Silver, bronze for Jamaiac in sprint relays at World Junior Championships

Jamaica gained a silver and a bronze medal on the penultimate day of the IAAF World Junior Championships in Oregon on Saturday, with both sprint relay teams achieving a measure of success.

First, the female team of Sashalee Forbes, Kedisha Dallas, Saqukine Cameron and Natalliah Whyte grabbed silver in their 4x100m relay in a time of 43.97 seconds. This was the first medal for the females at the Championships.

USA, the host nation, has been enjoying a great deal of success in these Championships, and this continued with the gold medal in this race, in a time of 43.46. Germany placed third.

In the men’s 4×100, Jamaica placed third (39.12) with the USA again taking the gold in a time of 38.70 seconds.

Sweet River Abattoir and Supplies is set to become the latest addition to the junior stock market.   
The company will launch an initial public offer on August 12 to raise $179 million from the sale of  46.3 million ordinary shares.    
Sweet River will use the proceeds to reduce bank loans, complete construction, install a solar energy generation system as well as raise working capital.    
The company is in the business of  slaughtering and performing first level processing of pigs and small ruminants.

Silver medal to Tyler Mason in 110m hurdles at World Junior Championships

Tyler Mason ran an area record 13.05 in the men’s 110 meter hurdles but had to settle for silver, Jamaica’s first medal at the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships in Eugene Oregon.

Mason, the Jamaica College athlete was beaten by France’s Wilheim Belocian who became the first junior to break the 13 second barrier, with 12.99 seconds.

Mason also eclipsed the Jamaican national junior record of 13.24, set by Omar McLeod last year.

Jamaica seek boys' 100 metre title at World Junior Champs

Jamaica will be seeking to return to the top of the medal podium in the boys’ sprints at the World Junior Athletics Championships, July 22-27 in Eugene, Oregon in the USA.

But the island’s two fastest junior sprinters are unsure which events they will line up in Eugene.   

Between 2007 and 2010, Jamaica held the distinction of having the gold medal in the World Youth and World Junior Boys’ 100 metres. Dexter Lee became the first Jamaican to win the World Youth 100m title before going on to win back to back titles in the same event at the 2008 and 2010 World Junior Championships.

Jamaica lost the crown in 2012 when Odean Skeen took the bronze in the event in Barcelona, Spain.

Once again it will be difficult task for Jamaica to regain the 100m World Junior title. The American Trayvon Bromelll has already run a world junior record 9.97 this season.  But in Jevauhgn Minzie and Michael O’Hara,  the country has two very capable junior sprinters.

Minzie has a personal  best of 10.16 while O’Hara  has posted a PB of 10.19. Minzie, who lost to O’Hara at the National Junior Championships last month, says he is back to where he was at Boys’ Championships.

In fact he says his aim for the 100 metres is a sub-10 second clocking in Eugene.  The 100 and 200 metre double is always a tough challenge at the World Juniors. But 18 year old Minzie, who ran a personal best 20.37 for the 200 metres at Boys’ and Girls’ Championships, says he is ready for the double. While Minzie is ready for the 100 and 200 metre work load at his 2nd World Junior Champs,  O’Hara is uncertain.

Although he beat Minzie over both distances at the National Junior Trials, O’Hara is eyeing just one flat event in Eugene. And that is the 200 meters, for which he is the World Youth Champion. 

But, the big question is, is the 17 year old ready for the pressure of the World Junior Championships?

"Bravo" to junior athletes at CAC Championships

Visiting teams often struggle with Mexico’s altitude.

But when you add adverse weather in Morelia to the mix,  you get a picture of the trying conditions faced by Jamaican athletes to the Central American and Caribbean Championships. 

The athletes were pleased to return to the island’s warm sunshine on Monday. 

They had a 43 medal haul at the championships, 15 gold, 17 silver and 11 bronze, one short of the 2012 tally. 

But head coach Michael McIntosh provided the context which he says must be used to judge the performances.

“I am satisfied with the fact that these kids have really, really performed out of their skin”, he said. “The conditions were not what we would have liked, but these kids really acquitted themselves well and continued the tradition of Jamaican trackand field.

It’s a busy summer for the nation’s juniors, as next up is the World Junior Championship in the United States.  

A 40 member team has been selected for those championships in Eugene, Oregon, scheduled to run from July 22 to 27.

Talented Rastafarian chanter, Junior X, whose inspiration comes from the Most High, is on a mission to eliminate negativity, through his music and positive lyrics.

The cultural entertainer said he wantsto spread hope and positivity to all his fans.

In the 1990s, Junior X began to define his new lyrical style. He developed his talents working at top-flight producer David Kelly’s studio.

Though Kelly thought he should have developed his vocal talent, he was impressed with his raw and potent lyrical content.

