WESTERN BUREAU: Dimitri Ffrench, the man who reportedly broke into a hotel room at the Secrets Resort in Montego Bay and stole a number of items, in June, was offered bail when he appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
Twenty-six-year-old Ffrench, of a Molynes Road address in Kingston, was offered bail in the sum of $350,000 with three sureties, and had his case set for mention on October 28.
It is alleged that sometime in June this year, Ffrench went on the grounds of the Secrets Resort property in Montego Bay and broke into a guest’s hotel room where he stole two iPhones, two iPods, US$1,000 (J$152,653), US$500 (J$56,085.31), and items of jewellery.
Yesterday, Ffrench’s attorney, Martyn Thomas, made a successful bail application for his client before presiding magistrate Carolyn Tie, during which he argued that the defendant was a suitable candidate for bail.
“I submit that Mr Ffrench is not a flight risk. He was taken (by the police) from premises at Breadnut Way, where he lives,” said lawyer Thomas.
But clerk of the court, Yanique Henry, objected to Ffrench getting bail, on the grounds that he reportedly spends more time in Montego Bay than at his home address.
“He was not at home when he was arrested. He spends a lot of time in Montego Bay, and the police are not sure where he resides when he is in Montego Bay,” Henry said of Ffrench.
The court was also told that the prosecution’s case file was not ready as the arresting officer’s statement was still outstanding.
“I will offer him bail in the sum of $350,000 with three sureties,” RM Tie said, concerning Ffrench. “He will report to the Half-Way Tree Police Station every Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., and he is to stay out of St James, save for court dates,” the magistrate added as she set the case for mention on October 28.
