The ultra-popular dancehall rhythm, High Life, featuring several dancehall heavyweights, was officially released on iTunes on Tuesday.

“The riddim itself is on the front page of reggae iTunes so that is a great look. The High Life riddim is getting some incredible play on radio across all stations,” producer Justus Arison of JA Productions said.

Arison is moving quickly towards radio promotion stateside. “I am just going into the North American part of the promotion with 99 Jams and Nikki Z on a station in Hartford, Connecticut, so we are turning things up to another level. Mavado has been posting videos of his lead single on Instagram and he has many hip hop fans in North America,” Arison added.

Four artistes have already shot videos for their individual singles, a development that will amp up promotion.

“Munga and I have released the video for our single, Ryno’s video for Side Chick will be released this weekend, Chi Ching shot his video for Up and Beenie Man did his Million Gal video last week so the promotion is about to hit another level,” Arison revealed.

The ice cream smooth rhythm is already providing the backdrop for party events and street dances all over the Corporate Area because of the great mix of heavyweight acts and superstars.

Dancehall superstar Mavado leads out the project with High Life, where he boasts about his international weed-smoking credentials which crisscrosses time zones and continents. Red-hot dancehall act Ishawna has the breakout hit on the rhythm with the emotionally charged Restraining Order, which seems to have taken a life of its own because of its delicious subtext and real-life references to the end of her high-profile relationship with popular selector Foota Hype.Beenie Man returns to his ‘gallis roots’ as he outlines his gallis credentials.

Gyptian complements the rhythm perfectly with All On Me. Blak Ryno channels his inner Sean Kingston (Make Up Your Mind) as he expresses his love for his Side Chick, while Singer J shows off the incredible range of his voice on Your Love. Chi Ching brings his humour and street credentials to Up. Mr Lexx impresses with Do Road, while Munga teams up with Arison himself for I Life.

Gully Squad (GS) frontman Chase Cross has a new single called ‘Automatic’, which features a catchy singalong chorus that has caught the attention of underground mixtape DJs and street selectors.

“The fans dem a show me whole heap a love on the song on Facebook and Twitter. Most of them say they like the flow of the song, and they definitely love the hook,” Chase Cross said.

Automatic is now available on iTunes and other downloadable sites. The artiste said that he will pursue aggressive street promotion of the song beginning in August.

“The producers, Mansions Records/Vexx Bad Records, love the feedback so far, and they might even do a video,” he said.

Another single, Dem No Worry We on DJ Frass’ Gwaan Bad rhythm, has racked up more than 4,000 views on YouTube. Chase Cross has steadily improved as a recording artiste, abandoning the hip-hop flow that characterised his earlier recording efforts. Last year, Chase Cross got some major underground buzz with Nuh Beg Fren on the Pop Style rhythm for DJ Frassand he has continued to improve steadily.

“Mi just have to give thanks to Mavado, DJ Frass, and mi labelmates 3 Starr and Shaq One. We collaborate and share ideas, and the ting a get better, he said.

Mavado has been taking time out of his hectic schedule to do collaborations with each of the artistes signed to the label to boost their respective profiles and their confidence.He has new songs with each of the artistes, which will be released in the upcoming weeks.

Chase Cross drops new single

Complainant drops charges

A man is lucky today to have been set free after a complainant in the matter against him begged the judge not to go any further with the case on Friday, in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court.

The accused, Adive King, was charged with larceny after a quantity of ground provisions and a scale belonging to the complainant went missing. King pleaded guilty with explanation.

He told the court that a friend gave him the items to sell downtown.

King said, “Your Honour, is a friend give me it to sell, some tomato, peas and dem ting deh and him come a town and see me and him get dem back.”

The complainant told the court that he got back his scale and some of the seasoning.

The Senior Resident Magistrate then asked the complainant, “What you want me to do with him?”

“Give him a chance,” the complainant said in a soft tone.

King was subsequently admonished and discharged as no evidence was offered.

Man fatally shot as he drops off son at school

KINGSTON, Jamaica — A man was fatally shot close to the Tarrant Primary School off Molynes Road in Kingston Wednesday morning. 

He has been identified as Rohan Newman.

Police report that Newman dropped off his son at the primary school about 8:00. As he attempted to drive away he was approached by a lone gunman on foot who fired several shots in Newman’s direction.

He was hit multiple times but managed to drive a few metres before collapsing in the vehicle. Two small children who were in the vehicle were not injured. 

Investigations continue.

UN: Colombia coca area drops by 25%

8 August 2013 Last updated at 16:54 Narino, in the south, continues to have the highest density of coca plants The area of land planted with coca – the raw ingredient for cocaine – in Colombia has fallen by 25%, a UN report has said.

The land under coca cultivation is now about a third of that in 2001, says the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

While coca areas fell nationwide, they rose in three provinces plagued by rebels and drug gangs.

Colombia is one the world’s top three cocaine producers and has made the war on drugs one of its main priorities.

