Tracy Morgan was seen weak and limping as he headed into a New Jersey post office with his fiancee Megan Wollover on Wednesday, just the third time the actor has been seen in public since he was involved in a horrifying car accident this past June.

The actor was leaning on a walker as he slowly moved down the sidewalk and said he was still ‘fighting every day’ after being involved in the crash, which claimed the life of his friend James McNair and injured 3 others.
Morgan suffered a traumatic brain injury as well as a broken leg, a broken nose and broken ribs in the accident.

At one point as he returned to his car from the post office, the actor even had to briefly stop and catch his breath before moving on. In addition to his fiancee he was also accompanied by an aide who was there to help him get into the car.

Morgan was critically injured in early June when a Wal-Mart tractor-trailer rammed into a limousine bus he and his friends were travelling in on the New Jersey Turnpike. The comedian, known for his roles on Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock, was returning home to New York City from a show at a Delaware casino. He spent almost two months in the hospital and rehab following the accident before he could return home, and the extent of his brain injury is still unknown.

‘He’s fighting to get better, and if there’s a chance for him to be back to the Tracy Morgan he once was, he’s going to try to do that,’ said his lawyer Benedict Morelli last month. ‘But we just don’t know because of the severity of the injuries that he sustained and the fact that he had such a severe brain injury.’

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Kevin Roper, was charged with death by auto and four counts of assault by auto in a New Jersey state court. Earlier this week, Morgan and his attorneys accused Wal-Mart of stalling in a federal lawsuit that have brought against the company over their safety practices after it was reported that Roper was asleep at the wheel at the time of the crash.

Morgan was forced to put an FX series he had in development on hold after the accident, though his new film with Chris Rock, Take Five, will be released this month.

He came out against Wal_mart in a public statement this past September after they accused him of being at fault during the accident for not wearing a seatbelt. ‘I can’t believe Walmart is blaming me for an accident they caused,’ he said at the time.

‘I’m fighting hard every day to get back.’

The Bank of  Jamaica has released data showing more than US$1 billion  in remittance inflows during the first 6 months of  this year.  The inflow was 3.4%  higher than a year ago. It was also the highest level remittance inflow has been for the first six months of  any year. In June, the inflow was more than US$168 million.

May and June were the hottest months ever as global warming heats up

FLORIDA, United States, Friday July 25, 2014 – The planet appears to be turning up the jets, setting a global heat record last month hot on the heels of breaking the same record in May.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the average global temperature in June was 61.2 degrees, which is 1.3 degrees higher than the 20th century average, and beat the record set in 2010 by one-twentieth of a degree.

Although one-twentieth of a degree might not sound impressive, “it’s like winning a horse race by several lengths” when it comes to temperature records, according to NOAA climate monitoring chief Derek Arndt.

Arndt went on to reveal that the world’s oceans not only broke a monthly heat record at 62.7 degrees, but it was the hottest the oceans have been on record in any month.

“We are living in the steroid era of the climate system,” he commented.

The climatologist explained that both the May and June records were driven by unusually hot oceans, especially the Pacific and Indian oceans.

Although the United States had only its 33rd hottest June, heat records were broken in June on every continent but Antarctica. Particularly high temperatures were recorded in New Zealand, northern South America, Greenland, central Africa and southern Asia.

According to NOAA, the first six months of this year were the third warmest first six months on record, trailing 2010 and 1998.

June was the 352nd hotter-than-average month in a row as determined by global temperature records dating back to 1880.

All 12 of the world’s monthly heat records have been set since 1997, more than half of them in the last decade.

All of the global monthly records for low temperatures were set prior to 1917.

Man gets nine months for buying stolen watch

Nine months imprisonment was handed down on Friday in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court to a man who told the court that he bought a stolen watch for $200, after being charged with robbery related offences.

Charged with robbery and aggravation is Junior Franklin. He pleaded guilty to receiving stolen goods but denied the aggravation allegations.

“I am only guilty of receiving stolen goods,” said Franklin.

The court was told that on the day in question, Franklin stole a watch, silver necklace and an envelope containing money.

Franklin told the court, “I bought it (watch) for $200.”

Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey said, “Not even the kiddies watch sell for that”, before she turned to the complainant asking, “Is that the man who robbed you?”.

