Watson film premieres Sunday

THIS Sunday, February 1 will see the world premiere of They Call Me Barrington — of a film on the life and work Jamaican master painter Barrington Watson.

The film, a project of local filmmaker Lennie Little-White, will examine the life and art of the 83-year-old artist, and form the second in a trilogy of films on Jamaican icons in the arts, which started with Rex Nettleford (December 2013) and is to be concluded with poet/cultural ambassador, Louise Bennett-Coverley — Miss Lou.

Sunday’s premiere is set for the iconic Carib cinema in the Corporate Area.

Little-White told the Jamaica Observer that Watson is the most outstanding painter in Jamaica.

“He broke many grounds, in that art wasn’t a hobby, you could earn a living from it. Today, he’s an inspiration to young artists. He’s in his 80s and still doing work,” he said.

The filmmaker added that the project, which is being funded “out-of-pocket”, will feature Watson “in his own words”. He has also used footage of the painter shot over a decade-and-a-half ago.

Premier League champions MoBay United host Rivoli United Sunday

PAUL A REID Observer West writer

Thursday, October 16, 2014

TUCKER, ST JAMES — DEFENDING Red Stripe Premier League champions Montego Bay United will hope to make Rivoli United’s third trip to western Jamaica in 11 days another losing one when they meet in a first-round game at Wespow Park on Sunday afternoon.

Rivoli United lost back-to-back games to Reno FC at Frome Sports Grounds last week Thursday in the Flow Champions Cup KO, and then got a big 5-1 whipping on Sunday in the RSPL.

Despite this, Rivoli United are above Montego Bay United in the point’s tables — one point and two places — but have never won at Wespow Park.

Rivoli United are in fourth place on eight points while Montego Bay United are in sixth place with seven points.

Montego Bay United will be full of confidence coming into the game after a 2-0 win over promoted Barbican FC at the UWI Bowl last weekend, their first away win of the season after losses to Waterhouse and leaders Cavalier SC.

Strikers Allan Ottey and Omar Gordon will be expected to lead the Montego Bay United attack as they seek their third win and keep their unbeaten home record intact.

Montego Bay United have scored five of their seven goals at home and have conceded just once in Montego Bay, in a 1-1 draw against Reno in the opening round.

Mario Deane to be buried Sunday

MONTEGO BAY, St James — Mario Deane, the Montego Bay construction worker who died after being beaten at the Barnett Street police lock-up, is to be buried on Sunday.

The service of thanksgiving for his life will be held at the Mount Salem Seventh-day Adventist Church, in St James. His body will be interred in the Lucea cemetery in Hanover.

Deane, who was arrested for possession of a ganja spliff, was beaten, allegedly by cellmates, and succumbed to his injuries on August 6. His death triggered local and international protests, with calls for justice for his family.

Arising from the incident, two inmates have been charged with murder, while a police corporal and two constables

have been interdicted. Three district constables were suspended, pending the outcome of a probe by the police inspectorate into the incident.

Meanwhile, the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has reportedly completed it’s probe into Deane’s death.

INDECOM will determine whether charges should be laid against the members of the police force who were on duty when Deane was beaten.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Sunday July 20, 2014, CMC - Dissatisfied with concessions on the Municipal Solid Waste Tax the Opposition Barbados Labour Party plans a mass rally Sunday evening in downtown Bridgetown, where party leaders may announce protest marches.

This new tax was announced last year with a sweeping .03 per cent charge on the site value of every real estate property across the island, but there have been widespread complaints about the financial burden it places on residents.

Cabinet Thursday decided to waive all payments of this levy for pensioners with property valued under $190,000 (One BDS dollar = 50 US cents), slashed it for agricultural land, and pushed back the payment deadline for others.

But Opposition Leader Mia Mottley Friday, described the changes as a ‘knee-jerk reaction’

“I welcome the news that some pensioners whose properties are valued at $190,000 or less will not now pay the tax. But there are still thousands more pensioners who still have to pay the full tax if their properties are above this value,” Mottley said.

Representatives of businesses and pensioners also welcomed the changes, but said they want more.

The political opposition maintained it stance that this legislation must be repealed.

“We are not stopping short of the complete repeal of this unfair, disgusting, discriminatory piece of legislation,” said BLP Senator, Wilfred Abrahams, in one of the many public meetings held last week as momentum builders for Sunday’s rally.

“It is coming a point in time very soon when we are going to call on the people of Barbados to walk with us,” he said in reference to Sunday’s rally.

CAUSE to host mass rally Sunday

Chad Bryan, Star Writer

Several members from denominations across the island will participate in a mass rally in Half-Way Tree square on Sunday at 5 p.m. in support of a number of national issues.

The rally, which has been organised by the newly formed local church group, Jamaica Churches Action Uniting Society for Emancipation (CAUSE), sets to urge Jamaicans to stand up for a strong and healthy family structure, for justice and righteousness in the nation, and to stand up against the repeal of the buggery law and against the homosexual agenda.

“There is a secularist agenda that seeks to reconfigure and restructure our nation in a different format. We want to raise the awareness of the Jamaican people about that agenda. We want to encourage our people to continue to support the foundation upon which the Jamaican society has been built, which is a foundation built on scripture,” said senior member of CAUSE, the Reverend Dr Stevenson Samuels.

