Sterling lifts Rodgers as Liverpool make semis

Raheem Sterling eased the pressure on under-fire manager Brendan Rodgers as Liverpool swept into the League Cup semi-finals with a 3-1 win over Championship leaders Bournemouth on Wednesday.

Rodgers has endured stinging criticism in recent weeks after Liverpool dropped down the Premier League table and crashed out of the Champions League in the group stages.

A dismal 3-0 defeat at arch-rivals Manchester United on Sunday prompted Rodgers to admit Liverpool’s squad lacked the unity that almost carried them to the English title last season.

In the circumstances, an embarrassing defeat to second tier Bournemouth would have been a major blow to the beleaguered Rodgers’ hopes of holding on to his job, but he was able to leave Dean Court with his head held high as Sterling’s double sandwiched a Lazar Markovic strike in a one-sided quarter-final.

“I thought it was a brilliant performance. It was always going to be a difficult job, but we controlled the game. We thoroughly deserved it,” said Rodgers, whose side will face Chelsea in the two-legged semi-finals in January.

“Raheem Sterling has got some stick recently which I find extraordinary. He is a kid of 20 and he has been outstanding for us.

“It didn’t matter who we got in the draw, it was just important to get there – to win this competition you have to win games against big sides.”

Despite their recent struggles, Liverpool had won at Dean Court in the FA Cup last season and, after Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson missed a good chance early on, the visitors took control.

England forward Sterling opened the scoring with a glancing header from close range after Jordan Henderson nodded Markovic’s cross back across goal in the 20th minute.

Rodgers’ relief was clear to see as he celebrated Sterling’s first goal since September by vigorously punching the air on the touchline.

And, with the Reds cutting through the Bournemouth defence at will, Rodgers was on his feet again seven minutes later to salute Liverpool’s second goal.

Philippe Coutinho ignored Bournemouth’s appeals for offside as he cut inside to test Artur Boruc with a low shot and when the ball spun out to Markovic, the Serbia winger kept his cool to sidefoot home his first goal for Liverpool from the edge of the penalty area.

With Liverpool’s supporters making their support for Rodgers loud and clear, Sterling ran clear to net their side’s third goal in the 51st minute as he glided past Tommy Elphick before slotting home.

Former Everton midfielder Dan Gosling got one back for Bournemouth in the 57th minute when his tame shot trickled past a weak attempted save from Brad Jones.

In Wednesday’s other quarter-final, Tottenham thrashed Newcastle 4-0 at White Hart Lane as the Magpies suffered more north London misery.

Five days after a 4-1 beating at Arsenal, Alan Pardew’s side were on course for another heavy defeat from the 18th minute.

Jak Alnwick, a 21-year-old making just his third appearance in goal for Newcastle, made a hash of catching a corner and allowed the ball to slip out of his grasp to midfielder Nabil Bentaleb, who hooked home from four yards for his first Tottenham goal.

Newcastle conceded again 36 seconds into the second half when Nacer Chadli drove a perfectly-placed shot into the corner of Alnwick’s net.

Harry Kane put the result beyond doubt when the Tottenham striker scuffed his shot past Alnwick in the 65th minute and Spanish forward Roberto Soldado added the fourth five minutes later.

Tottenham’s reward was a semi-final tie against third tier Sheffield United, who enjoyed a shock 1-0 win over Southampton on Tuesday.

“We have respect for Sheffield United. They deserve to be in the semi-finals. We expect a tough game,” Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said.

Also on Tuesday, Premier League leaders Chelsea had advanced to the last four with a 3-1 win at Championship side Derby.

Burnley 0-1 Liverpool

by Pete OLIVER

Friday, December 26, 2014

Raheem Sterling scored the winner as Liverpool won 1-0 at Burnley on Friday to end a three-game winless run and keep their opponents in the Premier League relegation zone.

It was a far from convincing performance by Brendan Rodgers’s side and the outcome was tough on a Burnley team who lost at home for the first time in five outings.

But the result was all that mattered for Liverpool, whose position of 10th in the Premier League on Christmas Day was their lowest since 1992.

And it came thanks to Sterling, who, in the absence of the injured Daniel Sturridge and with the returning Mario Balotelli being trusted only with a place on the bench, is currently being asked to lead Liverpool’s attack.

