Tridents beaten but not disgraced, says Haynes

MOHALI, India (CMC) — Head coach Desmond Haynes believes Barbados Tridents have done themselves and the entire Caribbean proud despite their elimination from the ongoing Champions League Twenty20 tournament here.

The Barbados-based outfit – who represented the region after winning the Caribbean Premier League – suffered their third straight defeat against Hobart Hurricanes yesterday at the PCA Stadium, but Haynes said they were not outplayed nor disgraced.

“One thing we demonstrated here in this tournament was to show the world that we are good enough and West Indies cricket is on the up,” Haynes told reporters after the game.

“We showed the people around the world, especially here in India, that we can play and we can play well. Very few people expected us to be as competitive as we have been. I will repeat, that I believe West Indies cricket, especially in this format is pretty strong.”

Barbados suffered close defeats to King’s XI Punjab and South Africa’s Cape Cobras in their first two matches. Yesterday they went under by six wickets to Hobart Hurricanes. They will play their final match against Northern Knights of New Zealand tomorrow in Bangalore.

“In the first two games we came up short by about 10 to 20 runs … for those games the wicket was much better than tonight … I found the ball was holding up a bit in this match, but we didn’t bat well today and that basically cost us the match.”

Haynes said he was extremely impressed by the batting of left-hander Jonathan Carter, who made a brilliant 111 not out against the Cape Cobras and followed up with a stroke-filled 42 off 34 balls against the Australians.

He has played for the West Indies A team and has been on the verge of selection to the senior West Indies side for some time.

“When we selected Jonathan for the Barbados Tridents last year we identified him as someone who could keep wicket, bowl a bit of medium pace and is a very good player of spin,” the legendary former West Indies opener said.

“Back in Barbados he is considered one of the most talented cricketers that we have at home, so I was very impressed by the way he handled himself on the big stage. We always wanted him to believe in himself.

“[From] the first game he was ready to get going and this is a very big stage here. He really wanted to do well here…this can be a life-changer.”

Assessing yesterday’s defeat Haynes added: “Losing early wickets in a T20 match is always going to make things difficult …you have to spend time rebuilding and when you look around the game could be gone. Getting bowled out in 20 overs made it difficult, but I believed if we got around 140 runs we could have made a game of it.”

Warriors end Tridents unbeaten run

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) — Mohammad Hafeez and Steven Jacobs ripped through the middle order of the Barbados Tridents to help the Guyana Amazon Warriors register a crucial 27-run win over the front- runners after match 13 of the Limacol Caribbean Premier League at the Queen’s Park Oval here Sunday.

Hafeez snared three for 19 and Jacobs two for 12 both off four overs as the Barbados Tridents, searching for a victory target of 150, were dismissed for 122 in 19 overs and four balls.Veerasammy Permaul claimed the first wicket of the innings, having Kirk Edwards stumped by Denesh Ramdin for one, before Hafeez trapped Dwayne Smith leg before for 28 off 24 balls with five boundaries. The Tridents were then 48 for two. Umar Akmal came in and faced one ball, running past a delivery from Hafeez to be promptly stumped by Ramdin.Shaoib Malik, who was the eighth wicket to fall, watched on helplessly at the other end as the Tridents slid to 63 for six, including the wicket of influential skipper Kieron Pollard, who was bowled by Jacobs through the gate for one.Jacobs also accounted for Shakib Al- Hasan (3), who lofted a catch to James Franklin at long off.Carlos Brathwaite with 18 from 14 balls, and a late flurry from number 11 Jason Holder with 16 from four balls, including one four and two sixes in the final over bowled by Narine, were the only other knocks of merit.Krishmar Santokie with the wickets of Malik, caught by Mohammad Hafeez for 48, and Rayad Emrit, in successive deliveries, finished with two for 21. Sunil Narine was expensive picking up two for 46.Amazon Warriors won the toss and immediately had to endure the loss of Lendl Simmons off the first ball of the innings, playing on to Jason Holder as he attempted to cut square.Martin Guptill and Mohammad Hafeez went about repairing the early damage, posting a second- wicket partnership of 98 that raised hopes of a dominant total by the Warriors.Dwayne Smith conceded 20 runs in the 16th over with Guptill hitting a six, four, and six off the final three deliveries. But Warriors went into sharp decline thereafter. Hafeez top edged a slog off Smith and was caught by Pollard running in from long on that ended the partnership with Hafeez.James Franklin then added 38 with Guptill for the third wicket. But the demise of Franklin, caught by Smith at mid wicket, triggered a dramatic collapse that saw the Warriors lose their last seven wickets for 15 runs in the final three overs of the innings.Guptill was caught on the long on boundary by Pollard for 73 that came off 55 balls with four fours and four sixes.None of the remaining Warriors got into double figures as Rayad Emrit and Shakib Al-Hasan ploughed through the Amazon lower order.Emrit ended with three for 27 from four overs, and Shakib Al-Hasan bagged two for 25 from his four. The victory by the Guyana Amazon Warriors took them to six points, two below front runners Tridents, who are still top of the table with eight points after their first defeat of the CPL 2013. SANTOKIE… the Jamaican finished with two for 21 for Warriors

CPL: Al Hasan claims six as Barbados Tridents defeat TT Red Steel

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — Bangladeshi all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan melted the Trinidad Red Steel with a sensational spell of left-arm bowling which set-up a four-wicket victory for Barbados Tridents in their CPL T20 match at Kensington Oval Saturday night.

