Florida man admits serving alligators for Super Bowl meal

A Florida man was arrested Sunday after admitting he caught and killed five small alligators and served them for Super Bowl dinner.

Richard Nixie cut off the gators’ tails to prepare the meal, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

The alligators were less than five feet in length, the Daytona News-Journal reports.

“No one should have possession of a Florida alligator unless they are a state nuisance-alligator trapper,” Greg Workman, a spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, told the paper.

Alligators are federally protected while their considered threatened. It is legal to hunt them, but only during harvest seasons and with a permit, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation website.

The 30-year-old was arrested three hours before the start of the big game at his home.

His prior arrest record included misdemeanor drug possession, felony weapon possession and armed burglary, the paper reports. He also served three years in prison for trafficking stolen property in Seminole County, Florida.

Brady sacked with ‘super’ tax

Tom Brady, Super Bowl MVP, New England Patriots

Tom Brady and the New England Patriots may have won Super Bowl XLIX, but the Internal Revenue Service is about to sack the MVP quarterback.

The four-time NFL champion owes a hefty tax bill after leading the Patriots to a 28-24 win over the Seattle Seahawks. Brady will be taxed for his Super Bowl winnings, as well as the Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck given to the game’s most valuable player.

For winning the Super Bowl, Brady’s taxes will exceed $62,164 based on rates compiled by Americans for Tax Reform.

The NFL pays Brady, 37, and his Patriots teammates a Super Bowl bonus of $97,000 each. Brady is subject to the top income tax rate of 39.6% plus the top Medicare tax of 3.8%, which is split with the NFL. That amounts to approximately $40,700 in additional income taxes for winning the Super Bowl.

SUMMARY

BRADY’S ‘SUPER’ TAX BILL

$97,000 Super Bowl Bonus

39.6% Top Income Tax Rate

3.8% Top Medicare Tax  (split with the NFL)

$40,700 Income Tax for Super Bowl Bonus

$21,464 Tax Bill for the MVP’s Chevy Truck

$62,164 TOTAL TAX BILL

Brady’s prize from General Motors (GM) also carries a big tax bill. The Colorado—the same truck made famous during the World Series for its “technology and stuff”—is a taxable price under section 74 of the Internal Revenue Code.

Taxes are levied on the fair market value of the Colorado. Americans for Tax Reform went with a conservative estimate of $34,000, according TrueCar (TRUE) data.

So Brady owes $13,464 in prize taxes, or 39.6% of the market value. But it doesn’t end there.

Brady has said he is giving the Colorado pickup to cornerback Malcolm Butler, who secured the Super Bowl victory with a last-minute interception near the goal line.

As a result, Brady owes a gift tax on the transaction. The tax code allows up to $14,000 in tax-free gifts, meaning the Colorado is a taxable gift of $20,000. At the top rate of 40%, Brady needs to pay another $8,000, bringing his total tax bill for the truck to $21,464.

Brady is also on the hook for Arizona’s “jock tax.” The Grand Canyon State, in addition to nearly every other state, taxes athletes for each day they spend within its borders.

The likely Hall of Famer recently restructured a contract with the Patriots that will pay a base salary of $27 million over the next three seasons.

Real Mona, Brown"s Town maintain lead in Super League

BY HURBUN WILLIAMS Observer writer

Sunday, January 04, 2015

Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Super League leaders Real Mona and Brown’s Town continue to plunder the opposition with convincing wins in rescheduled matches played yesterday.

At Butter Cup Park Real Mona hammered Rockfort 3-0 to move to nine points in Zone A, with Jordan Moses scoring all three goals. Meanwhile Brown’s Town continued their march to the top of Zone B with nine points from a comfortable 2-0 win against UWI.

In other matches Maxfield Park were held to a 1-1 draw by Rae Town at Maxfield Park, Mountain View and Shortwood played to a similar scoreline, while Allman Town edged Santos FC 1-0 at Bell Chung Oval to register their first win of the season.

Allman Town, who remain unbeaten in the Super League, having drawn their previous three games, moved to six points along with Santos in Zone B, with Bull Bay second on seven points.

Playing a high-pressed game from the opening whistle Allman Town forced the former joint leaders Santos into making several cardinal defensive blunders before Leslie Johnson spun and fired a rocket past goalkeeper Russell Hosang in the 33rd minute of play to keep their unbeaten record in tact from four matches.

However, the Nicholas Stewart-coached Allman Town had to withstand a resurgent second half from Santos to hold on to their narrow lead. Goalkeeper Jovell Plunkett made the victory possible by framing several spectacular saves from very close range.

