Pope leaves Manila after drawing record crowd of 6M

MANILA, Philippines –  Pope Francis flew out of this Catholic bastion in Asia on Monday after a weeklong trip that included a visit to Sri Lanka and drew what Filipino officials says was a record crowd of 6 million faithful in a Manila park where he celebrated Mass.

President Benigno Aquino III, church leaders and 400 street children yelling “Pope Francis we love you,” saw him off at a Manila air base, where the pontiff, carrying a black travel bag, boarded a Philippine Airlines plane for a flight to Rome. Standing at the top of the stairs, the pope waved to the crowd, slightly bowed his head, then walked into the plane.

Hundreds of thousands of Filipinos lined Manila’s streets, with police keeping a close watch, to have their final glimpse of Francis, who smiled and waved aboard an open-sided, white popemobile.

“He’s my No. 1 world leader,” said Rita Fernandez, a 63-year-old mother of four, who stood on a street near the Apostolic Nunciature in Manila where Francis stayed during his four-day visit.

“He rides on a bus. He flew to Tacloban to visit the typhoon survivors despite the storm and he stops to talk to the poor. He’s a living saint,” said Fernandez, who held a cellphone with a camera and wore a yellow shirt showing a smiling Francis.

A crowd estimated at a record 6 million people by officials poured into Manila’s rain-soaked streets and its biggest park Sunday as Pope Francis ended his Asian pilgrimage with an appeal for Filipinos to protect their young from sin and vice so they can become missionaries of the faith.

The crowd estimate, which could not be independently verified, included people who attended the pope’s final Mass in Rizal Park and surrounding areas, and lined his motorcade route, said the chairman of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, Francis Tolentino.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said the Vatican had received the figure officially from local authorities and that it was a record, surpassing the 5 million who turned out for St. John Paul II’s final Mass in the same park in 1995.

Francis dedicated the final homily of his Asia trip to children, given that the Mass fell on an important feast day honoring the infant Jesus. His focus was a reflection of the importance that the Vatican places on Asia as the future of the church since it’s one of the few places where Catholic numbers are growing — and on the Philippines as the largest Catholic nation in the region.

“We need to see each child as a gift to be welcomed, cherished and protected,” Francis said. “And we need to care for our young people, not allowing them to be robbed of hope and condemned to a life on the streets.”

Francis made a triumphant entry into Rizal Park, riding on a popemobile based on the design of a jeepney, the modified U.S. Army World War II jeep that is a common means of public transport here. He wore the same cheap, plastic yellow rain poncho handed out to the masses during his visit to the typhoon-hit eastern city of Tacloban a day earlier.

The crowd — a sea of humanity in colorful rain ponchos spread out across the 60 hectares (148 acres) of parkland and boulevards surrounding it — erupted in shrieks of joy when he drove by, a reflection of the incredible resonance Francis’ message about caring for society’s most marginal has had in a country where about a quarter of its 100 million people lives in poverty.

Francis dedicated his four-day trip to the Philippines to the poor and marginal. He denounced the corruption that has robbed them of a dignified life, visited with street children and traveled to Tacloban to offer prayers for survivors of Typhoon Haiyan, the deadly 2013 storm that devastated one of the Philippines’ poorest regions.

Earlier Sunday, Francis drew a huge crowd to Manila’s Catholic university, where he came close to tears himself hearing two rescued street children speak of their lives growing up poor and abandoned.

The pope ditched his prepared remarks and spoke off the cuff in his native Spanish to respond to 12-year-old Glyzelle Palomar, who wept as she asked Francis why children suffer so much. Palomar, a former street child rescued by a church-run foundation, told him of children who are abandoned or neglected by their parents and end up on the streets using drugs or in prostitution.

“Why is God allowing something like this to happen, even to innocent children?” Palomar asked through tears. “And why are there so few who are helping us?”

A visibly moved Francis said he had no answer. “Only when we are able to cry are we able to come close to responding to your question,” he said.

“Those on the margins cry. Those who have fallen by the wayside cry. Those who are discarded cry,” the pope said. “But those who are living a life that is more or less without need, we don’t know how to cry.”