A few years later, Junior X started working with Dennis Wright (Chaka Demus and Pliers). Seizing on this opportunity, he co-wrote songs with the hit-making duo.

He has appeared on Rebel Salute, headlined shows in Toronto and California.

Currently Junior X works with Revolutionary Records where he has found a place to flourish and take his music to a whole new audience.

After more than a decade of developing and honing his art, it was in March 2011 that Junior X’s debut album, Plead My Cause, was released by Revolutionary Records featuring tracks, The Pill and Gangster Life.

Plead My Cause showcases how his spirituality directs him toward joy and positivity. He wants his listeners to be strong, powerful and righteous because “now is not the time to sleep or turn the other cheek”.

Junior squash champs Morrison, Mahfood win CAC, Commonwealth Games qualifier

JUNIOR Squash champions Julian Morrison and Jake Mahfood stormed back from early-round losses to take the top two positions, respectively, in the first round of qualification for the 2014 Caribbean and Central American (CAC) Games and the 2014 Commonwealth Games, which was contested on the weekend at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston.

Morrison, the All-Jamaica Under-19 boys’ champion, proved indefatigable as he battled through several hard matches to win the three-day tournament. After being highly favoured to skate into the final he suffered an upset at the hands of veteran Bruce Levy, who beat him 10/12, 10/12, 11/8, 11/9, 11/5 in the last stage of the round-robin segment of the tournament on Saturday night.The loss meant that Morrison had to face tournament favourite, Caribbean Under-19 champion Ashante Smith, in the semi-finals on Sunday morning rather than in the final, as had been widely predicted. Morrison rose to the occasion, toppling Smith 11/7, 6/11, 11/7, 11/6 to make it to the final.All-Jamaica Under-17 boys’ champion Jake Mahfood also proved his mettle by rebounding from an opening- round loss to Smith. The fiery teenager came back to beat veteran Joey Levy 11/8, 12/10, 11/6 and then followed it up with an 11/2, 6/11, 11/8, 11/5 win over Bruce Levy.In the final, Mahfood took a commanding lead by winning the first two games; but then Morrison roared back to answer his junior national teammate shot-for-shot and eventually sealed the victory 6/11, 8/11, 11/8, 11/5, 11/7.Bruce Levy took third place after Smith conceded due to injury. The players were tied at 10-10 in the third game with Smith up 11/5, 11/3 when the Under-19 Caribbean champion suffered a dramatic mishap and had to withdraw from the match.In the ladies draw, squash queen Karen Anderson beat All Jamaica and Caribbean Under-15 girls champion and reigning All Jamaica Ladies Champion Alyssa Mullings in the final. In a highly anticipated match, Anderson, the 12-time All Jamaica Ladies Champion, proved she still had the goods by dismissing the rising star 11/9, 11/8, 11/9. In addition, former senior national team player Tracy Binnie beat Melissa Lue-Yen 11/9, 11/2, 12/10.“It was great to see the junior players stepping up and the youngsters did well to make it through the first stage of qualification,” Gill Binnie, Secretary of the Jamaica Squash Association (JSA), explained.“The next stage will be even more challenging, but they have served notice to the senior players that they are prepared to fight for a place on the national team,” she added.Morrison and Mahfood as well as Anderson, Mullings, Lue-Yen and Binnie will go on to compete in the final-round of qualification for the CAC and Commonwealth Games which will be held in April 2014. Sunshine to the world - Junior netballers take Championship bronze

JAMAICA’S Sunshine Girls shone brightly after retaining their bronze medal at the World Youth Netball Championship in Scotland with an easy 52-33 win over England yesterday.

Just as they did four years ago in the Cook Islands, Jamaica turned back England for third place, but this time, New Zealand flipped the script on Australia, taking the gold with a 52-47 victory.The Young Sunshine Girls, who lost to New Zealand in the semi-final, proved too much for England, leading from start to finish and ran out winners by 19 points.Playing without the injured goal shooter Shantel Slater, who was on crutches after suffering an injury in the semi-final, Jamaica led 14-11, 25-18, and 40-23 after the three quarters for a comfortable victory and a place on the podium.“Mission accomplished. We on the podium,” said Jamaica Netball Association (JNA) president Marva Bernard via Facebook.“Congratulations to the ladies, their coaching staff, management and support team. Well done. I am so proud of them. We promised to leave no less than we came and we did,” Bernard added.This was the fourth time Jamaica and England have faced each other in recent times and the Vangalee Williams-led outfit was very confident, having won the previous three encounters.“That was our aim from the start; to be on the podium, and thank God we accomplished that tonight,” said Williams in an audio interview provided by the organisers.“It was challenging, for one. We started out a little bit rocky, but we picked up ourselves off the ground and hit it from the get-go. England just couldn’t catch us back,” she noted.“We are overwhelmed. JAMAICAN officials are optimistic about breaking the dominance of perennial overall winners Guyana at the Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Junior Championships in Trinidad & Tobago.