Samuels pointed out that within the secularist agenda is the homosexual agenda.

“This is being pushed by major entities, many of which are international, multinational agencies that are imposing their core values on our nation through conventions and organisations,” said Samuels, who urged Jamaicans to resist this agenda.

Samuels mentioned that the support from the local churches, particularly those under the Jamaica umbrella groups of churches, which represents roughly 99 per cent of the country’s Christian community, has been tremendous.

A number of pastors are also expected to speak at the rally, including leading anti-gay pastor, the Reverend Peter Garth.

Fares go up this Sunday

COME Sunday it will cost adults $100 to ride the state-owned Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) buses, up from $80.

However, concessionary fares — those for children under 12, students in uniform, the disabled, and the elderly — will remain at $20, but only for those paying with a Smart Card.Transport Minister Dr Omar Davies also announced a 25 per cent hike across the board for other public transport operators and this, too, takes effect on August 25.Children under 12, those in uniform, the disabled, and elderly travelling on minibuses and route taxis will be required to pay half of the approved fare.“…despite the pressures on the company (JUTC), Cabinet has taken the decision to hold the concessionary fare at the present level of $20. As regards the fare for adults on the JUTC, Cabinet has approved an increase from $80 to $100,” Davies announced at a press conference at the ministry’s Maxfield Avenue offices in Kingston yesterday.“After taking into consideration the significant movement in the cost of operation facing the sector since the last increase was granted, Cabinet has approved fare increases of 25 per cent for route taxi operators… Cabinet has also approved a similar increase to rural stage carriages (and) children under the age of 12 years, students in uniform, disabled persons and pensioners will pay 50 per cent of the approved fares,” he said. However, minibus and taxi operators, through their associations, yesterday stoutly rejected the increase on the basis that it was not enough.“For us, 25 per cent is inadequate and we are disappointed the minister did not inform us before so we could have a meaningful discussion,” Deon Chance, president of the National Council of Taxi Associations, told the Jamaica Observer.Chance said the association’s leadership will meet in a few days but that there is no guarantee they will accept the increase. They had requested a 40 per cent hike and Chance said they were prepared to settle for 30 per cent.President of the Jamaica Association of Transport Owners and Operators (JATOO) Louis Barton said the increase is disappointing.“Twenty-five per cent is totally inadequate… the only other way to cut back on things is to cut short on the service we provide,” Barton said, adding that he did not know what his fellow operators would now do.But according to Davies, the increase represents the minimum justifieable, given the significant increases which have taken place in all the inputs required for the provision of transportation services. The new fares are expected to increase the JUTC’s daily revenue by 50 per cent, moving it from $7 million to $10.5 million. In tandem with that, Davies said the new cashless system for concessionary fares, which accounts for 55 per cent of the bus company’s ridership, will help in eliminating “leakage” from the fare box.Transport Minister Dr Omar Davies addressing a press conference to announce a 25 per cent increase in bus and taxi fares at the ministry’s Maxfield Avenue offices in Kingston yesterday. Sunday lottery earns Supreme Ventures $700 million in three months

Business

BY STEVEN JACKSON Business writer jacksons@jamaicaobserver.comFriday, August 09, 2013

Sunday lottery earned $700 million in its first three months of allowance, according to financials from dominant gaming company, Supreme Ventures Ltd (SVL).“The company began Sunday/holiday lottery sales and game draws on 1st April 2013. The additional selling days positively impacted the revenues for the financial period, with Sunday sales contributing over $700 million to the revenues,” said SVL in a statement adjoining the June-quarter financial accounts, signed by chairman Paul Hoo and CEO Brian George.SVL earned $8.6 billion in total revenues for the June quarter compared with $7.2 billion a year earlier. The directors added that the impact of Sunday sales on total revenues was, however, countered by a reduction in unclaimed prizes of $44 million, lower net win of $119 million from VLT gaming due to delayed opening of the refurbished Acropolis lounges and Odyssey, and $38 million from discontinued hospitality operations.Government in February announced measures to raise $16.4-billion in additional taxes and offered SVL carrot-and-stick measures. It first allowed SVL to sell lottery tickets on Sundays and public holidays effective April 1, but concurrently forced them to incorporate an increase in lottery tax (GPT) rates from 17 per cent and 23 per cent to 20 per cent and 25 per cent respectively on nine games.Christians view Sunday as a religious day of rest, and the local church body opposed the introduction of Sunday lottery for years.Meanwhile, higher Lotto liabilities and taxation were blamed for the company posting $99.9 million in June-quarterly net profit or 69 per cent less than a year earlier.“The decrease in net profit after tax was directly attributable to higher-than-designed lottery game liabilities and the impact of increased taxation on the gaming sector, which came into effect on 1st April 2013,” stated financials. The directors’ outlook remained tempered by the weak economy and taxation.“The third quarter is expected to be a continuation of the challenging times faced by many local companies, as the limited disposable income of many consumers will be directed towards back-to-school expenses,” stated the joint statement in the financals. “While game liabilities will correct themselves over time, the company expects that the impact of the new taxation measures on the gaming sector will continue to adversely affect the financial results going forward.”