The 20-year-old had not scored in the league since September, but his superbly taken sixth goal of the season, 17 minutes into the second half, at least edged Liverpool closer to the top-four place Rodgers believes they are still capable of securing.

The last time Liverpool had visited Turf Moor, in 2010, a facile 4-0 win confirmed Burnley’s relegation back to the Championship at the first time of asking.

But this time around, the Lancashire club look far better equipped to handle the top flight and in striker Danny Ings have a potential star in the making.

The England Under-21 international was instrumental in a dominant first-half performance by Sean Dyche’s side, as Liverpool were made to look nothing like a team heading back in the right direction.

The three-man defence preferred by Rodgers in recent games was badly exposed, particularly down Liverpool’s left side, where Mamadou Sakho and Lazar Markovic, who looked out of place as a wing-back, were targeted time and time again.

Liverpool also had to make an early change in goal, with Simon Mignolet, left out for the previous three games, replacing the injured Brad Jones after a quarter of an hour.

Moments earlier, Jones had been only a spectator as Ings shot against the foot of a post.

From virtually Mignolet’s first touch, the Belgium international allowed Ings to charge down his attempted clearance, which did little to help bring any calm to Rodgers’ jittery rearguard.

Burnley’s energy and clever use of the ball frequently had Liverpool on the back foot and Ashley Barnes and George Boyd both threatened with efforts that went over the top.

Liverpool had offered little at the other end, despite the darting runs of Sterling, and it should have been the home side who led at the break.

Scott Arfield went close when his goal-bound volley was diverted just wide following a corner via a vital toe from Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva.

Rodgers made a change at the start of the second half, but did not alter his formation, as midfielder Emre Can replaced Kolo Toure in the back three.

It did little to add any authority to Liverpool’s performance, but in Sterling they always have a potential match-winner.

The England international has not done his talent justice with sufficient goals this season, but when his side needed him to deliver, he duly did.

From Philippe Coutinho’s lofted pass, Sterling sprinted away, rounded goalkeeper Tom Heaton, and finished calmly from a diminishing angle.

Burnley must have feared such an outcome after not being able to score themselves.

Their last hope of any reward disappeared when on-loan Manchester United defender Michael Keane headed into the side-netting from a Kieran Trippier cross following another mistake by Mignolet.

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE ROUND-UP - Man City go second, Lallana sparks Liverpool

Saturday, October 04, 2014 | 2:10 PM

LONDON, England (AFP) – Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero scored late goals as Manchester City climbed to second place in the Premier League with a hard-earned 2-0 victory at Aston Villa on Saturday.

Villa offered dogged resistance, but Toure broke the deadlock with a characteristically languid strike in the 82nd minute and Aguero lashed home a second six minutes later.

Victory takes Manuel Pellegrini’s side to within two points of leaders Chelsea, who host Arsenal on Sunday.

“When we have just eight minutes to go you are a little worried, but I trusted that one of those chances would be scored because we have important players to do that,” Pellegrini told Sky Sports.

“It is very difficult to recover the points against a team like Chelsea and the only way to do it is to win every game.”

With Eliaquim Mangala back in the team, defending champions City bossed proceedings in the first half at Villa Park without ever truly exposing their hosts.

Aguero hit the post from James Milner’s pass early in the second period, but Villa quickly counter-attacked and City goalkeeper Joe Hart had to save from Kieran Richardson.

Belgian striker Christian Benteke made his return for Villa as a substitute after six months on the sidelines with a ruptured Achilles tendon, but it was City who dominated the closing stages.

David Silva prodded wide and Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan saved from Aguero, Mangala and Frank Lampard, before Toure made the breakthrough with a curling left-foot shot from the edge of the box.

Aguero made the points safe in the 88th minute, gathering a pass from Milner and crashing a shot inside the right-hand post.

Earlier, Adam Lallana opened his Liverpool account in style as his side claimed a first win in four league games by edging West Bromwich Albion 2-1.

Lallana put Liverpool ahead in the 45th minute at Anfield with his first goal since signing from Southampton.

After wriggling away from three defenders, the England midfielder poked the ball to Jordan Henderson, whose clever back-heel freed Lallana to arrow a left-foot drive into the bottom-right corner.

Saido Berahino equalised with a 56th-minute penalty after Dejan Lovren was penalised for a foul on the West Brom striker that appeared to take place just outside the area.

