Sandals Whitehouse look to extend unbeaten run

BY PAUL A REID Observer writer

Tuesday, January 20, 2015

FALMOUTH, Trelawny — Sandals Whitehouse will seek to extend their winning start to the Jamaica Football Federation Charley’s JB Rum Western Confederation Super League when they travel to face Holland United at Elleston Wakeland Centre today.

Sandals Whitehouse have won all six games played so far and lead with 18 points, two more than Savannah SC, who dropped points for the first time this season when they were held 1-1 at Village United in the previous round.

Wadadah FC are in third place on 12 points, one more than promoted Salt Marsh United, with Granville FC and Village United tied on 10 points each.

Savannah SC will be gunning to get back to winning ways when they travel to Granville Community Centre to face a team that has defied logic so far, scoring just three goals, winning three games by 1-0 margins, losing one by the same score, then drawing 0-0 in their last game against Tomorrow’s People.

The Savannah offence sputtered for the first time this season when they had to rely on a defender’s goal to get the point at Village. Prior to that they had scored 17 goals in five games.

Decades ago, a Wadadah FC vs Violet Kickers fixture would be national headliners, but both have fallen from their mid-1990s status and only a handful of diehard fans are expected at the UDC field today.

On form, Wadadah FC should prevail, but Violet Kickers, second to last in the table, have shown they can be lethal.

Salt Marsh United have shown they are not to be underrated and Tomorrow’s People could find out first-hand today when they meet at Irwin High.

Tomorrow’s People have played recent games without a number of top players who are reported to have changed clubs during the FIFA transfer window.

Montego Bay Boys Club will seek a third straight win when they travel to Watson Taylor Park in Lucea to face Jericho Rangers, while Beaches Negril, still seeking a win, will host Village United at Long Bay Beach Park.

Savannah, Sandals extend run in Western Confed Super League

BY PAUL A REID Observer writer

Thursday, January 01, 2015

NEGRIL, Westmoreland — Being forced to play during the festive holiday season did not stop the Savannah SC and Sandals Whitehouse teams from extending their brilliant starts in the Jamaica Football Federation Charley’s JB Rum Western Confederation Super League.

Former champions Savannah SC made it five straight with a 1-0 win over Beaches Negril while Sandals Whitehouse chalked up their fourth win in a row, holding off Violet Kickers 2-1 in Montego Bay, St James.

Savannah and Sandals Whitehouse will meet in what is expected to be a mouth-watering match-up on Sunday at Frome when one team will lose its perfect record.

It was not so festive for former champions Wadadah FC who were clobbered 1-5 by promoted Salt Marsh United, while Granville FC edged Montego Bay Boys Club 1-0.

Ron Daley scored his league-leading fifth goal, in the 61st minute for Savannah, while handing Beaches Negril their fourth straight loss.

At the Green Pond High field, Sandals Whitehouse dug deep to beat Violet Kickers 2-1 and stay three points adrift of Savannah.

Damion Wynter gave Sandals the lead in the 15th minute, but Ryan Binns levelled the scores for the home team in the 70th minute.

Ronnie Whyte scored the winner for Sandals in the 80th minute as they escaped with all three points.

Salt Marsh got a memorable win in their drubbing of Wadadah FC with Omar Williams leading the way with a treble, scoring in the 19th, 37th and 71st minutes.

Garrel Gooden scored in the 53rd minute and Errol Plummer in the 77th minute before Alex McFarlane got a consolation goal for Wadadah FC in the 82nd minute.

At the UDC field in Montego Bay, Andrew Allen’s 41st minute goal was enough to give Granville a 1-0 win over Montego Bay Boys Club and move past Wadadah FC into third place on goal difference.

Both teams are on nine points, one more than Tomorrow’s People, with Salt Marsh United improving to sixth place on seven points, one ahead of Village United.

Bashir seeks to extend 25-year rule

21 October 2014 Last updated at 14:57 Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir waves to the crowd as he attends for the inauguration of the White Nile Sugar factory near the Al-Dewaim city in the state of the White Nile on 11 July 2012 Omar al-Bashir first seized power in a coup in 1989 Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir will stand for re-election next year, an aide says, despite previous claims that he would quit after 25 years in power.

He was chosen ahead of four other candidates by the ruling National Congress Party’s (NCP) decision-making council, Ibrahim Ghandour said.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has indicted him for genocide in the Darfur region. He denies the charges.

Critics say Mr Bashir, 70, leads one of Africa’s most repressive regimes.

He seized power in a coup in 1989, and has won three elections since then.

Supporters of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir hold his pictures as they wait to greet him at Khartoum airport on 14 November 2012 Mr Bashir has a loyal following in Sudan’s ruling party

In 2011, NCP official Rabie Abdelati said he could “confirm, 100%” that Mr Bashir would not contest the 2015 election.

Opposition parties and analysts cast doubts on the statement at the time, saying it was probably aimed at diffusing an uprising similar to that seen against other long-serving Arab rulers in Africa.

Mr Ghandour, the NCP’s vice-president, said Mr Bashir won the party’s nomination with “266 out of 522″ votes at a meeting of its national convention, the AFP news agency reports.

The African Union (AU) has backed Mr Bashir in his rejection of The Hague-based court’s indictment.

It argues that as a serving head of state, he enjoys presidential immunity.

Sudan does not recognise the court.

Narine aims to extend wicket taking form to St Lucia in ODI series

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) — West Indies off spinner Sunil Narine, who recaptured his best form with a four wicket haul against Pakistan on Tuesday, is aiming to extend his wicket taking momentum to the third ODI which bowls off in St. Lucia tomorrow Friday July 19.Narine took four wickets for 26 runs off his 10 overs to floor the visitors and give the home side a crucial victory by 37 runs at the Guyana National Stadium. The 25-year-old spinner says he is unfazed by the pitch at the Beausejour Playing Field which is expected to play differently from the one at Providence where his exploits earned him man of the match.“We are now level and back in the series and we will look to move to St Lucia and win there as well,” said Narine.“The pitch there will be a bit different to what we have here in Guyana, but I believe I have the ability to bowl well there and get some more wickets”.Narine went wicketless off three overs when the West Indies lost  the opening ODI on Sunday, but he proved unstoppable on Tuesday as Pakistan were bowled out for 195 off 47.5 overs in reply to West Indies’ 232-8 off their 50 overs.“I just had to give it my all. I bowled a little quicker because, on this pitch, some balls were staying low and some were bouncing,” said Narine, who was voted ICC Emerging Player-of-the-Year last year and is presently Number 1 in the ICC ODI and T20 bowling rankings.“It was not an easy pitch for the batsmen to come after you and play their shot. Today was similar to what we saw on Sunday.”The two teams were due to travel to St Lucia on Wednesday for the remaining three ODI matches at the Beausejour Cricket Ground.Like our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/jamaicaobserverFollow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/JamaicaObserver
