientist Dr Erna Brodber held the position in 2014.

More than 150 buildings damaged in freak storm

PARAMARIBO, Suriname, Tuesday July 8, 2014, CMC – More than 150 buildings, including a school and hospital, were damaged when strong winds and rains associated with a freak storm swept through many districts here on Sunday, disaster officials have said.

They said that the storm had uprooted trees and power lines, and destroyed crops as it made its way through the capital Paramaribo and other areas including Coronie, Commewijne and Nickerie.

The National Coordination Center for Disaster Management (NCCR) said it had sent relief workers to assist victims and assess the damage.

Disaster officials said that the Nickerie and Wageningen areas which are close to the border with Guyana were hit hard.

According to District Commissioner Wedperkash Joeloemsingh over 150 homes and other structures, including a school in Wageningen and the hospital in Nieuw-Nickerie were damaged.

At least four people were reported injured by flying zinc sheets from roofs.

“This is the fourth time in two years that Nickerie suffered an ordeal like this. Only this time the winds were stronger and it took longer to pass”, Joeloemsingh told a news conference.

Tropical Storm Arthur forms off Florida coast

The first tropical storm of  the 2014 Atlantic Hurricane Season formed on Tuesday and could affect North and South Carolina in the United States as a hurricane by Thursday.

Tropical Storm Arthur strengthened after it became a tropical depression late Monoday off  the coast of  Florida.

The system is moving with maximum sustained winds of  40 miles per hour, and tropical-storm-force winds extend 45 miles from its centre.

The National Hurricane Centre said the storm is located about 95 miles southeast of  Cape Canaveral.

A tropical storm watch has been issued for the coast of  east-central Florida from Fort Pierce north to Flagler Beach and the storm is expected to produce 1 to 3 inches of  rain in the watch area later on Tuesday.

Although it has been a minute since reggae singer, Colin Levy, has made music headlines, the seasoned entertainer has assured his fans that his passion for creating and delivering music remains unchanged.

In fact he will be working on major shows this summer featuring artistes such as R. Kelly, Freddie McGregor, The Whispers, Johnny Osbourne and Faith Evans.

Levy, who also uses the monikers Iley Dred and Chardavid, had taken a step away from performing, while concentrating on the production side of the business. But with 90 glorious days of summer upon us, this crooner is definitely ready to shine.

“My focus for the last two years or so has been the creative side of the music business, doing some stuff with my son, working on a project with Demolition Man and ironing out some important deals. However, I have also been doing a few shows here and there – mainly charity stuff – just to keep a presence,” the multiple award winning singer, song-writer, producer, promoter and artiste manager revealed.

He added that it was quite a bit of irony that just when he decided to redirect his focus, that was the precise time that offers for shows started coming in from places such as Africa, a country he has always wanted to visit. That aside, however, it is with renewed energy that Iley Dred anticipates his July calendar.

“July will be a very busy month for me and I am vocally and physically ready for this journey,” the soft-spoken lovers rock singer explained.

He is known for hits such as Lover’s Holiday, A Friend For Life, World Crisis and Mamma among others.

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Satellite imagery at 4:00 am Friday indicates that Tropical Storm Dorian has become less organised, the National Meteorological Centre reports.A slow weakening is expected during the next day or so, according to the Met Office.At 4:00 am the centre of Dorian was located near Latitude 17.1 degrees north and Longitude 41.5 degrees west or about 2,290 kilometres east of the northern Leeward Islands.Dorian is moving toward the west-northwest near 32 km/h. A turn toward the west and an increase in forward speed are expected during the next couple of days.Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 85 km/h, with higher gusts. Tropical Storm Chantal could affect eastern parishes tonight

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica could begin feeling effects of Tropical Storm Chantal as early as tonight as the system passes in the vicinity of the island either as a tropical wave or tropical cyclone, the Meteorological Service says. A tropical storm watch remains in effect for the island as a weakening Chantal moves quickly westward and could pass close to the island’s eastern coastline.The main threat at this time is for outbreaks of heavy showers and thunderstorms to develop over the island, starting with eastern parishes, during the course of tonight and into Thursday.  Some flash flooding is, therefore, possible over eastern parishes, the Met Service says.  Periods of strong, gusty winds are also possible in thunderstorms.  Marine operators should remain on alert due to unfavourable sea conditions through Thursday.

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Tropical Storm Chantal formed over the Atlantic early Monday and was moving rapidly towards the Lesser Antilles, the Meteorological Service reported.At 4:00 am Monday the centre of Tropical Storm Chantal was located near Latitude 10.4 degrees north and Longitude 49.5 degrees west or about 1130 kilometres east-southeast of Barbados.Tropical Storm Chantal is not a threat to Jamaica at this time, the Met Service said. Chantal is moving towards the west near 43 km/h. The west-northwestward motion at about the same speed is expected over the next couple of days. On the forecast track, the centre of Chantal should approach the Lesser Antilles late Monday night or early Tuesday and move into the eastern Caribbean Sea late on Tuesday.Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 65 km/h with higher gusts. CASTRIES, St Lucia (CMC) — The Government has ordered the closure of all schools by noon and throughout Tuesday as the country prepares for the passage of Tropical Storm Chantal.According to a government statement, the schools will remain closed until Wednesday morning, unless advised otherwise. Prime Minister Kenny Anthony is expected to chair a pre-strike meeting of the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) on Monday and preparations have begun to ensure that all hurricane shelters are available especially for persons living in flood prone areas.In Barbados, the Deputy Chief Fisheries Officer, Joyce Leslie has urged boat owners to take immediate action to secure their vessels as the storm approaches.Boat owners with larger fishing vessels in the water on the south and south west coast have been advised to seek safe shelter in the Bridgetown Fisheries Complex Harbour.In its latest release, the National Hurricane Centre said Chantal, the third tropical storm for the Hurricane Season was located near latitude 10.9 north, longitude 51.7 west and is moving towards the west northwest near 41 kilometres per hour.The centre of the storm should reach the Lesser Antilles early Tuesday and move into the eastern Caribbean later on Tuesday.