But five minutes later, Raheem Sterling teed up Henderson to score the decisive goal with a low, first-time shot past England colleague Ben Foster.

“It was very satisfying. We had to show big character today,” said Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, who awarded a first league start to Rickie Lambert in place of Mario Balotelli.

“I thought the resilience of the players was fantastic and we were helped by the crowd, because they realised the team needed a lift. It was a big win for us.”

Henderson’s strike enabled Liverpool to bounce back from their mid-week defeat by Basel in the Champions League and saw them provisionally climb to sixth place in the table.

Senegalese striker Papiss Cisse prevented Newcastle United from slipping to a third consecutive away defeat by scoring a brace as his side twice hit back to draw 2-2 at Swansea City.

Swansea midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson set up goals for Wilfried Bony and Wayne Routledge early in each half, but Cisse replied on each occasion to buy beleaguered Newcastle manager Alan Pardew some breathing space.

“It showed great spirit and character,” said Pardew, whose side remain without a league win.

“There’s always pressure when you’re behind in a game, but it’s my job to try and lift the players and make sure there’s fight in their belly.”

Recalled striker Steven Fletcher scored his first goals of 2014 as Sunderland belatedly registered their first win of the campaign with a 3-1 victory at home to Stoke City.

Connor Wickham’s fourth-minute header for Sunderland was cancelled out by Charlie Adam’s low strike in the 15th minute, but Fletcher struck either side of half-time to send Gus Poyet’s side up to 11th place.

Substitute Ross Wallace scored a dramatic 96th-minute free-kick to earn Burnley a 2-2 draw at fellow promoted side Leicester City.

Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez set up Jeffrey Schlupp to put Leicester ahead and then restored the hosts’ lead after Michael Kightly had equalised in the 39th minute, but Wallace curled home an equaliser deep into stoppage time.

Meanwhile, second-half goals by Mohamed Diame and Nikica Jelavic gave Hull City a 2-0 success at home to Crystal Palace.

In Sunday’s other games, third-place Southampton visit Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United host Everton and West Ham United tackle Queens Park Rangers.

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE ROUND-UP - Man City go second, Lallana sparks Liverpool

Monday, February 3, 2014

Arsenal beat Crystal Palace; Liverpool held

LONDON, England (AP) — In the Premier League’s top-four shuffle, it’s Arsenal leading the way again — for now.

After slipping from the summit during the week, the Gunners overcame struggling Crystal Palace 2-0 yesterday thanks to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s second-half brace.

Now the focus turns to today when Manchester City, who are two points behind Arsenal, host Chelsea, who are three points further back in third.

“I will watch that game with interest because it’s two competitors against us and it’s always interesting to see how they behave,” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. “We gained some points through some other opponents like Liverpool and Man United over this weekend, and I think we know that our results at the Emirates will be massively important until the end.”

Liverpool remained in fourth place, but their 1-1 draw at West Bromwich Albion was a missed opportunity to strengthen their pursuit of Champions League qualification.

Having led through Daniel Sturridge, Liverpool defender Kolo Toure sloppily gave the ball away to allow Victor Anichebe to equalise for West Brom.

Although Wenger still talks of United as a rival, an eighth loss of the title defence — at Stoke on Saturday — means the champions are seven points behind Liverpool.

And Arsenal are 15 points ahead of United in their quest for a first league title in a decade, after bouncing back from a hard-fought 2-2 draw at Southampton on Tuesday.

Despite dominating against Palace, Arsenal were frustrated throughout the first half in their pursuit of a goal against their relegation-threatened but well-organised London rivals.

The breakthrough came inside two minutes of the restart as Oxlade-Chamberlain scored his first Arsenal goal since December 2012 on his first league start since being injured on the opening day of this season in August.

Santi Cazorla weaved his way through the Palace defence and dinked the ball over for Oxlade-Chamberlain to lift the ball over goalkeeper Julian Speroni from close range.

And the 20-year-old England midfielder netted a second in the 73rd minute as he slotted seamlessly back into the injury-hit team.

Thomas Rosicky knocked the ball forward to Olivier Giroud, who backheeled it for Oxlade-Chamberlain to strike low into the net as Arsenal went a 10th game in all competitions unbeaten.

“It’s something I want to add to my game — more goals —so it was nice to get two today,” he said.