The complainant then acknowledged that it was Franklin who robbed her saying, “Yes Ma’am.”

A fingerprint order was also made against Franklin.

Sunday lottery earned $700 million in its first three months of allowance, according to financials from dominant gaming company, Supreme Ventures Ltd (SVL).“The company began Sunday/holiday lottery sales and game draws on 1st April 2013. The additional selling days positively impacted the revenues for the financial period, with Sunday sales contributing over $700 million to the revenues,” said SVL in a statement adjoining the June-quarter financial accounts, signed by chairman Paul Hoo and CEO Brian George.SVL earned $8.6 billion in total revenues for the June quarter compared with $7.2 billion a year earlier.The directors added that the impact of Sunday sales on total revenues was, however, countered by a reduction in unclaimed prizes of $44 million, lower net win of $119 million from VLT gaming due to delayed opening of the refurbished Acropolis lounges and Odyssey, and $38 million from discontinued hospitality operations.Government in February announced measures to raise $16.4-billion in additional taxes and offered SVL carrot-and-stick measures. It first allowed SVL to sell lottery tickets on Sundays and public holidays effective April 1, but concurrently forced them to incorporate an increase in lottery tax (GPT) rates from 17 per cent and 23 per cent to 20 per cent and 25 per cent respectively on nine games.Christians view Sunday as a religious day of rest, and the local church body opposed the introduction of Sunday lottery for years.Meanwhile, higher Lotto liabilities and taxation were blamed for the company posting $99.9 million in June-quarterly net profit or 69 per cent less than a year earlier.“The decrease in net profit after tax was directly attributable to higher-than-designed lottery game liabilities and the impact of increased taxation on the gaming sector, which came into effect on 1st April 2013,” stated financials.The directors’ outlook remained tempered by the weak economy and taxation.“The third quarter is expected to be a continuation of the challenging times faced by many local companies, as the limited disposable income of many consumers will be directed towards back-to-school expenses,” stated the joint statement in the financals. “While game liabilities will correct themselves over time, the company expects that the impact of the new taxation measures on the gaming sector will continue to adversely affect the financial results going forward.”

THE Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) says it will be returning to its usual conference format this November at the National Arena, after last year’s heavily reduced one-day delegates meeting at the Jamaica Conference Centre.

Last year’s 69th annual conference still attracted noisy, green-clad, bell- ringing Labourites, but saw a much smaller crowd that comprised mainly delegates, as the activities were reduced and merged into a one-day meeting of delegates, which nevertheless raised issues about the election of the four deputy leaders.But, having shaken off the residue of its devastating loss to the People’s National Party (PNP) in December 2011, Opposition Leader Andrew Holness says that the party will return to its usual conference format this year with a bang, and expects to stage a “really, really big conference”.Holness was speaking at this week’s Jamaica Observer Monday Exchange at the newspaper’s Beechwood Avenue headquarters, along with a team of executives including general secretary, Dr Horace Chang, chairman Robert Montague and publicity committee chairperson Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange.Grange informed reporters that the celebrations, which began with a church service on Sunday in Lionel Town, Clarendon, a former political base for its founder, Sir William Alexander Bustamante, will be highlighted by a number of events including its “70 for 70″ awards functions, honouring 70 persons who have served the party over its 70 years. The awards will be made at the constituency level, culminating in a special awards ceremony at the annual conference on November 10, at the National Arena.The party’s area councils will also be staging some events, while some will be done jointly with the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU), and the party’s young professionals affiliate, Generation 2000 (G2K), is planning a major conference this year as well.Sunday’s national church service in Lionel Town was followed by an inaugural Founder’s Day Lecture Monday night at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, at which former Prime Minister Edward Seaga was the keynote speaker.Other major events include a media appreciation party at the JLP’s Belmont Road headquarters to mark the birthday of party leader Holness; the 36th anniversary of the passing of Sir Alexander on August 6; the JLP’s 70th anniversary Lecture Series on August 26, which will feature former Prime Minister Bruce Golding, who will speak on the life and work of Sir Donald Sangster, another former prime minister under the JLP. Sir Donald’s birthday will be celebrated on October 26.Former ambassador to the United States and high commissioner to London, Anthony Johnson, will launch his book on the history of the party during the celebrations.
