Man accused of stealing liquor remanded

ST CATHERINE, Jamaica — A St Catherine man found himself in trouble with the law after he allegedly stole a pack of biscuits and four bottles of liquor from a Rubis service station in Spanish Town.

Mark Thomas, on Tuesday, pleaded not guilty to a charge of simple larceny and was remanded into custody until February 17 when his case will again be mentioned.

Thomas was arrested after workers say they saw him leaving the convenience store of the service station with two bottles of Guinness, two bottles of Dragon stout, a bottle of cooking oil and a pack of Nibble biscuits.

“How do you know that the items were removed,” Resident Magistrate Natalie Brooks asked the complainant, who responded that the man did not have a receipt and that he confessed to taking the items.

However, Thomas told the court that he bought the bottles of stout from a street vendor and the cooking oil from a wholesale.

“Do you have any other matter before the court?” the magistrate asked.

“No,” Thomas replied, before informing the court that he had previously been before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on a similar matter.

Woman who neglected children remanded

A St Catherine woman who left her four children unprotected for days, plead guilty to four counts of negligence in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

Angella Foster of Point Hill district, St Catherine, is charged with negligence.

When the matter was called up before Resident Magistrate Anmarie Nembhard on September 25, Foster pleaded guilty.

The RM expressed concerns about the accused’s conduct, as she failed to account for two of the victims.

She was subsequently ordered remanded in custody until October 16, when she is to be sentenced.

Allegations are that in March last year, she left her four underage children at home without care and protection.

The police was alerted, and an investigation launched by Detective Corporal Krishna Walker.

She was subsequently charged with negligence.

A man who was held in a stolen car in St Elizabeth was ordered remanded when he appeared in court yesterday.

O’Brian Parchment, 27-year-old air condition technician of St Elizabeth was denied bail when he appeared in the Spanish Town Magistrate’s Court.

The defence attorney told the court her client is a trained professional.

She said that after Parchment repaired the car’s air condition, he was test driving it when he was held.

Resident Magistrate Anmarie Nembhard told the lawyer that the accused from all indications, played a role in crime.

Allegations are that in March this year a 2001 Honda motor car was stolen in Portmore, St Catherine.

On August 27, police personnel from Santa Cruz police in St Elizabeth were in search of a car that was involved in a robbery.

The accused seen driving a car fitting the description.

It was stopped and the police observed that the key ignition was damaged and other irregularities.

Parchment was held and further investigations conducted which revealed that was stolen in St Catherine.

He is to reappear in court on October 7 when the matter will again be mentioned.

One of two accused swindlers remanded

Two men accused of swindling an unsuspecting woman out of her hard earned cash, promising her high end wristwatches, but supplying her with counterfeit versions instead, were hauled before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court last Thursday.

Charged with larceny by trick are Sowdane McKenzie and Jason Kameka.

Allegations are that on June 26, the female complainant gave the accused men US$20,000 and J$100,000 to purchase one Cartier watch and one Hublot watch. Much to the complainant’s dismay, she was reportedly displeased as the products purported to be genuine, however, turned out to be poor bogus versions of the products she intended to purchase. It is said that she demanded her money back from the men, but was never refunded.

Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey ordered Kameka further remanded while McKenzie had his bail extended. Both men are to reappear in court on August 30 for a mention hearing.

Disc jockey on fraud rap remanded

A 35-year-old disc jockey was hauled before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, after he allegedly pretended that he could obtain jobs for the complainants overseas.

Charged with obtaining money by means of false pretences is Mark Penaydo of a St Elizabeth address.

The Crown alleges that the accused pretended that he could secure overseas employment for the complainants at hotels in the United States, which resulted in them lodging $J31, 500 to his bank account.

In court, Senior Resident Magistrate (RM) Judith Pusey demanded to know how Penaydo managed to convince the complainants to deposit the amount in his account.

However, he did not give an answer the RM found satisfactory.

It was revealed that the accused previously had 18 charges of a similar nature in St Elizabeth. He was therefore remanded until August 20.

Three St James men charged in connection with the theft of a woman’s cellular phone in May were remanded in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court on Monday, until July 28, to allow one of them to get a lawyer.

Ewen Doyle and Keith Forbes, from Montego Bay, are charged with robbery with aggravation against Alexia Reid, while Christopher Wedderburn, also from MoBay, is charged with receiving stolen property.

Allegations are that, on May 8 about 11 p.m., Reid was walking along Barnett Street in Montego Bay when two men, one armed with a ratchet knife, robbed her of her handbag and her BlackBerry phone. Reid reported the matter to the police and Doyle and Forbes were later pointed out in an identification parade.

