Tougher regulations are coming to govern the practice of dentistry in Jamaica.
Health Minister Dr. Fenton Ferguson who made the announcement during his Sectoral Debate presentation in Parliament on Tuesday, outlined some of the objectives of the new regulations.
“Regulating the practice of dentistry to ensure that only licensed practitioners can own and operate a dental surgery and a dental laboratory. Mandatory continued education for of all categories of dental professionals, regulating training for prescribing additional categories of dental auxillaries, describing different categories for the registration of dental professionals
He says an agreement is also in place to establish a National Dental Examination Board.
The Health Minister also said the pilot programme for an electronic patient administration system is now in operation.
“I am happy to announced that implementation of the pilot project has started to put in place electronic patient administration systems in eight facilities …,” he said.
The National Health Fund will provide J$268-million to purchase health care equipment.
