St Catherine residents get medical help from US mission

Rasbert Turner, Star Writer

Scores of residents of Fraser’s Content and surrounding communities in St Catherine flocked the Church of God of Prophecy on Tuesday to receive treatment for various ailments.

The occasion saw members of the HELP JA Mission from the United States of America diagnosing and treating those who turned out.

According to Co-founder Dr Robert Clarke, the group is comprised of 30 doctors who dedicate themselves to give back to Jamaica.

“We were all born here (Jamaica) and have seen how persons have suffered ill-health and are not able to pay for treatment. We see it fit to give back, and have been for the last four years,” Dr Clarke said.

He told The Starthat Fraser’s Content was the fourth such stop and more than 400 persons have so far received medical attention.

Persons were given blood-sugar test, heart testing, HIV and eye testing, but the most cases, according to the doctor, are persons suffering from flu-like illnesses.

They were given various medications free of charge. Clarke said the mission will end on September 21.

“For years, I have had back problems, but it is with the help of these doctors that I know what is happening to me,” Melbourne Taffe, a patient said. Other persons were very thankful for the assistance given.

Sport

Sunday, August 25, 2013

A new champion will be crowned today in the Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum Masters T/20 Cricket Competition when undefeated St Catherine take on Domtar in the final to be played at Kensington Cricket Club in Kingston at 2:00 pm.St Catherine defeated last year’s winner MICO Masters in a low-scoring match last Sunday to maintain their unbeaten status and book their place in the final. The strength of the St Catherine team lies in its bowling department, which is spearheaded by Lascelles Davis, who is known as the ‘hat-trick bower’, having taken the only hat-trick in the competition to date. He should get good support from Leighton Brown, the team’s other productive bowler.Domtar, on the other hand, overpowered the formerly unbeaten May Pen Lions by 40 runs to get into the final against St Catherine. The third place play-off between MICO Masters and May Pen Lions will get under way at 10:00 am. MICO, on the other hand, want to maintain some pride, having already lost the competition. The winner will walk away with $75,000, the runners-up will get $50,000, while the third place team takes $30,000, and the fourth place team gets $15,000. There will be cash prizes for most runs, most wickets, best wicketkeeper, most catches by a player other than the wicketkeeper, as well as for the most disciplined team, bowlers taking five-wicket hauls, hat-tricks by any bowler, and century makers.

Health Tax proposed at St Catherine public consultation

KINGSTON, Jamaica  — St Catherine residents have recommended the implementation of a health tax, similar to the education tax, as means of generating revenue to finance the public health system, the Health Ministry reports.

The suggestion was among proposals coming out of a consultation on public health financing, held Tuesday (July 9), on the grounds of the Spanish Town Hospital. The consultation, the eighth in a series organised by the Ministry of Health, forms part of efforts by the Government to review the no user fees policy and examine options to finance the health sector. An increase in the levy on cigarette and tobacco companies, as well as a tax on “junk food” were also proposed at the St Catherine meeting. Participants also proposed that the elderly, the unemployed and persons under 18 years should be exempt from paying user fees at public health facilities. Health Minister Dr Fenton Ferguson, in welcoming the suggestions, stressed that whatever model of financing adopted for the health system, must be one that is not only sustainable, but also provides for a balance between access and quality care.“There is no point in saying we want to create access at the expense of quality,” Dr Ferguson said.Like our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/jamaicaobserverFollow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/JamaicaObserver