Prevention v eradication

The annual report by the UN’s Integrated Illicit Crops Monitoring System says that the land planted with coca bushes has dropped from 64,000 hectares in 2011 to 48,000 hectares in 2012, the lowest figure since monitoring started in Colombia more than a decade ago.

The report confirms preliminary figures quoted to the BBC by the Colombian Defence Minister in June.

Analysts say the fall in coca production suggests illegal groups which have so far financed themselves through drug trafficking may increasingly be moving into illegal gold and emerald mining, both of which have been increasing in Colombia.

The groups take advantage of the fact that, unlike coca or cocaine, gold and emeralds are legal to transport and sell.

Mine field

But the head of Colombia’s counter-narcotics police, Gen Luis Alberto Perez, told the BBC that the UN figures showed that their strategy to focus on the worst-affected areas had worked.

He said that even though the police had eradicated less coca than in previous years, the force had increased its presence in those regions where most of the coca was grown, preventing people from planting coca bushes in the first place.

He also praised the government’s social programmes, which aim to convince farmers to switch from growing coca to legal crops.

The UNODC report, which uses satellite imagery to map areas planted with coca, says that there was an increase in coca plantations in three provinces: Norte de Santander, Choco and Caqueta.

According to Gen Perez, police activity in these three provinces was hampered by left-wing Farc rebels and drug gangs.

The general says an increased use of landmines by these groups means that eradication workers cannot pull out the plants by hand without the risk of stepping on a mine.

Border trouble

The border regions have the highest density of coca plants, with the southern town of Tumaco again topping the list.

Gen Perez says a ban on aerial eradication – using planes to spray herbicides on coca plants – in a 10km-wide (6-mile wide) strip next to the border has made this area a magnet for drug growers.

Colombia agreed to the exclusion zone after Ecuador brought a complaint against its neighbour at the International Court of Justice in 2008 saying its territory was being poisoned by the spraying.

According to UN figures released earlier this week, coca growing also decreased in Bolivia.

The UNODC said coca cultivation had dropped by 7% between 2011 and 2012 to 25,300 hectares.

Bolivia is, along with Colombia and Peru, among the world’s top three producers of cocaine.

The figures for Peru are expected to be released over the next weeks.

It is also the title of Kartel’s book which has been out since June.According to an article posted on the website www. urbanislandz.com, Michael Dawson of Whirlwind Records, who is responsible for marketing both projects, is confident the 22-track album will impact Jamaican and overseas charts.Among the songs on The Voice of The Jamaican Ghetto are Poor People Revolution, Life We Living, Struggling and Bad Reputation.Dawson told the website that Kartel’s legal woes have prevented him and his team from properly promoting the album and book.The 37-year-old deejay, whose real name is Adidjah Palmer, is one of dancehall’s most controversial figures, through many run-ins with the law.His hit songs include Romping Shop (with Spice), Clarks, Freaky Gal and World Boss.Kartel is currently on trial in Kingston’s Home Circuit Court for the July 2011 murder of Barrington Bryan.Since he was detained on multiple homicide charges in September, 2011, many of Kartel’s songs have been released as part of compilation albums.

WHILE continuing to build their resume as a live band with regular dates in Europe and the United States, the Uprising band is also keen to make it as a recording unit.Black To I Roots is the title of the song the sextet is counting on to introduce them to mainstream radio. It is scheduled for release later this year as a forerunner to the band’s second album of the same name.“We intend to do full promotion around it…a video, the works,” said Darren Hamilton, the band’s manager. “The aim is to set things up for a strong 2014.”Like they did for Skifiya, their 2012 debut album, Uprising will produce the follow-up though Hamilton says they are open to outside ideas. While it will be released digitally, the plan is to make it available on compact disc and vinyl to satisfy a diverse market.“As important as the Internet is, there are people out there who still want the physical thing to read the credits and see the design. We can’t forget those fans,” said Hamilton.Uprising recently completed shows in New York City, Texas and California. They performed on the Sierra Nevada Music Festival in the Golden State, which Hamilton considers the high point of the trip.The Uprising band has been around for over 10 years. Its built around core members, drummer/vocalist Rashaun McAnuff, bassist Ruel Ashburn, dub poet/keyboardist Lloyd Palmer, guitarists Winston Bowen and Phillip Porter and percussionist Joseph Sutherland.Veteran musicians Allah Lloyd (of Chalice) and trombonist Nambo Robinson are regular collaborators.Jamaican bands, which seemed doomed to extinction with the advent of computers 30 years ago, have enjoyed a renaissance. The Edna Manley School of Music in Kingston has produced many of these aggregations, including C Sharp and Pentateuch.Along with journeyman unit Dub Tonic, C Sharp and Pentateuch have released albums. Uprising announced themselves as a recording unit with the song Brightest Light which was followed by Skyfiya.Hamilton says the group has a handful of summer dates in the pipeline.
