First loss of CPL 2014 for Tallawahs

The Jamaica Tallawahs went down by 13 runs to the Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel Saturday; this being their first defeat of the 2014 Limacol Caribbean Premier League.

The Red Steel first composed a formidable 183-5 in front of a sell out crowd at Queens Park Oval. The 22 year old Evin Lewis led with 72 while Kevin O’brien 32, darren Bravo 30 and captain Dwayne Bravo 24 made useful contributions.

Andre Russell 2-23 and Rusty Theron 2-34 were the pick of the Tallawahs’ bowlers.

Captain Chris Gayle then led the Tallawahs’ reply with a top-score of 60. However he was one of four wickets for man of the match O’Brien who also removed Jermaine Blackwood for 28, Adam Voges for 12 and Owais Shaw 2.

Despite a cameo of 40 off just 17 balls, from Russell, the Tallawahs still fell short.

Amazon Warriors

Meanwhile, despite a  century from Dwayne Smith, the Guyana Amazon warriors  still scored a close 7 run win over hosts Barbados tridents at the Kensington Oval in the day’s other match.

The Amazon Warriors first posted 173-5. Lendl Simmons, 62, and Martin Guptill, 55, shared in a 103 run opening partnership. Jeevan Mendis took 2-33.

Smith then scored an unbeaten 104 for the Tridents who appeared to be cruising to victory before they were restricted to 166-4. Smith’s knock included 8 fours and 6 sixes. Shoaib Malik also scored an unbeaten 50.

Jamaican Krishmar Santokie took 1-31 and Ransford Beaton 1-27 for the Amazon Warriors who were rebounding from Thursday’s last ball defeat to the Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel.

Sunday

The Red Steel will be in action again on Sunday against the Zouks while the Tallawahs head to Kingston for their final three preliminary matches.

CPL: Jamaica Tallawahs seal exciting win over Amazon Warriors

The Jamaica Tallawahs pulled off an exciting four-run victory over the Guyana Amazon Warriors on Sunday afternoon to remain unbeaten after three games in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

After setting the Amazon Warriors 149 to win, the Tallawahs stifled their opponents’ scoring rate and eventually restricted them to 144/2 off their allotted 20 overs, falling five runs short of the target.

Andre Russell was given the responsibility of holding the Amazon Warriors to less than the required eleven runs off the final over, and he managed that task with a superb display of calm under pressure, conceding just six runs off his six balls.

Jerome Taylor was the most expensive of the Tallawahs’ bowlers, conceding 42 runs from his four overs; however, he had an impact on the outcome, forcing Denesh Ramdin to retire with a delivery that hit him close to his left eye, and stopping a boundary with two balls left in the final over.

Chadwick Walton was declared Man of the Match for his top score of 53 runs for the Tallawahs.

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, Sunday July 13, 2014, CMC – Superstar Chris Gayle smashed a sensational, unbeaten hundred to propel title-holders Jamaica Tallawahs to a comfortable seven-wicket victory over St Lucia Zouks at the National Stadium here Saturday.

The powerful left-hander slammed 111 off just 63 deliveries – his first CPL hundred – as Tallawahs easily chased down their target off 162 off 19 overs, to send a strong signal to their competition at the start of the 2014 edition of the regional tournament.

Gayle, who has struggled with injury in recent months, showed no sign of discomfort as he blasted five fours and ten massive sixes, ripping into the hapless Zouks bowlers who had no answer to the onslaught.

He posted 32 for the opening wicket with fellow Jamaican Chadwick Walton who scored 23 from 12 balls before dominating a 64-run second wicket stand with Jermaine Blackwood who got just eight.

Gayle, playing at his destructive best, then posted another 55 runs for the third wicket with Australia’s Adam Voges who managed just 15.

His performance completely overshadowed a decent batting effort by the Zouks who rattled up 161 for five off their 20 overs, after winning the toss and choosing to bat.

South Africa’s Henry Davids top scored with 56 from 38 balls, striking five fours and two sixes while captain Darren Sammy finished on 29 not out from 22 balls with three boundaries.

Johnson Charles and Andre Fletcher both got 27.

Seamer Andre Russell took two for 27 from his three overs.