Patriots crush Colts, reach sixth Super Bowl with Belichick and Brady - Seahawks stun Packers in OT after late comeback

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. –  Bill Belichick and Tom Brady are headed to a special place where no coach or player has gone more — the Super Bowl.

They earned their trip with the second most lopsided AFC championship victory ever.

The New England Patriots dominant duo earned a sixth trip to the Super Bowl with a 45-7 wipeout of the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC championship game before a raucous, rain-soaked crowd Sunday night.

The Patriots tied Dallas and Pittsburgh for most appearances in the big game with eight.

Scoring touchdowns on their first four second-half possessions, the Patriots (14-4) moved on to face defending champion Seattle (14-4) for the NFL title on Feb. 1 in Glendale, Arizona. Belichick will face Pete Carroll, whom he replaced as Patriots coach 2000. The Seahawks beat the Green Bay Packers 28-22 in overtime in the NFC title game.

In his first year as a starter, Brady led the Patriots to a Super Bowl win in the 2001 season, starting a run of three championships in four years. Now he and Belichick have a chance for their first in 10 years.

Brady threw three touchdown passes, LeGarrette Blount ran 30 times for 148 yards and three scores and the Patriots charged away after leading just 17-7 at halftime.

With his sixth Super Bowl berth, Brady surpassed John Elway for the most by a quarterback and tied defensive lineman Mike Lodish for most by any player. Belichick’s sixth visit tied him with Don Shula’s for most by a coach.

Brady completed 23 of 35 passes for 226 yards before being replaced by Jimmy Garoppolo with 3:20 left. Brady went to the sideline where he was embraced by Belichick. Moments earlier, while sitting on the bench, Brady was shown on the video board with soaked hair. He pumped his fist in the air 12 times then slapped hands with teammates.

The biggest blowout in AFC title history was Buffalo’s 51-3 win over the Los Angeles Raiders in the 1990 season.

For Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, it was the worst game of his three-year career and the fourth rout in his four career games against the Patriots, all by at least three touchdowns. He completed 12 of 33 passes for 126 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions.

He lost 43-22 in last season’s divisional playoff with Blount rushing for 166 yards and four touchdowns. And on Nov. 16, he lost 43-22 as Jonas Gray rushed for 201 yards and four touchdowns.

The Indianapolis defense was porous against the run again Sunday night. They weren’t much better against the pass.

And when Luck threw an interception that Darrelle Revis late in the third quarter, Blount ran 13 yards for the touchdown that made it 38-7.

One fan held up a sign: “No Luck In Our House”

But there was plenty of skill — and a touch of surprise — from the Patriots.

Eight days after baffling  Baltimore with a four-man offensive linemen formation that drew a loud protest from Ravens coach John Harbaugh in the Patriots 35-31 divisional win, Belichick called a pass to left tackle Nate Solder, who was eligible, that resulted in a 16-yard touchdown that made it 24-7 with just under five minutes gone in the third quarter.

The Patriots kept rolling with touchdowns on each of their next three series — a 5-yard pass from Brady to Rob Gronkowski, and Blount’s runs of 13 and 2 yards.

Sandals Whitehouse zoom in on Super League lead

BY PAUL A REID Observer writer

Tuesday, January 13, 2015

WHITEHOUSE, Westmoreland — Sandals Whitehouse could take over the lead in the Jamaica Football Federation Charley’s JB Rum Western Confederation Super League this afternoon with a win over Jericho Rangers at Whitehouse.

With Savannah SC dropping points for the first time this season after being held 1-1 by Village United at Elleston Wakeland on Sunday, a sixth-straight win would see Sandals Whitehouse take over the lead.

The odds will be in Sandals Whitehouse’s favour, especially playing at home against Jericho Rangers, who are in ninth place on five points.

An added time own goal on Sunday denied Village a big win over Savannah SC, who had won the previous five games, while Wadadah FC and Salt Marsh United moved into third and fourth places, respectively, with wins.

The game at Elleston Wakeland started just over an hour late due to the late arrival of officials, but it was the home team that took the lead when Charles Grant found himself with just goalkeeper Neil Williams to beat and found the lower right corner of the goal in the 31st minute.

Savannah SC, who had scored 17 goals in five games, stormed back but could not breach the Village United goal.

Savannah SC found an unlikely saviour in Village United’s Roneil Cole, who turned a ball past his own goalkeeper Keith Hamilton in time added on as the Westmoreland club managed to get a point instead of dropping all three.

