Taurus Riley, Alia Atkinson patrons for Sagicor Sigma Corporate 5k run

KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Sagicor-sponsored Sigma Corporate 5k run was officially launched Wednesday at a press conference in Kingston.

The run, which will take place on Sunday, February 22, will this year have as its patrons noted reggae singer Taurus Riley and joint world record holder for the 100 metres short course breaststroke, Alia Atkinson.

The Sigma Corporate 5k run is open to runners, walkers and persons using wheelchairs.

The Jamaica Observer is the print media partner for the run.

Veteran reggae, lovers-rock singer Jimmy Riley, who is also the father of Tarrus Riley, is terribly ill and remains hospitalised three weeks after being admitted for an undisclosed illness after contracting chik-V.

THE STAR understands that there is no clear indication when the elder Riley is scheduled to be released from hospital as his current state is said to require regular monitoring by doctors.

Riley’s latest studio album, Contradictions, was released in September 2013 by VP Records and features son Tarrus, Sizzla and Fanton Mojah.

Efforts by THE STAR to speak to a member of the family proved futile.

It is unclear who currently manages the elder Riley, who, up to a few months ago, was still actively touring and performing at gigs locally and internationally.

Jimmy Riley had several hits in the 1970s, including Tell the Youths the Truth, Nyah Bingi, and Clean Up the Streets.

His musical success continued in the 1980s while working with Sly & Robbie’s Taxi productions.

In 1983, Riley topped the UK reggae chart with his version of Marvin Gaye’s Sexual Healing.

Andrew Riley wins as Jamaican hurdlers continue good form

Two time Olympian Andrew Riley was a winner at an international athletics meeting in Hungary on Tuesday.

Riley sped to 13.49 seconds to win the men’s sprint hurdles.

Simone Facey was the next best placed Jamaican clocking 11.41 secs for 2nd in the women’s 100 meters behind American Tianna Bartoletta 11.35 secs. Schillionie Calvert was 3rd in 11.51.

Michael Frater 10.60 was 6th in the men’s 100 meters which was won by Kim Collins of St Kitts & Nevis in 10.31.

Shericka Williams, the 2008 Olympic silver medalist was 3rd in the women’s 400 meters after clocking 52.44 behind Nigerian winner Regina George 52.11.

THE 2013 Moscow IAAF World Athletics Championships is less than four days away and all but two of the country’s athletes have already settled in the Russian capital.Sprint hurdlers Dwight Thomas — and Andrew Riley are scheduled to arrive today. National 100m champion Kerron Stewart was the latest to arrive yesterday.Dennis Gordon, the team’s media liaison officer, told the Jamaica Observer last evening. “The team has settled in well. We trained this morning and again in the evening.”Meanwhile, Jamaican athletes are enjoying the cool weather of Moscow, as last night’s temperature was 25 degrees Celsius.According to the weather forecast, today will be partly cloudy early, to be followed by mostly cloudy skies and a few showers later in the day. There will be a high temperature of around 23 degrees Celsius.