Tallawahs began their run chase on a high, with Walton blasting two fours and a six off the first over from medium pacer Mervin Matthew which cost 15 runs.

Gayle got going with a six over long-on off left-arm spinner Garey Mathurin in the third over which cost 13 runs but then lost Walton when the right-hander holed out to cover off Pakistani left-arm seamer Sohail Tanvir in the fourth over.

But Gayle continued his onslaught, smashing Matthew for two fours and a six in the sixth over which cost 17 runs, as Jamaica motored past 50.

He then ripped into South African left-arm spinner Roelof van der Merwe in the bowler’s first over, first clearing the ropes and long on before going straight for another six, in the ninth over of the innings that went for 15 runs. He raised his half-century off 30 balls with the second six.

Blackwood’s struggles ended when he holed out to long-on off off-spinner Shane Shillingford, after facing 18 balls for just eight, but Gayle sustained the tempo of the innings nicely, gathering 17 runs from medium pacer Sammy’s second over that cost 17 runs.

He inched his way through the 90s before reaching three figures off the first ball of the 19th over with a single to long-on off Matthew.

Gayle then finished the game with more fireworks, hammering Matthew through mid-wicket for four, pulling him over square leg for six, before punching a single to long-on to achieve victory.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad & Tobago (CMC) — The Jamaica Tallawahs have fixed an appointment with the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the final of the inaugural Caribbean Premier League T20 tournament here, slated for last night at the Queen’s Park Oval.

The Tallawahs on Friday night eliminated the Barbados Tridents by seven wickets, in the second semi-final, as big-hitting all-rounder Andre Russell and veteran Sri Lankan left-hander Kumar Sangakarra steered them home with nine balls to spare.Replying to the Tridents’ 148 off 20 overs, the Tallawahs romped to 152 for three (off 18.3 overs) with Russell not out 29, off just six balls, and Sangakarra unbeaten on 50 off 36 deliveries.With the Tallawahs needing 32 from 20 balls when he came to the crease, Russell crushed the ambitions of the Tridents in the 19th over with a thrilling display of shot-making, as he plundered three big sixes off former Pakistani all-rounder Azhar Mahmood.Bowling the last of his four overs, after earlier capturing the prized wicket of Chris Gayle (three runs) cheaply in the fourth over of the innings, Mahmood produced some fodder deliveries to the Jamaican all-rounder who fired them into the stands and secured the advance of the Tallawahs.Man-of-the-match Sangakarra, mixing aggression with clinical stroke play, guided the team in the difficult overs and also shared an important second-wicket partnership of 71 with opener Chadwick Walton, who benefitted from a dropped chance before he was off the mark and scored 45 off 40 balls.Walton, who was eventually run out by wicketkeeper Johnathan Carter, punished the Tridents for the early left-off and pulled around the game with the help of Sangakarra for Russell to launch his amazing blitz in the late overs.The Tridents, who struggled and recovered to post a competitive total in their innings, generally kept themselves in the game up until the 18th over, when the Tallawahs needed 15 from 12 balls, and up until Russell exploded.The Tridents were sent in to bat and were set back early, losing the wickets of opener Dwayne Smith and promoted all-rounder Jason Holder with just six runs and three overs into the innings.Young left-handed opener Ramon Reifer then joined with Shoaib Malik to put on 102 runs for the third wicket, off 14 overs, before both fell in successive balls in the 17th over. Reifer was run out for a well-played 36 off 43 balls, while Malik, seeking to hit Chris Gayle out of the ground, was caught at deep midwicket for 49 off 46 balls.From 108 for 3 — Mahmood (14), captain Keiron Pollard (13) and Kyle Mayers (12) added 40 runs off the last three overs to set up what was anticipated to be an interesting tussle for a place in the final.As it turned out, the Tallawahs made light work of the target and qualified to face the Warriors, who defeated them twice in the preliminary rounds.

