A woman accused of being a pickpocket was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment when she appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Charged with two counts of receiving stolen property is Nicholla Myles.

Allegations are that on August 23 between the hours of about 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., the accused was found in possession of a black LG cellular phone identified as being property of a 32-year-old female complainant and also a black and blue Samsung cellular phone which was identified as being the property of a 13-year-old female complainant. As a result, the accused woman was charged for two counts of receiving stolen property as it was discovered that the cellular phones were stolen whilst both complainants were shopping in the downtown Kingston area.

It is believed that the 32-year-old complainant was going back-to-school shopping with her family when she sought to make a phone call. Much to her surprise, as she unzipped her handbag to reach for the device, it was discovered that the LG cell phone was taken from a compartment inside the bag.

In a separate incident, the 13-year-old complainant, who accompanied her aunt to do a bit of back-to-school shopping in the area, discovered that her Samsung cell phone was taken from her knapsack as she was wearing it on her back.

Both parties subsequently made reports to the police.

The court heard that Myles was previously sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment on August 28, when she pleaded guilty to larceny from the person charges.

Subsequently, Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey sentenced the accused woman to 18 months in prison on both counts, to run concurrently.