And this was a rare day when Luis Suarez couldn’t score for Liverpool, instead turning provider at the Hawthorns.

In a disjointed first-half display by his team, the Uruguay striker fed the ball to Sturridge at the far post to poke the ball into the West Brom net in the 24th minute.

But the winning position was thrown away in the 67th when Toure’s slack cross-field clearance went straight to Anichebe, who levelled with a low shot from a central position.

Wins for Arsenal, Liverpool in EPL

LONDON, England (AFP) — Lukas Podolski claimed a brace as Arsenal kicked their Premier League campaign into gear yesterday with a 3-1 win over Fulham at a sodden Craven Cottage.

Arsene Wenger’s side were beaten at home by Aston Villa on the season’s opening day, but they beat Fenerbahce 3-0 in midweek in the first leg of their Champions League play-off and carried that momentum into yesterday’s game.Heavy downpours in west London made for a saturated playing surface, but it did not stop Arsenal taking the lead in the 14th minute when Olivier Giroud gathered a low shot from Aaron Ramsey and stabbed the ball past Fulham goalkeeper David Stockdale.Podolski made it 2-0 four minutes before half-time when he side-footed home after Stockdale saved from Theo Walcott, and the Germany forward sealed victory in the 68th minute by gathering a pass from Santi Cazorla and arrowing a shot into the bottom-right corner.Darren Bent pulled one back for the hosts in the 77th minute, tapping in a low cross from Dimitar Berbatov to mark his debut with a goal following his loan move from Villa.“It’s never easy to play away or win away and we did it in a convincing way,” Arsenal manager Wenger told BT Sport.“We had a disappointing result against Villa and it was important to respond, and we’ve had two convincing wins, first against Fenerbahce and again today here.”In-form striker Daniel Sturridge scored his eighth goal in his last seven league games to give Liverpool a 1-0 victory over Villa at Villa Park. The England international had scored the only goal of the game in Liverpool’s opening 1-0 win over Stoke City and he repeated the trick with a neatly taken 21st-minute effort.Jose Enrique’s drilled pass from the left was dummied by Philippe Coutinho and Sturridge slipped between a pair of Villa defenders before rounding goalkeeper Brad Guzan and poking the ball into the roof of the net.Villa’s best chance of an equaliser fell to Christian Benteke late on, but the Belgian’s well-struck half-volley drew a fine full-length save from Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.“Second half, of course you expect a wee bit more pressure from them, and Simon made a couple of terrific saves. It was about the three points today and we got the three,” Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers told Sky Sports.“Since January we’ve been getting better and better. We’ll play better than we did today, but what’s important now is that the mentality in the group is to win, and win together.“It’s only the first couple of games, but we’ve shown a lot of really good signs and we just need to keep it going.”Elsewhere, Stoke came from behind to deny promoted Crystal Palace their first points of the season with a 2-1 win at the Britannia Stadium.Marouane Chamakh side-stepped Robert Huth to put Palace ahead in the 31st minute with his first league goal since September 2011, but two goals in four second-half minutes from Charlie Adam and Ryan Shawcross gave Stoke the points in manager Mark Hughes’s first home game.Hull City fared better than their fellow promoted side, with Robbie Brady’s 22nd-minute penalty enough to secure a 1-0 win at home to Norwich City, despite new signing Yannick Sagbo’s first-half red card for an off-the-ball tussle with Russell Martin. An 88th-minute goal from centre back Jose Fonte earned Southampton a 1-1 draw at home to Sunderland, who had taken a third-minute lead with a header from former Juventus midfielder Emanuele Giaccherini.Everton manager Roberto Martinez had to content himself with a 0-0 draw in his first competitive home game, as West Bromwich Albion claimed a point at Goodison Park in the absence of striker Nicolas Anelka, who is on compassionate leave following a personal bereavement.Newcastle United once again left Arsenal target Yohan Cabaye out of their squad as they were held to a 0-0 draw at home to West Ham United.Today, Manchester City visit Cardiff City and Tottenham Hotspur host Swansea City, before the first major head-to-head of the campaign on Monday, when Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea travel to champions Manchester United.Arsenal’s Lukas Podolski (left), shoots to score his second goal against Fulham during their English Premier League soccer match at Craven Cottage, London, yesterday.