And he added: “There are some realities that you can only see through eyes that have been cleansed by tears.”

Did "Sniper" break record?

bradley cooper aims in american sniper ap.jpg Kyle Gallner, left, and Bradley Cooper appear in a scene from “American Sniper.” (The Associated Press)

“American Sniper” hit the bullseye, earning an astonishing $90.2 million in its debut weekend.

It is now on pace to decimate records for the Martin Luther King holiday and for the month of January, pulling in roughly $105 million over the four-day period. It’s also a new high-water mark for director Clint Eastwood, whose previous weekend record was the $29.5 million wide-release opening for 2008’s “Gran Torino.” At 84, he’s still got it.

“The movie has become a cultural phenomenon,” said Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. head of domestic distribution. “It tore apart the record book and not by a little. By an enormous amount.”

“American Sniper,” recently picked up Oscar nods for Best Picture and Best Actor for star Bradley Cooper, and the awards buzz only intensified interest in the film. The war drama was co-produced and co-financed by Village Roadshow for less than $60 million.

“American Sniper” wasn’t the only record-breaker. Sony and Screen Gems’ “The Wedding Ringer,” starring Kevin Hart as a best man for hire, is looking to be the number one R-rated comedy opening for the month of January. The film will earned $21 million for the weekend and should pick up $25 million for the four-day holiday. Those numbers are good news for a film that cost $23 million to produce. It also keeps Hart’s box office roll going following his success in recent hits such as “Ride Along” and “Think Like a Man.”

“Kevin Hart really is that guy that everybody wants to hang with,” said Rory Bruer, Sony Pictures president of worldwide distribution. “Not only is he always funny, but he’s that guy that you want to sit down and have a beer with. He exudes charisma.”

The Weinstein Co.’s “Paddington” opened to $19.3 million from 3,303 screens for the weekend and a third-place finish. By Monday, however, it could supplant “The Wedding Ringer” as the holiday’s second highest grossing film as it is also expected to earn roughly $25 million over the four-day period. The Weinstein Company picked up U.S. distribution rights from StudioCanal, which financed the $55 million adaptation of Michael Bond’s beloved series about a talking bear with a penchant for marmalade sandwiches.

“American Sniper’s” success was bad news for the weekend’s other adult drama, “Blackhat.” Michael Mann’s look at the way we hack now flopped, earning a doleful $4 million from 2,567 locations for the weekend and should make $4.6 million over the holiday. That’s a dreadful result for the $70 million production and the worst of Mann’s career. It’s lower even than the modest $10 million the studio projected “Blackhat” would pull in over the four-day period. Legendary Pictures backed the film, with Universal distributing.

The top five was rounded out by holdovers, “Taken 3? and “Selma.” Liam Neeson’s latest vigilante flick fell sharply in its sophomore frame, dropping more than 60% to earn $14 million over the weekend and bringing its total to $62.8 million.

Despite being snubbed in several major Oscar categories, Paramount Pictures’ “Selma” seemed to capitalize on the Martin Luther King holiday, earning $8.3 million. It should earn $10.3 million over the four-day period. The Civil Rights drama has made nearly $28 million since premiering in limited release on Christmas.

Reus fined record Eur540,000

BERLIN, Germany (AFP) — German international Marco Reus has been slapped with a record EUR540,000 ($665,000) fine for driving without a licence, the daily Bild reported yesterday.

“Today I know it: I was much too naive in this situation, it was a stupidity I have learned from,” said the 25-year-old.

“I’ve learned my lesson it will never happen again.”

According to Bild, the fine is a record in Germany for such an offence.

The Borussia Dortmund player, who is currently out with a right ankle injury, was stopped by police on March 18 behind the wheel of a luxury car as he returned from training.

He failed to present his licence to police who later discovered that he did not possess one and he had been stopped five times previously between September 2011 and March 2014.

Each time Reus picked up a fine without anyone checking his licence.

The fine was calculated in proportion to his revenue which the court estimated at 180,000 euros ($221,000) a month.

Reus has only played 11 games this season but is expected to return from injury in January.

