Large tropical wave forms in the Atlantic

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Monday July 28, 2014 - A tropical wave located located near 10°N, 33°W at 8 am EDT Monday, about 500 miles southwest of the Cape Verde Islands, is producing disorganized cloudiness and thunderstorms.

The National Hurricane Center designated the disturbance, Invest 93L, early Monday morning and environmental conditions in the Atlantic are conducive to futher development. The system has a high chance of developing into a strong tropical storm either Friday or Saturday.

According to Dr Jeff Masters at WeatherUnderground, “infrared satellite images showed that the system’s heavy thunderstorm activity had increased significantly since Sunday.”

The National Hurricane Centre reports the location of Invest 93L at 10.0N 32.5W, and is curretly moving westward at 15 mph.

Tropical Storm Arthur forms off Florida coast

The first tropical storm of  the 2014 Atlantic Hurricane Season formed on Tuesday and could affect North and South Carolina in the United States as a hurricane by Thursday.

Tropical Storm Arthur strengthened after it became a tropical depression late Monoday off  the coast of  Florida.

The system is moving with maximum sustained winds of  40 miles per hour, and tropical-storm-force winds extend 45 miles from its centre.

The National Hurricane Centre said the storm is located about 95 miles southeast of  Cape Canaveral.

A tropical storm watch has been issued for the coast of  east-central Florida from Fort Pierce north to Flagler Beach and the storm is expected to produce 1 to 3 inches of  rain in the watch area later on Tuesday.

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Satellite imagery at 4:00 am Friday indicates that Tropical Storm Dorian has become less organised, the National Meteorological Centre reports.A slow weakening is expected during the next day or so, according to the Met Office.At 4:00 am the centre of Dorian was located near Latitude 17.1 degrees north and Longitude 41.5 degrees west or about 2,290 kilometres east of the northern Leeward Islands.Dorian is moving toward the west-northwest near 32 km/h. A turn toward the west and an increase in forward speed are expected during the next couple of days.Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 85 km/h, with higher gusts. Tropical Storm Chantal could affect eastern parishes tonight

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica could begin feeling effects of Tropical Storm Chantal as early as tonight as the system passes in the vicinity of the island either as a tropical wave or tropical cyclone, the Meteorological Service says. A tropical storm watch remains in effect for the island as a weakening Chantal moves quickly westward and could pass close to the island’s eastern coastline.The main threat at this time is for outbreaks of heavy showers and thunderstorms to develop over the island, starting with eastern parishes, during the course of tonight and into Thursday.  Some flash flooding is, therefore, possible over eastern parishes, the Met Service says.  Periods of strong, gusty winds are also possible in thunderstorms.  Marine operators should remain on alert due to unfavourable sea conditions through Thursday.

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Tropical Storm Chantal formed over the Atlantic early Monday and was moving rapidly towards the Lesser Antilles, the Meteorological Service reported.At 4:00 am Monday the centre of Tropical Storm Chantal was located near Latitude 10.4 degrees north and Longitude 49.5 degrees west or about 1130 kilometres east-southeast of Barbados.Tropical Storm Chantal is not a threat to Jamaica at this time, the Met Service said. Chantal is moving towards the west near 43 km/h. The west-northwestward motion at about the same speed is expected over the next couple of days. On the forecast track, the centre of Chantal should approach the Lesser Antilles late Monday night or early Tuesday and move into the eastern Caribbean Sea late on Tuesday.Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 65 km/h with higher gusts. CASTRIES, St Lucia (CMC) — The Government has ordered the closure of all schools by noon and throughout Tuesday as the country prepares for the passage of Tropical Storm Chantal.According to a government statement, the schools will remain closed until Wednesday morning, unless advised otherwise. Prime Minister Kenny Anthony is expected to chair a pre-strike meeting of the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) on Monday and preparations have begun to ensure that all hurricane shelters are available especially for persons living in flood prone areas.In Barbados, the Deputy Chief Fisheries Officer, Joyce Leslie has urged boat owners to take immediate action to secure their vessels as the storm approaches.Boat owners with larger fishing vessels in the water on the south and south west coast have been advised to seek safe shelter in the Bridgetown Fisheries Complex Harbour.In its latest release, the National Hurricane Centre said Chantal, the third tropical storm for the Hurricane Season was located near latitude 10.9 north, longitude 51.7 west and is moving towards the west northwest near 41 kilometres per hour.The centre of the storm should reach the Lesser Antilles early Tuesday and move into the eastern Caribbean later on Tuesday.