Wadadah FC won back-to-back games with a 2-1 win over a slumping Tomorrow’s People at Irwin High with all three goals coming in a nine-minute period late in the second half.

Deshawn Woolery who transferred from Granville FC gave them the lead in the 75th minute and Tyshan Hill doubled the advantage in the 81st minute.

Dalkeith McPherson pulled one back for Tomorrow’s People in the 84th minute but that’s the best they could do as they went down to their third loss of the season and slipped to seventh place on nine points.

Salt Marsh United are in fourth place after Travis Watson’s 60th minute goal gave them a 1-0 win over Holland United in their Trelawny derby played at Davis Pen.

The win was promoted Salt Marsh United’s third of the season as they stretched their unbeaten run to five games and improved to 11 points.

Montego Bay Boys Club seemed to have picked up some momentum beating Beaches Negril 2-1 at the UDC field for their first back-to-back win of the season and moved to nine points.

Beaches Negril, who are still seeking their first win since earning promotion to the Super League took the lead in the 48th minute and Boys Club had to wait until the 78th minute to get the equaliser from Glenroy Williams with Roshane Reid scoring the winner in the 82nd minute.

Savannah, Sandals extend run in Western Confed Super League

BY PAUL A REID Observer writer

Thursday, January 01, 2015

NEGRIL, Westmoreland — Being forced to play during the festive holiday season did not stop the Savannah SC and Sandals Whitehouse teams from extending their brilliant starts in the Jamaica Football Federation Charley’s JB Rum Western Confederation Super League.

Former champions Savannah SC made it five straight with a 1-0 win over Beaches Negril while Sandals Whitehouse chalked up their fourth win in a row, holding off Violet Kickers 2-1 in Montego Bay, St James.

Savannah and Sandals Whitehouse will meet in what is expected to be a mouth-watering match-up on Sunday at Frome when one team will lose its perfect record.

It was not so festive for former champions Wadadah FC who were clobbered 1-5 by promoted Salt Marsh United, while Granville FC edged Montego Bay Boys Club 1-0.

Ron Daley scored his league-leading fifth goal, in the 61st minute for Savannah, while handing Beaches Negril their fourth straight loss.

At the Green Pond High field, Sandals Whitehouse dug deep to beat Violet Kickers 2-1 and stay three points adrift of Savannah.

Damion Wynter gave Sandals the lead in the 15th minute, but Ryan Binns levelled the scores for the home team in the 70th minute.

Ronnie Whyte scored the winner for Sandals in the 80th minute as they escaped with all three points.

Salt Marsh got a memorable win in their drubbing of Wadadah FC with Omar Williams leading the way with a treble, scoring in the 19th, 37th and 71st minutes.

Garrel Gooden scored in the 53rd minute and Errol Plummer in the 77th minute before Alex McFarlane got a consolation goal for Wadadah FC in the 82nd minute.

At the UDC field in Montego Bay, Andrew Allen’s 41st minute goal was enough to give Granville a 1-0 win over Montego Bay Boys Club and move past Wadadah FC into third place on goal difference.

Both teams are on nine points, one more than Tomorrow’s People, with Salt Marsh United improving to sixth place on seven points, one ahead of Village United.

"Super Bowl gaining traction locally"

BY SHAMILLE SCOTT Business reporter scotts@jamaicaobserver.com

Wednesday, February 05, 2014

IT’S not football as Jamaicans know it, but the Super Bowl of ‘American football’ is becoming an increasing attraction locally.

Patrons went out in droves at various sports bars and lounges last Sunday night to view the annual championship game of the National Football League (NFL) Super Bowl final — where the Seattle Seahawks blitzed the Denver Broncos with a 48 to three victory.

What’s more, local punters wagered millions of dollars on the outcome of the event.

Cuddy’z Sports Bar estimates that about 200 patrons watched the game at its New Kingston location on Sunday, while Usain Bolt ‘s Tracks and Records figures it had over 250 customers that night. New player, Ribbiz Ultra Lounge at the Acropolis Gaming Lounge, said the turnout was as projected.

Admittedly, persons don’t flock the sports bar to view the play offs but wait until the big game.

“It has a small but loyal following, but nothing major like some of the other sports such as football, basketball, track and boxing,” said Gary Matalon, CEO of the KLE Group that operates Tracks and Records. Matalon added that the excitement really starts closer to the Super Bowl.

Meanwhile, the general manager of Cuddy’z, Jeanelle Waddell, said that the popularity of the game is gaining traction, but the Super Bowl event is quite popular.