Obama making record use of presidential memos - Fed judge: Obama immigration actions "unconstitutional"

President Obama reportedly is using a unique form of executive action known as the “presidential memorandum” at a historic pace – a tactic that allows him to, technically, claim he’s not over-using executive orders while still pursuing high-level policy changes without involvement from Congress.

A review by USA Today, published Wednesday, shows that, in fact, Obama has issued more memoranda than any U.S. president in history. He’s issued 198 – more than the 195 executive orders from his White House.

The executive action is strikingly similar to an executive order, with only slight differences. But by using the memos, this is how Obama and his advisers have claimed the president is not over-using executive orders.

According to USA Today, when the memos and executive orders are combined, Obama is on pace to issue more “high-level executive actions” than any president since Harry Truman.

As noted in the review, Obama’s most controversial executive action of late – an overhaul of the U.S. immigration system including de facto legal status for up to 5 million illegal immigrants – was done through memoranda.

Those actions already have led to legal challenges – and one judicial rebuke. On Tuesday, U.S. District Court Judge Arthur Schwab, in Pennsylvania, issued an opinion claiming some of Obama’s actions were unconstitutional.

The opinion, though, was delivered in a case not directly related to those actions, and the Justice Department downplayed Schwab’s opinion as “unfounded” and “flatly wrong.”

According to the USA Today review, Obama has used memoranda to take a number of other actions, including directing the Labor Department to collect salary data from federal contractors to see what they’re paying women and minorities, and directing federal law enforcement agencies to trace firearms that are part of federal probes.

The differences between an order and a memorandum are slight. According to the USA Today review, executive orders are numbered and memoranda are not. Executive orders have to cite the law they’re based on, and memoranda do not. Both actions can be used for similar purposes, though.

Audi claims self-drive speed record

21 October 2014 Last updated at 13:29 By Leo Kelion Technology desk editor WATCH: The RS7 took a little over two minutes to complete a lap (video filmed by Audi and edited by BBC)

Audi has claimed a speed record for a self-driving car.

The German car giant says its RS7 vehicle topped 149mph (240km/h) while driving uncrewed round the Hockenheim racing circuit, south of Frankfurt.

The car took just over two minutes to complete a lap of the Grand Prix track.

Sunday’s stunt was organised to highlight the firm’s efforts to bring “piloted driving” to road vehicles. But one expert cautioned that several hurdles still needed to be overcome.

Audi – a division of Volkswagen – also put a human behind the wheel of the vehicle for a comparison lap. He took five seconds longer to complete the circuit.

A member of the car company’s research team explained that it believed the innovation could ultimately be used by the public.

“I know accident-free driving will remain a vision. But at least we can reduce the number of accidents in the future,” said Dr Horst Glaser.

“Piloted driving defuses situations like, for example, being in a traffic jam. Whenever the driver is distracted and inattentive the car could take over.

“Additionally the driver has a chance to relax. That means they are on full alert as soon as their attention is required again.”

Audi RS7 Computer equipment in the rear of the car used data gathered from an array of sensors

The RS7 used a combination of cameras, laser scanners, GPS location data, radio transmissions and radar sensors to guide itself around the track, with the data processed by computing equipment that filled its boot.

The experiment marked a high point after 15 years of research by the firm in the US and Europe.

However, one industry-watcher noted that a speed test on an otherwise empty racetrack was very different to the day-to-day driving conditions such vehicles would one day experience.

“I think we will see driverless cars on our roads within a decade, but there’s clearly still a lot of work to do,” said Prof David Bailey from Aston Business School.

“You need to make sure they interact with other driverless cars as well as those piloted by humans – you’ve got to make sure the software absolutely works.”

He added that the insurance industry also needed to grapple with the concept.

“One of the big issues is what happens if there is an accident,” he explained.

“Who is responsible? Is it the driver even if they are not driving? Is it the car company? Is it the software company? There are a whole load of legal issues to sort out.

Mercedes Mercedes is developing a computer-driven version of its S-class car

“But there could be big savings for the economy in terms of far fewer accidents and more efficient travel.”

Audi is far from alone in this field research.

Another German manufacturer, Mercedes, showed off a rival computer-controlled version of its S-class car recently.

