Narine, Bravo, Roach in World Cup quad

ST JOHN’S, Antigua and Barbuda (AFP) — Highlyrated off spinner Sunil Narine, top-order batsman Darren Bravo and fast bowler Kemar Roach were all named in the West Indies World Cup squad yesterday despite missing out on the current South Africa tour.

Narine was summoned to share spin-bowling duties with Sulieman Benn, Bravo was recalled after choosing to sit out the current series for “personal reasons”, while Roach has recovered from an injury suffered in the team’s 220-run defeat against South Africa in the first Test last month.

Barbados all-rounder Jason Holder was confirmed as captain with experienced batsman Marlon Samuels appointed vice-captain.

The most experienced ODI player in the squad is opener Chris Gayle with 258 appearances. Samuels (162), Denesh Ramdin (115) and Darren Sammy (115) all have over a hundred ODI games under their belts, while Dwayne Smith (94) could achieve his 100th appearance during the World Cup which starts on February 14.

The squad has a total of 1,156 ODI appearances with only Sheldon Cottrell and Jonathan Carter yet to debut internationally. Carter and Cottrell are both in the ODI squad to face South Africa in a five-match series to commence shortly.

“I believe we have selected a very good team which will do West Indies proud at the World Cup,” said Clive Lloyd, the West Indies chairman of selectors. “We have a good mixture of some good seasoned players and some good youngsters who will fly the West Indies flag in Australia and New Zealand.

“If they play to their potential I am quite sure we will do very well. I have really high hopes in this team.

I believe they can do something special.” As expected, there was no World Cup reprieve for former captain Dwayne Bravo, who was axed after the team’s controversial decision to quit October’s tour of India four matches into a five-game One- Day Series over a pay dispute.

West Indies play their opening World Cup match on February 16 against Ireland before going on to face Pool B rivals, defending champions India, South Africa, Pakistan, Zimbabwe and the United Arab Emirates.

MUMBAI, India (CMC) — West Indies’ chances in the upcoming one-day series against India has been dealt a severe blow, with the West Indies Cricket Board opting to pull champion off-spinner Sunil Narine from the 14-man squad.

The move comes after the Trinidadian right-armer was twice reported for having a suspected illegal action during the Champions League Twenty20 and was subsequently banned from bowling in the tournament.

A replacement for Narine is expected to be named shortly with combative left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn widely expected to fill the breach.

In a release late Friday night, the WICB said the decision to withdraw Narine from the tour was taken after discussions with the player, the selection panel and the West Indies team management, and said the time off would allow the bowler the opportunity to have his action assessed.

Chairman of selectors Clive Lloyd said he was “disappointed” by the latest development which saw Narine reported by umpires following Kolkata Knight Riders’ final preliminary CLT20 game last Monday and then following Thursday’s semi-final.

Lloyd, the legendary former West Indies captain, said West Indies were requesting “clarity” on the situation so the team could plan their way forward.

“I am disappointed that our best bowler could suddenly be out of the tour. I am quite disappointed about the procedure that surrounded the ‘calling’ of Sunil in the Champions [League] tournament,” Lloyd said.

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) — West Indies off spinner Sunil Narine, who recaptured his best form with a four wicket haul against Pakistan on Tuesday, is aiming to extend his wicket taking momentum to the third ODI which bowls off in St. Lucia tomorrow Friday July 19.Narine took four wickets for 26 runs off his 10 overs to floor the visitors and give the home side a crucial victory by 37 runs at the Guyana National Stadium.The 25-year-old spinner says he is unfazed by the pitch at the Beausejour Playing Field which is expected to play differently from the one at Providence where his exploits earned him man of the match.“We are now level and back in the series and we will look to move to St Lucia and win there as well,” said Narine.“The pitch there will be a bit different to what we have here in Guyana, but I believe I have the ability to bowl well there and get some more wickets”.Narine went wicketless off three overs when the West Indies lost  the opening ODI on Sunday, but he proved unstoppable on Tuesday as Pakistan were bowled out for 195 off 47.5 overs in reply to West Indies’ 232-8 off their 50 overs.“I just had to give it my all. I bowled a little quicker because, on this pitch, some balls were staying low and some were bouncing,” said Narine, who was voted ICC Emerging Player-of-the-Year last year and is presently Number 1 in the ICC ODI and T20 bowling rankings.“It was not an easy pitch for the batsmen to come after you and play their shot. KINGSTON, Jamaica — Christopher Gayle hammered 109 off 100 balls and Sunil Narine grabbed 4-40 to guide West Indies to a six-wicket win against Sri Lanka in Friday’s opening match of the Celkon Mobile Tri-Nation series at Sabina Park.

The Jamaican left-hander entertained the home fans while striking nine fours and seven sixes for his 21st One-Day International century.Scores: Sri Lanka 208 (48.3 overs); West Indies 209-4 (37.5 overs) ?Earlier, West Indies won the toss and asked the visitors to take first strike on a pitch which appeared a bit on the slow side.
