Cell phone thief fined $20,000

A 19-year-old construction worker who robbed a female complainant of her cell phone was fined $20,000 or ordered to serve six months imprisonment in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

Charged with simple larceny is Andrew Walker.

The court heard that on the day of the incident, the accused robbed the complainant of an Alcatel cell phone and as he tried to escape was chased by persons. He was later seen by the police and apprehended.

His attorney begged Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey for leniency.

“What caused you to do it?” the magistrate asked.

“I really never want to do it,” he responded.

“I promise, I won’t do it again. I swear, I won’t do it again,” he added. The magistrate then told him, “Yield not to temptation for yielding is sin. If I could sing I would sing it for you.”

Accused battery thief denied bail

One of the accused men considered to be a significant player in a major battery-stealing ring from telecommunications service providers was denied bail in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

He is Oneil Nicely of Mango Valley, St Mary, charged with receiving stolen property and possession of criminal property. He is charged along with another man.

The allegations are that between January 2013 and July 2014, more than 2,300 radio base station batteries were stolen from cell sites across the island, along with diesel fuel used in the generators. The theft and damage to equipment reportedly cost one company more than $100 million.

The police, it is being alleged, recovered batteries from Nicely.

In court, the prosecution denied bail on the basis that Nicely had no fixed address and that he allegedly sold the batteries to persons. The police want to recover the batteries. However persons want their money and also want to kill him.

Resident Magistrate Lorna Shelly-Williams ordered that the accused be taken back to court on October 10 in order to have his address verified. A bail application is also expected to be made then.

Liquor thief to know fate today

A man who stole liquor from MegaMart in St Andrew and walked out of the store with the goods, will be sentenced today after being remanded for the weekend.

Charged with larceny is Ricardo Wright.

On Friday when the matter was brought up in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court, Wright pleaded guilty and offered the court an explanation.

The goods, a box of Wray and Nephew white rum, is valued at over $23, 000.

“Your honour I have three kids to support and is the first time,” said Wright.

Senior RM Judith Pusey said: “So the man who own MegaMart don’t have any kids to support?”

A fingerprint order was made against Wright.

Speaker thief on probation pleads guilty

A Yallahs man who was on a three-year probation for housebreaking and larceny, pleaded guilty to illegal possession of a speaker when he appeared in the Yallahs Resident Magistrate’s Court recently.

He returns to court for sentencing on October 24.

The case was that of 32-year-old Charles Murray of a Yallahs address in St Thomas, an area rampant with housebreaking and the theft of electrical and musical equipment particularly from churches.

The court heard that after a series of break-ins in the community the police secured a warrant to search Murray’s home based on intelligence and his track record. During the search the police found a silver speaker box which Murray said was given to him by his father.

However, when the police contacted the father he denied any knowledge of the equipment.

The convict was subsequently taken into custody and slapped with the charge of illegal possession of the speaker box on September 5.

Bicycle thief gets thirty days

A man accused of stealing a bicycle was sentenced to 30 days’ imprisonment when he appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court recently.

Charged with simple larceny is 26-year-old Onazan Bennett of Greenwich Farm in St Andrew, who pleaded guilty to the offence.

Allegations are that on April 2, about 12 p.m., the 19-year-old complainant left his bicycle valued at $11,000, outside a Digicel retail outlet on Half-Way Tree Road, and went inside to purchase a mobile phone. The complainant returned to the spot where the bicycle was parked, and saw the accused riding off.

The court heard that the complainant gave chase, alerting nearby police officers who joined in the pursuit.

The complainant told the court that the accused man appeared determined to steal the bicycle, and that he did not falter while making his escape. Police personnel were able to apprehend the accused.

Urging Bennett to provide a reasonable explanation, the senior resident magistrate quizzed him as to why he should not serve time for the offence. Bennett then said it was an act of desperation, as he had discovered that he had a cyst near his right armpit that required an expensive x-ray.

Acknowledging that the offence carried a maximum sentence of four years imprisonment, the sitting magistrate sentenced Bennett to serve 30 days in prison, since the bicycle was returned to the complainant in fair condition.

ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — One of four men who were taken into custody in relation to the larceny of cattle in Malvern, St. Elizabeth on July 17, was remanded when he appeared before the Black River Resident Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, July 23.He is 24-year-old Donwayne Wright of Ridge Pen district, Watchwell, St Elizabeth. Wright and three other men were arrested when a group of police officers intercepted a truck in which they were travelling. The cattle were discovered in the back of the truck. Further investigations revealed that the five animals were stolen from a farmer in the area. Wright was then charged on July 23 with Larceny of Cattle.