Other car companies including Daimler, Volvo, Toyota, Tesla and BMW are also experimenting with artificial intelligence-directed vehicles, as are other tech firms including Google, Panasonic and Autolive.

Experts call for international action as greenhouse gas levels hit record high

greenhouse-gases-740GENEVA, Switzerland, Friday September 12, 2014 – A surge in the level of carbon dioxide drove greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere to a record high last year, a recent study claims.

Scientists say carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations grew at the fastest year-to-year rate since reliable global records began in 1984 and have called for international action to combat climate change.

The volume of carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas emitted by human activities, was 396 parts per million (ppm) in 2013 – a 2.9 ppm increase over 2012.

The second most important greenhouse gas, methane, reached a global average of 1824 parts per billion (ppb), increasing at a similar rate as the last five years, while nitrous oxide, the other principal contributor, reached 325.9 ppb, growing at a rate comparable to the average over the past decade.

According to the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), greenhouse gas emissions are rising mainly due to industrial growth in China, India and other emerging economy nations.

The rise in CO2 levels is now outpacing fossil fuel use, moreover, which suggests that the planet’s natural ability to absorb emissions of the gas may be slowing.

The biosphere, which includes plants, soil, and the oceans, absorbs around a quarter of man-made CO2 emissions.

If the absorption level drops, more of the planet-warming gas will stay in the atmosphere, where it can remain for centuries.

“We know without any doubt that our climate is changing and our weather is becoming more extreme due to human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels,” WMO Secretary General Michel Jarraud told a news conference.

“It may be due to the reduced uptake of CO2 by the biosphere. If that is confirmed, it is of significant concern.”

WMO experts noted that the ocean is getting rapidly more acidic, impairing its ability to absorb carbon dioxide and the rate of ocean acidification is unprecedented at least over the past 300 million years.

According to WMO scientific officer Oksana Tarasova: “The total change of ocean acidity since pre-industrial (times) is 25 percent, and six percent was done within the last 10 years.”

The longer fossil fuel use grows, the harder it will be to reverse the warming effect, so even if human-made carbon emissions fall by 80 percent by 2050, the total warming effect of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere will have barely receded by 2100 the WMO said.

As Jarraud explained: “Past, present and future CO2 emissions will have a cumulative impact on both global warming and ocean acidification. The laws of physics are non-negotiable. We are running out of time.”
Representatives of about 200 governments will meet at a summit in Paris next year to work out a deal to limit global warming.

The aim is to keep global warming within 2°C above pre-industrial times, a goal that was set by the UN in 2010.

If this could be achieved, it would “give our planet a chance and our children and grandchildren a future,” said Jarraud.

Parchment smashes own National Sprint hurdles record

By Ricardo Chambers

Hansle Parchment joined an elite club of 16 men to have broken the 13 second barrier, when he set a Jamaican record to win the 110 meter high hurdles at the IAAF Diamond League meet in Paris on Saturday. The meet was shown LIVE as usual on Television Jamaica.

The 24 year old Parchment sped to 12.94 seconds, making him the tenth fastest man in history over the distance while improving on his previous national record of 13.05 secs.

In the process, he handily defeated the inform Frenchman Pascal Martinot Lagarde who logged a personal best 13.05.

The former Morant Bay High and Kingston College athlete was the only Jamaican winner at the meet.

Stephanie Ann McPherson was the next best placed Jamaican at the event.

She produced a late surge to place second in the women’s 400 meters in a season’s best 50.40 seconds. Olympic champion Sanya Richards-Ross, who is Jamaican born,  continued her return to form by winning in 50.10 secs as Diamond race leader, National Champion Novlene Williams-Mills ended third in 50.68.

Meanwhile, world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce found the going tough on her return over 200 meters. She finished 5th in 22.63 with Simone Facey 6th in 22.75. Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare won in 22.32.

Nesta Carter 10.12 and Kemar Bailey-Cole 10.14 were 4th and 5th in the men’s 100 meters won by American Michael Rodgers in 10 seconds flat.

The event was marred by controversy, when national champion Nickel Ashmeade protested a false start and refused to leave the track for several minutes.