“The last few years they (Guyana) have been the dominant force, but I think this year may have a different outcome,” team manager Gill Binnie said during last Thursday’s squad announcement at the Liguanea Club.The delegation left the island on Saturday for the tournament which gets under way today.The one-week-long Championships will feature male and female team categories as well as individual competitions ranging through age groups of Under-13s, Under-15s, Under-17s and Under-19s.The long-legged 14-year-old starlet Alyssa Mullings, an all-conquering giant on the local squash scene at both the youth and senior levels, is favoured to successfully defend her Under-15 Girls’ title.Despite Mullings’ undoubted class, the Guyanese — current holders of the overall title — are the obvious team favourites. Last year, Jamaica hosted the competition and placed fourth overall.But according to Binnie, the competition-ripe Jamaican Boys’ team will be a major force and can win if they play to their “full potential”.“I think our Boys’ team will do very well. Our older boys have come right through the system and now they are ready. They have that experience and all the extra training they’ve done this year,” she said, while adding that the tournament will be a “learning ground” for the girls.Binnie noted the key acquisition of Canadian Rene Denis, who has coached the team since February. She believes the players have improved since his arrival and insisted that high on the Jamaica Squash Association’s (JSA) agenda is to find a way to retain his services.“We brought him in for six months, so that time is up in August and it’s very difficult because as you know, sponsorship is hard to come by. Now we are hoping we can find a sponsor on board to bring him back in September because if we lose him, we will be in problems.“We need to build on what was started and we have lots of young players,” said Binnie, an active component in Jamaica’s squash movement for over 20 years.The 18-year-old male captain Ashante Smith, a University of Technology student, talked up Jamaica’s chances and expressed gratitude to Denis in giving the team “a really good chance of winning this year”.The squad’s female leader Jessica Perkins, also 18, is a student at George Washington University. JAMAICA’S Junior squash players have made it to four of the eight finals being contested at the Caribbean Area Squash Association’s (CASA) Junior Championships now under way in Trinidad and Tobago.All Jamaica Under-13 champion Mia Mahfood, Under-15 contender Jonathan Walker, team captain Ashante Smith and local squash star Alyssa Mullings will all play for the top prize in their various age groups today.Reigning All Jamaica Under-15 champion Alyssa Mullings sailed into the final following easy wins in the quarters and the semi-finals. The defending Under-15 Caribbean champion made short work of her quarter-final round opponent Olivia Lindsay, beating the Bermudian, 11/1, 11/4, 11/3, and then dispatching Alexandria Yearwood of Trinidad in the semi-finals 11/2, 11/5, 11/2.The win brings the 14-year-old Mullings one step closer to completing a personal hat-trick, as she seeks to retain her regional crown, having already taken the All Jamaica Junior and Senior titles this year. Mullings will face Barbadian Amanda Haywood in the final today.Mahfood beat Makeeda Harding of Guyana 11/4, 11/7, 11/9 in the quarters and then dismissed Charlotte Toogood of Bermuda 11/6, 11/6, 11/2 in the semi-finals. The 11-year-old will now face Barbadian, Megan Best as she goes for her first regional title.Similarly, Walker fought off Shermane Griffiths in the quarter-finals, beating the Barbadian 12/14, 12/10, 11/7, 11/2, and then beat Dylan Pratt of Bermuda 11/6, 11/3, 11/7 in the semi-finals. The Jamaican will go head-to-head with Ben Mendecki of Guyana for the Under-15 Championship.Team captain Ashante Smith was also in top form, easily dismissing Zaki Williams of Barbados 11-3, 11-2, 11-2 to book a spot in semi-finals where he promptly dismissed Guyana’s JC Jeffrey 11/4, 9/11, 11/6, 11/1. Smith will do battle against Mandela Patrick of Trinidad and Tobago today.The Championships end on July 28.

SOFTWARE Automation International Limited (SAIL), through two goals from Jason Willetts, defeated Terra Nova Hotel 4-2 in the final of the Burger King Junior Friendly International Polo Tournament at the Caymanas Polo Club recently.