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) — Another exhibition of power hitting by captain Chris Gayle and the consistent Andre Russell guided the Jamaica Tallawahs to a commanding seven wicket win over the Guyana Amazon Warriors that gave them the first hold of the Limacol Caribbean Premier League Saturday night. The pair smashed an unbeaten 62 from 34 balls as the Tallawahs rattled up 129 for three in 17.3 overs in reply to the Warriors’ 128 for five off 20 overs. Gayle finished unbeaten on 47 off 48 balls with six boundaries, while the belligerent Russell stroked 33 off 18 balls including five fours and one six.Earlier Chadwick Walton hit a six and one boundary in nine balls before going leg before wicket to Tillakaratne Dilshan for 13 and Kumar Sangakkara lofted Christopher Barnwell for James Franklin to run in and take a catch low down when the Sri Lankan was on 13.The only other Tallawah wicket to fall was that of Jermaine Blackwood for three. He was deceived by a slower delivery from Lasith Malinga whom he offered a tame return catch.Sent in to bat, the Guyana Amazon Warriors were choked in the front end of their innings languishing on 46 for two after 10 overs. They lost William Perkins caught at mid off by Danza Hyatt from a David Bernard Jnrd elivery for 14 and the prize wicket of Dilshan who played on to a sharp in swinger from Bernard Jnr without scoring.Lendl Simmons who started uncharacteristically slow top-scored with 40 off 44 balls with three fours and two sixes before holding out to Kumar Sangakkara trying to launch Nikita Miller over long off.  Simmons featured in a 50 run partnership with Denesh Ramdin who contributed 29 from 34 balls including two fours and one six.The Amazon Warriors innings got a much needed boost as James Franklin and Christopher Barnwell realized 20 runs in the final over bowled by Chris Gayle. Franklin was undefeated on 17. He faced nine balls and struck two sixes in the final over. PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) — Hollywood actor Gerard Butler has said his involvement with the Limacol Caribbean Premier League (CPL) is for the long-term after he arrived in Trinidad to watch the climax of the inaugural event.

Scottish-born Butler, whose list of movie credits includes 300, Reign of Fire and Olympus Has Fallen, has secured an equity stake in the Jamaica Tallawahs, confirmed his desire to remain involved as the tournament goes from strength to strength.“Absolutely (it is a long-term commitment),” he said. “I did not do this just to be in it for a couple of weeks. I did it because I hope this new league is a long-term league and that it keeps going and keeps building, so it is an investment you hope will build, but also (because) it is an excuse to come out here (to the Caribbean) to a place I love.”Butler is one of several high-profile names to become involved in the Limacol CPL with fellow actor Mark Wahlberg taking an equity stake in the Barbados Tridents, while Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group is involved with the Antigua Hawksbills, and is also a tournament sponsor.“A bit of rivalry (with Mark Wahlberg)?” said Butler. “Absolutely. At one point we were going to invest in the same team and then we thought it would be better to keep it separate – ‘You take Barbados and I will go with Jamaica.’“We have had a laugh about it and I am so glad he got involved in this as well and I think more will follow without it becoming ridiculous. I think Hollywood will take more of an interest in this and hopefully around the world.”The 43-year-old actor explained his involvement with the tournament began with a conversation with his friend Ajmal Khan, the Founder and Chairman of the Limacol CPL.“He (Ajmal) said there is a chance to create this whole new league, make it really exciting, bring in outside players and it will be the biggest party in sport because it is going to be in the Caribbean, (so he told me) ‘Think about it and you could get involved in that.’“I thought ‘You know what, for me it is all about things that enrich your life experience.’ I want to get involved in different things, so I thought how cool it would be.“And Jamaica, for me, I have visited there a lot, I have a special affection for that place and they have Chris Gayle, so I thought that would be the one to get involved with.”Butler attended Thursday night’s first semi-final between the Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel and the Guyana Amazon Warriors, a match won by the Warriors by seven wickets, and he said he could see immediately why the tournament has taken off to such a great extent.“I see the excitement,” he said. “I ask people ‘What was it like before?’ and they say ‘It was always fun, but now it is a really fun.’ It is much bigger, it is more exciting, it is just more. It feels like it is becoming the European Champions League of the Caribbean.“I went to the (Red Steel – Amazon Warriors) game and it was a carnival atmosphere… among the people there was a lot of competition, but it was a lot of fun and everyone was having a good time.”During his stay in Trinidad Butler has taken the opportunity to meet the Jamaica Tallawahs players and staff and was impressed with what he found.“There are a lot of personalities in there, but they are very warm and humble and a lot of strong and good players. I am excited and I really feel like I got behind the right team.”Having made a movie about football, based on the true story of the United States of America team that beat England in 1950, is there scope for a movie about cricket and would he like to be involved?“Absolutely, I think it would be great to make a cricket movie as you could come at it from many angles, whether it be the sport angle, the dramatic part of that, or somebody from another place that should not be where he is.”“There are a lot of ideas you could put into a great cricket movie. Jamaica Tallawahs, powered by spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, confirmed their spot in the semi-finals of the Limacol Caribbean Premier League (LCPL) Twenty20 after a six-wicket win over Barbados Tridents at Sabina Park in Kingston yesterday.