“Jamaicans love sports, it’s a natural fit, but it doesn’t compare to our tradional football (soccer),” she said.

Andrei Roper, senior marketing officer, sports betting at Supreme Ventures, figures that the reason the game has become popular is because of how close Jamaica is to the US.

“The NFL does a good job in marketing the Super Bowl, Jamaicans travel, and many of them go off to college and become accustomed to the game,” he said.

As for sports betting, JustBet reported that sales last Sunday were just under $1 million, while total JustBet wagers on the Super Bowl came in at almost $2 million.

Still, overall sports betting sales for the Super Bowl is much higher at well over US$100 million in the US, with estimated worldwide sales exceeding US$200 million.

Furthermore, a Jamaican-born right tackle, Orlando Franklin, 26, was a part of the Broncos team. Indeed, this along with the excitement about the game helped to pull Jamaicans in and make them interested.

“Let’s not forget that Americans, Irish and Canadians who love the game also live here, many of whom were at Ribbiz,” Roper said.

“Ribbiz has one of the best viewing experiences, with eight large televisions on every wall and the event was complemented with a drink-inclusive package for $3,000,” said Kamal Bankay, experience curator, Ribbiz.

Tracks and Records said that it sent out blast emails and had heavy social and traditional media campaigns leading up to the event.

“JustBet is pleased that we were able to offer bets on the day of the Super Bowl. It is critical to fans and punters who follow and research their sports closely, to be able to bet right up to just before the match,” said Roper, adding that this allows players to evaluate weather conditions, injury reports or any other factors that they believe may affect the outcome of the game.

The Super Bowl has set a record for the most-watched television event in US history, drawing the attention of 111.5 million viewers and has the potential for a worldwide audience of 1 billion.

February 2 was the first Sunday that sales of the JustBet sports betting product became available island-wide and the company expects to see more growth in Sunday betting sales, Supreme Ventures said.

“We at JustBet are confident that Sunday betting will facilitate even greater growth, given the number of NBA, Barclays Premier League and other European football leagues, international cricket and other events that are played on a Sunday, not to mention the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Brazil”, added Roper.

Action surges in Western Confederation Super League

PAUL A REID OBSERVER WRITER

Tuesday, January 28, 2014

PITFOUR, St James — Tomorrow’s People, last season’s mid-season champions and defending champions Wadadah FC will this afternoon seek wins that will bolster their hopes for a place in the mid-season final of the Jamaica Football Federation’s Captain’s Bakery and Grill/Charley’s JB Rum Western Confederation Super League.

Tomorrow’s People who have scored 17 goals from their last four games, all wins, are in fifth place on 17 points and are facing a tough Granville United team in Pitfour where a victory would give them second place on goal difference over Savannah SC.

Wadadah FC’s three-game winning streak was snapped by Granville United last Wednesday but they are still in the running for a mid-season place and have an easier task when they take on a slumping Montego Bay Boys Club at the UDC Field. The champions are on 15 points and don’t control their own destiny as far as the mid-season race is concerned.

The race was thrown wide open on Sunday after leaders Reno FC and then second placed Sandals Whitehouse both suffered 2-1 upset losses to Savannah SC and Holland United respectively.

Despite losing at Frome for the first time in two seasons, Reno FC still lead with 22 points, two more than Savannah SC, with Sandals Whitehouse-18, Tomorrow’s People-17 and Holland-16 points behind them.

Over the past two seasons Granville United and Tomorrow’s People have met three times in the regular season and both have won once with the other game ending in a 1-1 draw and another close contest is expected.

As they proved when they beat Wadadah FC 2-0 last week and earlier when they stopped Reno 3-2, Granville are not to be discounted and despite being out of the mid-season finals race are still a formidable opponent for any team on any given day.

Wadadah FC should bounce back from their loss against a Boys Club team still seeking their first win for 2014.

On Sunday, Savannah SC, champions two years ago, won back-to-back games for the second time with a big come-from-behind victory over Reno who were threatening to run away from the field.

Denmark Gillings scored his joint league leading ninth goal in the 12th minute to give Reno the lead but Shamar Bernard brought the ‘home’ team level in the 44th minute just before the half-time break before Shanar Cattan gave them all three points in the 79th minute.

Sandals Whitehouse’s five game win streak also came to a halt when Holland United came from back-to-back losses to win their fourth game of the campaign.

Sandals gifted the home team the lead in the 9th minute with an own goal and Romaine Lewis doubled the advantage in the 14th minute. Tristan Sommerville pulled one back for Sandals in the 65th but that was all they could muster on the day.