Al Hasan grabbed six wickets for six runs in a four-over spell that mesmerised and crippled the opposition, before the Tridents were made to fight off  West Indies paceman Fidel Edwards , who took five for 22, and threatened to spoil their celebrations.Batting first after winning the toss, the Red Steel scored a less than adequate 52 off 12.5 overs. The Tridents wobbled and responded with 53 for six off eight overs.Edwards, with a lively burst of speed and accuracy, rattled the Trident’s top order as he picked up the wickets of openers Dwayne Smith (6) and Johnathan Cater (14) and middle-order batsmen Kyle Mayers (3), wicketkeeper Umar Akmal (0) and Shakib Al Hasan (1) before captain Keiron Pollard and Ashley Nurse stemmed the mid-pitch drama and guided the Tridents to their third win in three matches. Before an expectant capacity crowd, the Red Steel never showed signs of controlling the match. They seemed uninspired for the encounter and once openers Davy Jacobs and Justin Guillen were sent back with 15 runs on the board off three overs, wickets tumbled regularly as the Tridents ripped apart the opposition. They were 25 for three by the fifth over, with pacemen Jason Holder and Shannon Gabriel sharing the early wickets, before man-of-the match Al Hasan began his demolition job.Producing bounce and turn on a wicket that offered assistance, the left-arm spinner exposed the shortcomings of the opposing batsmen as they groped uncertainly and the Red Steel struggled to post 50 runs on the board. The last eight wickets perished for just 27 runs and the innings collapsed when Sulieman Benn lofted the fifth ball of Gabriel’s third over to Johnathan Carter.Chasing what appeared to be an easy target, the Tridents were off to a flying start as aggressive opener Johnathan Carter hit 14 off six balls, including two big sixes off left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn, but once he was sent back by Edwards, the Tridents struggled to close out the match. From 25 for one in the second over, the Tridents slipped to 39 for six in the sixth over, losing five wickets for the addition of 14 runs.Pollard and Nurse brought some stability to the innings and Nurse sealed the victory for the Tridents as he whipped the last ball of Edwards’ fourth over for a boundary.Like our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/jamaicaobserverFollow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/JamaicaObserver

Barbados Tridents savour victory in opening CPL fixture

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — Barbados Tridents pulled off an exciting 17-run triumph over Saint Lucia Zouks as the inaugural edition of the Limacol Caribbean Premiere League (LCPL) got underway at the Kensington Oval, here Tuesday.

Chasing 170 for victory, the Zouks were dismissed for 152 in 19.4 overs despite a promising start by openers Andre Fletcher and Tamim Iqbal, who put on 57 for the first wicket.Iqbal lost his composure, charged to Ashley Nurse and was promptly stumped by Umar Akmal when he had reached 22. The innings never regained full momentum despite a commanding knock of 57 by Andre Fletcher.Kieron Pollard brought about his demise jumping high to complete a fascinating catch at mid-on, as he sought to send Nurse over the top. His innings was laced with four fours and four sixes. Devon Smith (9), Misbah Ul-Haq, 12, and Albie Morkel, no score, sunk in the middle of the innings leaving skipper Darren Sammy to struggle to increase the run rate.He managed 35 off 16 deliveries with four fours and two sixes before being bowled by Jason Holder while attempting to swing to long on. Shane Shillingford, Garey Mathurin, and Tino Best all failed to score, as the Zouks tried desperately to achieve their target.Pollard had a fine all-round game picking up three for 15 off 2.4 overs. Jason Holder, Ashley Nurse and Rayad Emrit all picked up two wickets.Earlier in the evening Barbados Tridents won the toss, batted and got off to the worst possible start as the pugnacious Dwayne Smith edged the first ball of the match from Albie Morkel, to Andre Fletcher behind the stumps.Jonathan Carter and Shoaib Malik then put on 30 for the second wicket until Carter pulled Sammy to backward square and was caught by Devon Smith for 11. Shakib al Hasan became Sammy’s second victim, caught by Fletcher, standing up to the stumps for five.Umar Akmal failed to score, caught by Sammy running around from first slip as Ukmal swept at Shane Shillingford. The Tridents by then had found themselves 48 for four in 7.2 overs. Tridents captain Pollard then joined Man-of-the-Match Shoaib Malik and the pair added 88 for the fifth wicket.Malik, who struck eight fours and one six in his 51-ball knock, entertained the huge Kensington Oval crowd with shots all around the ground. When on 68 he was bowled by a Nelon Pascal no ball, having previously struck a six and a four off the same bowler from his two previous deliveries. When Malik went to a low running catch by Herschelle Gibbs off Tino Best, Pollard stepped up the tempo for the Tridents smashing an unbeaten 61 from 46 balls with four fours and three sixes, the final of which was a huge six over long on from the final delivery of the innings sent down by Best. Darren Sammy was the leading wicket-taker with two for 36.