The Tallawahs join the Tridents and the Guyana Amazon Warriors as teams to progress to the semis.Scores: Barbados Tridents 113-4 (20 overs); Jamaica Tallawahs 114-4 (18.1 overs).The Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel provisionally pulled into the crucial fourth place — ahead of the Antigua Hawksbills — after a six-wicket win over the St Lucia Zouks in the first game of the double-header at the venue.Scores: St Lucia Zouks 99-5 (20 overs); Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel 105-4 (17.5 overs).In the afternoon feature, the Tridents lost the toss and were sent in to bat first, but could only manage 113-4 on a difficult batting surface that was described as “slow and low” by Tallawahs left-arm orthodox slow bowler Nikita Miller.Opener Dwayne Smith batted through the innings and ended unbeaten on 52 from 53 balls.Smith’s mostly circumspect knock was highlighted by a hoisted shot which flew over deep square leg and onto South Camp Road off seamer Vernon Philander’s full toss.Man-of-the-match Muralitharan, the retired Sri Lankan off-spinning great, grabbed 3-12 off four overs.Buoyed by a vibrant, party-like atmosphere and at least a 90-95 per cent capacity stadium, the home team weathered the loss of early wickets, including those of top Twenty20 batsman Christopher Gayle (five), to reach 114-4 with 11 balls remaining.Andre Russell and rookie Jermaine Blackwood were the batting heroes with undefeated knocks of 27 and 21, respectively.The pair combined to thump 13 runs off the 15th over bowled by medium pacer Rayad Emrit and took a further 11 in the next over delivered by left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan to shape the victory for the Tallawahs.Their unbroken fifth wicket partnership of 49 runs came off a mere 36 deliveries.In the curtain-raiser, the Zouks opener Andre Fletcher top-scored with a 59-ball 46 not out in the total of 99-5. GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) — An unbeaten fourth wicket stand of 69 between Andre Russell and Danza Hyatt steered Jamaica Tallawahs to a seven wicket victory over Antigua Hawksbills in their Caribbean Premier League (CPL) match at the Providence Stadium Sunday.Russell powered his way to 42 not out off 23 balls with four fours and three sixes while Hyatt made 25 not out, as the Tallawahs, needing 118 for victory reached 120 for three off 16 overs and five balls. Russell brought up victory with a six off the orthodox left arm spinner Dave Mohammed.Tallawahs had previously lost Ahmed Shehzad, caught by Justin Kemp off Kemar Roach for one, lobbing to mid on while attempting to beat mid-wicket. Nkrumah Bonner was bowled by Marlon Samuels for 21. They also lost a subdued Chris Gayle caught and bowled by Rahkeem Cornwall for 11.The Hawksbills, who won the toss and batted, struggled throughout their innings. Opener Kieran Powell was the only batsman to score freely but when he was the fifth wicket to fall Hawksbill were 88 for five in 14.3 overs.He lost opening partner Johnson Charles who cut powerfully to Ahmed Shezhad off Vernon Philander for nine. Ricky Ponting looked to get on top of the bowling but held out to Ahmed Shehzad off the bowling of Gayle for 19.Muttiah Muralitharan struck two crucial blows in one over, sending back Marlon Samuels and Devon Thomas both leg before for eight and two runs respectively, Hawlksbills losing wickets at 3-74 and 4-76.Player of the match Vernon Philander then sent back Rahkeem Cornwall leg before for nine and induced Justin Kemp (19) into a false shot. Kemp’s attempt to launch a low full toss found an outside edge leaving Gayle to complete a simple catch.Philander ended with three for 16, Muralitharan two for 18 and Gayle, two for 22.