Preceding the championship match, ATL Autohaus defeated Burger King 6-3 in the subsidiary final to lift the Terra Nova Silver Cup.After a week-long development programme for Jamaicans and players from United States, Great Britain, Spain and Trinidad & Tobago, the competition culminated in plenty of excitement.The SAIL team with Abi Burns and Spencer Jordan of the US, along with Jamaican Dylan Wong and Willetts of Spain, grabbed the early lead through the latter, who drove a hard shot to score a 55-yard effort and put SAIL 1-0 up in the first chukka.Savannah Hussey, who was pressing all the time, pulled one back for Terra Nova four minutes into the second chukka to make it one-all, but the competitive Wong scored from a goal mouth scramble to make it 2-1.Jordan and Willetts added the other goals in the third and fourth chukkas, respectively, to end the contest 4-2 after Terra Nova had pulled back a goal.The SAIL team lifted the Burger King Trophy and individual prizes from the restaurant company.Willetts, who was named most valuable player of the final, said he enjoyed the “tough competition” and added that “most of the players here in Jamaica are very talented”.Meanwhile, Nicholas Mundell, brand and sponsorship manager at Burger King, was beaming after seven glorious days of polo.“Looking back at it, this is why Burger King is on board for the past seven years. We saw some great polo displayed by the camp members. In addition, I would like to commend the entire organising committee for making this event a success.“As a brand that is always giving back to the community we are more than satisfied that children benefitted from this initiative,” he said.The week-long activities included a four-day junior polo camp, along with the semi-final and final. Junior Squash gets timely boost from Burger King

JAMAICA’S team to the 2013 Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Junior Championships received a timely $400,000 boost from restaurant franchise Burger King during yesterday’s squad announcement at the Liguanea Club.

The Jamaicans, coached by Canadian Rene Denis, depart tomorrow for the July 22-28 tournament in Trinidad & Tobago.A total of eight teams, including eight-time reigning overall champions Guyana, are set to participate in the competition, which is regarded as an integral stepping stone for young players.The tournament will comprise age groups ranging from Under-13s, Under-15s, Under-17s to Under-19s. It will be split into male and female categories, as well as individual and team competitions.Denis, who started working with the team in February, expressed confidence that Jamaica can improve on their fourth overall placing on home soil last year.He noted that the players are “a lot stronger” than earlier in the year, and added that they have developed into more “tactical and patient” competitors.“I think their chances are very good. I think we have a reasonable chance of winning the Under-19, Under-17 and Under-15 as Boys’ and possibly the Under-13s. SECOND seeds Andrew Bicknell and Shelitta Haughton captured the Boys’ and Girls’ 18 and under singles titles at the 2013 Blue Mountain Caribbean Junior Tennis Championships at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston on Friday.Fifteen-year-old Bicknell defeated top seed Dimitri Bird in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. After his victory, Bicknell, the All-Jamaica Junior Boys’ 18 and under singles champion earlier this month, said he was very pleased.He added that this was part of his preparation for next Monday’s start of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Jamaica Invitational Tournament to be played at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre.Meanwhile, second seed Haughton came from a set down to defeat top seed and All-Jamaica Junior Girls’ 18 and under singles champion Michealann Denton 5-7, 6-4 (15-13 tie-breaker).Haughton said it was a good game and she was very proud of her victory.“She had beaten me in the All-Jamaica singles final earlier this month and this I can say is a revenge victory for me,” Haughton said.The 17-year-old Haughton, who attends the KBC Learning Centre in Kingston, rallied nicely in the tie-breaker down 2-7, tied at 9-9 and 13-13 before winning the next two points to clinch the match 15-13.In the Boys’ 16 and under singles final, Blaise Bicknell, seeded at seven, beat top seed Kyle Martin in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, while the Girls’ 16 and under singles final was won by unseeded 10-year-old Jenna Harrison of Hillel Academy, beating unseeded Jade Wilkinson in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.The Boys’ 14 and under singles final was won by unseeded Upkioronfo Ikolo of Grenada, who beat unseeded Jean Phillipe Murray of St Lucia 4-6, 6-3 (10-4 tie-breaker). Top seed Michela Stephens won the Girls’ 14 and under singles title with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Jenna Harrison.Top seed Chatani Karan defeated unseeded Zane Walters in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1 to capture the Boys’ 12 and under singles title.Meanwhile, Jamaica captured the team event title by beating both the Cayman Islands and Grenada 3-0.

TEN Caribbean countries will be vying for Championship status in the 2013 Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championships from July 1-6 at the North Sound Golf Course in Grand Cayman.Jamaica will be fielding a team of nine players, who are expected to compete in six categories. Zandre Roye is the lone competitor in the boys’ 16 & 17 category. His female counterpart Sherisse Walker will play in the girls’ 16 & 17 group.Jordan Lowe and Romaine Evans are in the boys’ 14 & 15 competition, while Kaitlin Robertson is the sole representative in the girls’ 14 & 15 category.Justin Borrowes and Sebert Walker will play in the boys’ 11-13 Championship event alongside Kei Harris and Tiana Cruz (girls’ 11-13), who complete Jamaica’s team.This year’s tournament will be the 26th staging of the regional junior championships. The team is expected to perform well under the guidance of coach Jason Lopez and team manager Sebert Walker.