"Record fall" in car insurance costs

27 July 2013 Last updated at 06:34 ET Cars ‘No-win, no-fee’ cases are now more expensive to pursue The cost of car insurance is falling at a record rate in the UK, according to the insurance arm of the AA.

The average annual comprehensive car insurance quote fell to £594.84 this month, it said, down 9.8% from £659.53 last July – the biggest decrease since the AA insurance index began in 1994.

It said the dip was thanks, in part, to clampdowns on fraud and restrictions on claims management companies.

Despite the fall, premiums remain much higher than they were six years ago.

Third party, fire and theft quotes also fell between July 2012 and this month – down 4.8% to £820.58 on average, AA Insurance’s research suggested.

BBC business correspondent Joe Lynam said the 9.8% fall in comprehensive cover quotes follows a 6.4% fall over the course of 2012 – itself a record.

But he adds that the cost of insuring the average car is still twice as much as it was in 2007.

Gender equality

At the start of April, a ban on referral fees was introduced.

Insurance premiums are far higher than they were in 2007

They were paid by lawyers and claims management firms to breakdown firms, brokers and the insurers themselves, in exchange for providing information about accident victims.

Also, anyone suing for accident damages with the help of a no-win, no-fee lawyer – known as a conditional fee arrangement – now has to pay their lawyer’s success fee from their own funds if they win their case.

It was previously added to the bill of the losing party.

This has made claims more expensive to pursue.

And new gender equality laws have lowered premiums of men by far more than expected while women’s premiums have remained static, according to AA Insurance’s research.

Fraudulent claims – especially for whiplash which is often difficult to disprove – are also down.

AA Insurance director Simon Douglas said insurers previously faced “a fast-widening gap between premium income and claims costs – largely driven by whiplash injury claims and fraud, which saw very sharp premium increases between 2009 and 2011″.

“That gap is closing and premiums are falling again thanks to competition, as well as improved fraud detection by the insurance industry and tightening of the law that is beginning to curb the number of spurious new whiplash injury claims,” he said.

‘Treated unfairly’

“The news that hundreds of rogue ‘no-win no-fee’ claims firms have been reined in is welcome and, in part, falling insurance premiums reflect that.”

Graeme Trudgill of the British Insurance Brokers’ Association said uninsured driving costs the industry £500m, whiplash claims £2bn and fraud £1bn.

But these costs were now coming down, he added, because of a concerted effort by the industry, with “discounts now feeding through to policy holders”.

Justice minister Helen Grant said: “We are turning the tide on the compensation culture which has pushed up the cost of insurance for drivers, schools and business – and taking another important step to reducing the cost of living for ordinary people.”

Earlier this month, City regulator the Financial Conduct Authority launched an investigation into insurance companies for overcharging customers when they renew their car and house policies.

The FCA says automatic renewal can lead to customers being treated unfairly.

BBC Radio 4′s Money Box revealed in March that loyal customers often pay much more than new ones for insurance.

The insurance industry says consumers can shop around for the best prices in a competitive market.

OSTRAVA, Czech Republic — World and Olympic 400 metres champion Kirani James lived up to expectation winning the event in record time at the Golden Spike meet in Ostrava on Thursday.James thrilled a capacity crowd by racing to a meet record of 44.49 seconds on the track where he was first noticed as a 400m prodigy when he competed as a 14 year-old to win silver at the World Youth Championships six years ago.The Grenadian athlete successfully chased down another outstanding quarter-miler’s achievement – the meet record of 44.70 set by Cuban Alberto Juantorena in 1976.James,  chased by South African Wade van Niekerk, was never threatened by the field and made up for the ‘tactical’ error in Eugene, Oregon when he was beaten by American LaShawn Merritt.“It was good. I felt I had a very good run. I executed my race good,” he said after today’s win.“I think with the conditions and my performance, I am track to do some great things.”James will next compete on July 6 in Paris at the Meeting Areva 2013 (Diamond League) which is billed as “The Revenge Match” as he again takes on Merritt over one lap.Like our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/jamaicaobserverFollow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/JamaicaObserver
