A close battle for owners" championship

WITH the jockeys’ championship already decided, there is another close battle going on, this time it is the owners’ championship involving leaders Elite Bloodstock Limited, Hamark Farms, defending champion Carlton Watson and Elias Haloute.

With just three races left in the year, approximately $2,918,050 separate first from fourth. Elite Bloodstock leads this race, with $1,415,450 in front of Hamark Farms, who is just $663,100 ahead of third place Carlton Watson. Elias Haloute occupies fourth place, some $839,500 behind Watson.

The Elite Bloodstock horses are trained by Richard Azan and while they have no runners in the top grade they are well represented all round. Franfield, one of Elite’s better horses, is developing quite nicely being a late bloomer and is sure to have an earning presence in the upcoming Harry Jackson Cup scheduled to be run on Boxing Day. Border Line, Piscean Rocket and Edison are some other top earnings for the leader, who is favoured to take the title.

The chances of Hamark Farms winning the championships have been dented somewhat with the recent retirement of speedball and money earner Bubbling Angeline and also Ladylike. Hamark, however, has the filly Come Dance With Me, one of the top juveniles to race thus far this season. Come Dance With Me will be present in the Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes on Boxing Day. For Hamark to win, Come Dance With must win the major juvenile event. Hamark is also represented by Crucial Appeal.

Watson has a number of horses in the stables of Lawrence Freemantle, Patrick Chang and the champion Wayne DaCosta and is expected to have a number of runners on the programme each raceday to the end of the season on December 27.

Haloute can’t be left out as his horses are trained by the in-form Anthony Nunes. Haloute owns Alacrann who will be a strong contender in the Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes, having displayed his credentials by recently defeating Polly B and Come Dance With Me.

Sammy named in St Lucia training squad for Windward Islands championship

CASTRIES, St Lucia (CMC) — West Indies Twenty20 captain Darren Sammy heads a list of 34 players called up by national selectors here to prepare for next month’s Windward Islands senior two-day championship.

Sammy is a member of the West Indies one-day team which left the Caribbean Saturday for India for a five-match tour, which also includes one Twenty20 International, and which runs from

October 8-22.

The Windward Islands championship runs from October 30 to November 5 here.

Johnson Charles, who has represented the West Indies in T20 and One-Day International formats, along with orthodox left-arm spinner Garey Mathurin, who has represented the Windies in T20Is, have also been named.

Also included are a number of players who have represented the Windward Islands in different formats of the game like Dalton Polius, Keddy Lesporis, Sergio Fedee, and Craig Emmanuel.

Central Castries’ opening batsman Stephen Naitram, who scored four centuries in this year’s Division One competition, has also been called up.

Meanwhile, left-arm, orthodox spinner Marlon O’Brien has earned a recall following a three-year lay-off from national cricket. He had a consistent and successful season with the ball that helped the defending champions Central Castries into their second straight final.

Jamaica's women's basketballers win again at Caribbean Championship

The winning run of the national women’s basketball team continues at the Caribbean Championship in the British Virgin Islands.  

The Group ‘B’ winners defeated the U.S Virgin Islands 49-46 on Friday, to book their place in the final.

The Jamaicans now have a chance to win their first title since 2006.  

They will play the winner of the evening’s other semi-final between the Dominican Republic and Trinidad and Tobago who Jamaica had defeated en route to topping their group.

The CB Pan Chicken Championship is the ultimate food and entertainment experience in Jamaica.

The 2014 season, launched at the Bank of Jamaica lawn on Wednesday, gets even better with a wider reach, and more prize money.

“The Pan Chicken Championship takes place over a six-month period throughout the island and has quickly become the go-to event on the social calendar. The championship series brings together the best of food, fun and entertainment. Families, friends, and communities come together to celebrate great food from real people,” Alicia Bogues, CB Chicken brand manager said. “And, one of the greatest things about the CB Pan Chicken Championship is that every event is free to the public and participants.”

Firing up on Saturday, July 5 at 10 a.m. at the Manchester High School, the 2014 CB Pan Chicken Championship kicks off with the central regional elimination. From here the competition will move to the east on August 23, then west on September 27 before crowning the champion at

the grand final on November 23. Two parish winners will be selected at each regional event, resulting in 26 finalists vying for more than $1 million in cash and prizes.

Now in its 9th year, Bogues revealed that the championship has joined forces with the Social Development Commission (SDC) in a move to enhance the competition.

Another new addition to the ‘Pan’ family, she explained, is Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS) who brings more prize money and business development workshops. Courtesy of JNBS, the grand champion will receive a $250,000 business grant and, for the first time, the first and second runners-up will also receive business grants valued at $100,000 and $50,000, respectively. This is in addition to the $500,000 plus prize money from CB Chicken.

Comedian Pretty Boy Floyd will host the central regional elimination with entertainment by Jermaine Edwards, Goddy Goddy and Bugle. The fun starts at 10 a.m.

JAMAICA’S Sunshine Girls shone brightly after retaining their bronze medal at the World Youth Netball Championship in Scotland with an easy 52-33 win over England yesterday.

Just as they did four years ago in the Cook Islands, Jamaica turned back England for third place, but this time, New Zealand flipped the script on Australia, taking the gold with a 52-47 victory.The Young Sunshine Girls, who lost to New Zealand in the semi-final, proved too much for England, leading from start to finish and ran out winners by 19 points.Playing without the injured goal shooter Shantel Slater, who was on crutches after suffering an injury in the semi-final, Jamaica led 14-11, 25-18, and 40-23 after the three quarters for a comfortable victory and a place on the podium.“Mission accomplished. We on the podium,” said Jamaica Netball Association (JNA) president Marva Bernard via Facebook.“Congratulations to the ladies, their coaching staff, management and support team. Well done. I am so proud of them. We promised to leave no less than we came and we did,” Bernard added.This was the fourth time Jamaica and England have faced each other in recent times and the Vangalee Williams-led outfit was very confident, having won the previous three encounters.“That was our aim from the start; to be on the podium, and thank God we accomplished that tonight,” said Williams in an audio interview provided by the organisers.“It was challenging, for one. We started out a little bit rocky, but we picked up ourselves off the ground and hit it from the get-go. England just couldn’t catch us back,” she noted.“We are overwhelmed. MIAMI, Florida — CONCACAF on Friday unveiled the logo for the inaugural CONCACAF Under-15 Championship to be held in the Cayman Islands in August.The design, which features a stingray — a marine creature emblematic of the host CONCACAF Member Association — was designed by Verity Byrne, an11-year-old student at Cayman Prep School in Grand Cayman. Students across the island participated in the contest to provide the design.In celebrating the accomplishment of Cayman hosting its first-ever regional championship event, the contest called on students across the island to design their own logos for the competition. The competition was extended to over 15 primary schools in Cayman and several students, ranging in age from six to 11 years old, submitted their own colourful and innovative designs, with Verity’s logo ultimately being chosen as the winner.“The aim of the contest was to further celebrate the Under-15 Tournament being hosted in Cayman,” said Bruce Blake, first vice-president of the Cayman Islands Football Association.“As we are hosting the inaugural Under-15 tournament, we wanted to give our primary school students the opportunity to feel included in the organisation of the tournament by allowing them to submit designs for the logo. I would like to thank all the schools that participated and the students that submitted designs.”Cayman will host this year’s edition of the CONCACAF Under-15 Championship, the first regional championship held by the Confederation for young men at this level. Twenty-five teams from across the region will participate in the event, to be held at four different venues on Grand Cayman between August 14 and 25.