It is further alleged that, on June 12, acting on information, police went to the Charles Gordon Market and saw Wedderburn with a cellular phone, identified as Reid’s. Wedderburn was subsequently held.

Presiding magistrate Wilson Smith was told that, despite the prosecution’s readiness, Wedderburn had not yet got a lawyer.

“I cannot afford a lawyer, your honour,” Wedderburn told RM Smith.

“That is why you have legal aid. If you do not have the money, you do not pay …” said RM Smith.

A policeman accused of beating the aunt of a teenager he is accused of raping was remanded when he appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

He is Constable Andrew Thomas, 28, from the Morant Bay Police Station in St Thomas.

When the matter came up in court, Thomas’ lawyer made a strenuous bail application which was denied by the court. He was subsequently ordered remanded until July 29, 2014, when the matter again will be mentioned.

The policeman’s appearance in court arose from an incident in St Catherine where he was said to have sexually assaulted a 17-year-old girl who is reportedly the niece of his common-law wife.

The child reportedly related her ordeal to her aunt and the accused lured the woman to a section of Eltham in St Catherine where he was said to have beaten her.

Reports are that three tyres were placed over her and then he threw a liquid substance all over the tyres.

He reportedly struck a lighter and attempted to set her ablaze, however, she was spared after begging him to spare her.

A subsequent report was made followed by an investigation and a ruling was handed down by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions that he be charged with rape and attempted murder.

TAJ employee in billion dollar racket remanded

The man at the centre of  the J$1 billion fraud racket was remanded when he appeared before the Corporate Area Criminal Court on Monday.

He is Christopher Moore an employee of  Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) and a resident of  Portmore in St. Catherine.

Moore who  is scheduled answer several charges including fraud and breaches of  the Cyber Crime Act, will return to court on July 21.

It’s alleged that over an unspecified period, Moore, an Information Technology (IT) expert employed to the East Street branch of  the TAJ, manipulated the system and reduced tax assessments of  companies and individuals.

After the TAJ assessed taxpayers, Moore would enter the computer system, reduce the tax levied resulting in the Government losing more than one billion dollars.

It’s also alleged that he collected fees.

The Revenue Protection Division in the Ministry of  Finance which led  an operation on June 20, seized documents and computers at Moore’s house with the names of  individuals and companies.

The year long operation, which also involved the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Taskforce, stretched across the Corporate Area and St. Catherine.

A police constable who allegedly left his service pistol at the scene of a robbery at a wholesale in Harbour View, St Andrew, was on Monday remanded in custody when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court.The police officer, Patrick Ingram, allegedly carried out the early morning robbery with the help of two civilians, one of whom was also remanded.The officer, who was assigned in the Kingston Eastern Police Division, was remanded along with his co-accused Brandon Nelson on charges of robbery with aggravation, receiving stolen property, and aiding and abetting robbery with aggravation.Another civilian, Bryan Barnes, was also charged in the incident but was offered bail on medical grounds. His bail was extended.According to police reports, on July 29, about 10:10 am, Ingram and one of the civilians went to the complainant’s business place and told him that they were both police officers and were investigating illegal cigarettes.The men reportedly held the proprietor at gunpoint and robbed the store of $100,000, cigarettes and other items before leaving.However, it is reported that Ingram left his pistol and when he returned for it he was held while the other two accused were later accosted.When the case was mentioned, the prosecutor informed the court that Ingram is to face an identification parade in relation to other issues in another parish.However, the attorneys representing Ingram and Nelson informed the magistrate that they would be applying for bail on the next court date, scheduled for September 20.Police process a recent crime scene in the Corporate Area (Observer file photo)

MANDEVILLE, Manchester – A Manchester taxi operator who is charged for allegedly molesting his teenage daughter was remanded when he appeared in the Mandeville Resident Magistrate’s court on Wednesday.He will return to court on August 28. The incident reportedly took place after his daughter visited him at his Greenvale home in Manchester. The man was on bail in another sexual offence charge at the time of the incident involving his daughter.Late last year the taxi driver who plies the Greenvale to Mandeville route was charged for the rape of a 12-year-old girl reported to be his goddaughter. ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — One of four men who were taken into custody in relation to the larceny of cattle in Malvern, St. Elizabeth on July 17, was remanded when he appeared before the Black River Resident Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, July 23.He is 24-year-old Donwayne Wright of Ridge Pen district, Watchwell, St Elizabeth. Wright and three other men were arrested when a group of police officers intercepted a truck in which they were travelling. The cattle were discovered in the back of the truck. Further investigations revealed that the five animals were stolen from a farmer in the area. Wright was then charged on July 23 with Larceny of Cattle.
