Jamaica's competitiveness improves

Jamaica has improved in ranking in the just released 2014/2015 Global Competitiveness Report.

It was placed 86 out of 144 countries in the Global Competitiveness Index.

This is up from 94 in last year’s index and 97 in 2012/2013.
Crime and theft, inefficient Government bureaucracy, corruption and tax rates as well as poor work ethic in the labour force were listed as the most problematic factors for doing business in Jamaica.
Also on the list were access to financing, inflation, tax regulations and an inadequately educated work force.
The Global Competitiveness Report released by the World Economic Forum shows the UK has edged up the rankings.
It moved one spot to ninth on the list, while Switzerland and Singapore retained first and second place.
The US improved its competitiveness position for the second consecutive year, climbing two places to third.
But the World Economic Forum warns that the global economy’s health is at risk, despite years of  monetary stimulus and reforms.
Each year, the Forum, best known for its annual Davos economic meeting, benchmarks countries against 12 factors, including infrastructure, education and training, labour market efficiency, technological readiness and innovation.
The aim is to produce a comparative picture of  what is driving competitiveness, productivity, and prosperity.

Marley"s album honoured by international ice cream company

CURTIS CAMPBELL, STAR Writer

Internationally renowned ice cream brand, Ben & Jerry’s, will release a special flavour of their popular ice cream in honour of Bob Marley’s Legend album, as a part of the celebrations for the album’s 30th anniversary this year.

The flavour will be called ‘Satisfy my Bowl’ and is aimed at drawing awareness to Marley’s vision for peace, love and social justice.

The socially conscious ice cream company wanted to pay tribute to the man who dedicated his life to bringing people together through music.

‘Satisfy My Bowl’, which was named by a Ben & Jerry’s fan, is a concoction of banana ice cream beats, a mash-up of caramel and cookie swirls, and a chorus of chocolatey peace signs.

All proceeds from the partnership will be contributed to the 1Love Foundation and Partners for Youth Empowerment, in an effort to empower young people in Jamaica, and continue Bob Marley’s legacy of using music to change the world.

According to Cedella Marley, representing the 1Love Foundation, the partnership will bring people together.

“To mark Legend’s 30th anniversary, we’re celebrating our father’s legacy of bringing people together and using music to drive social change through a sweet partnership with Ben & Jerry’s. Proceeds from a special edition ice cream flavour will enable the 1Love Foundation and Partners for Youth Empowerment to support young people in Jamaica by igniting their creative skills to promote peace, love and social equality.” she said.

Ben & Jerry’s Social Mission Manager, Ed Shepherd, also stated. “In the same way Ben & Jerry’s stands for more than just (delicious) ice-cream, Bob Marley stood for more than just music – he advocated for social change and inspired millions to think about peace, love, and equality. Ben & Jerry’s has a rich heritage of campaigning for social justice, by partnering with the Marley family’s 1Love Foundation and Partners for Youth Empowerment. We want to lend our voice to Bob’s vision, and do this in a fun way that brings people together.” he said.

Bob Marley is one of the most important and influential artiste of the 20th century. In the digital era, Marley has the second-highest social media following of any posthumous celebrity, with the official Bob Marley Facebook page now surpassing 69 million fans, ranking it among the Top 20 of all Facebook pages and Top 10 among celebrity pages. His music catalogue has sold more than 50 million albums worldwide since 1992.

Chris Brown has pleaded guilty to assault

The ‘Beautiful People’ hitmaker was sentenced to time already served by a judge after accepting a plea deal at a Washington DC Superior Court yesterday, where he was charged with misdemeanour assault for allegedly punching Parker Adams outside the W Hotel in October.

According to TMZ, the star apologised in court and said he wanted to get his music career back on track.

The singer’s bodyguard, Christopher Hollosy, was also accused of hitting Parker, who claimed he was struck after trying to get in a photograph with the Yeah 3X hitmaker.

Chris’ girlfriend, Karrueche Tran, was present at the Washington DC Superior Court to lend her beau some support.

The singer was released from jail on June 2 after spending 108 days behind bars for violating his probation after he allegedly made threats about using guns while seeking anger-management treatment in rehab.

He was previously placed on probation for five years and sentenced to six months community service for assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009.

Last month, the star was praised by a judge for his good behaviour after appearing at a Los Angeles court for a progress report on his probation.

Idris Elba keeps kids out of spotlight

Idris Elba

Idris Elba doesn’t want to live a celebrity lifestyle. The 41-year-old actor – who has daughter Isan, 11, with his ex-wife Dormowa Sherman, and four-month-old son Winston, with girlfriend Naiyana Garth – insists he has no plans to move to the US from the UK, because he doesn’t want his children growing up in the limelight.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror newspaper, he said: “I won’t be moving out here [to LA]. I don’t want to get into all of that. I don’t want my family growing up here. That isn’t me, it just isn’t. I rented a place on my own in North Hollywood, but the time I spent here was on my own. I’m not into the whole fame thing. I don’t have celebrity friends. I have the same ones I had from when I was a kid. For me it’s about my family, it’s about my kids, what is best for them.”

Idris credits his childhood growing up in Hackney, London, for helping him to stay level-headed.

He explained: “It wasn’t easy but I feel at home there. I love it, it’s that kind of place. My heart will always be there. I learned so much there. I have the best memories of playing outside with my friends. We had very little but it didn’t matter. It was the simple things that I enjoyed and I still do. It was a poor area back then but it taught me a lot.”
