Singer robbed of car money. Paid $500,000 for undelivered vehicle

file Iba Mahr

Diamond Sox reggae crooner, Iba Mahr was swindled out of thousands of dollars by a man who promised he could secure a motor vehicle on his behalf.

Charged for fraudulent conversion is 41-year-old Craig Wilson of a Kingston 6 address, who appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court, last week.

The Crown alleges that Wilson was given $500,000 to import a 2010 Honda Civic motor vehicle valued at $1,000,000 for the complainant, whose given name is Mario Greaves.

The deposit of $500,000 was required and a further payment of the same amount to be made upon the arrival of the vehicle.

To date, Greaves, who was promised that the vehicle would have been delivered in early 2014 has not yet been reimbursed or been given the vehicle.

In court, the prosecution told Resident Magistrate Lorna Shelly-Williams that Wilson had promised to pay back the money and had subsequently asked for more time but did not return. He was eventually picked up on a warrant.

The matter has been set for mention this week.

Barkeep, student charged with possession of stolen motor vehicle

A bartender and a student were hauled before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday after they were allegedly found to be in possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

Charged with receiving stolen property and fraudulent use of license plates is bartender Hezekiah Walker and student Stephanie Nelson, both of Runaway Bay, St Ann.

The Crown alleges that on Sunday, September 14, about 11 p.m., a police party from the Runaway Bay Police Station, acting on information, went to the home of the two accused, who are said to be in a relationship.

A grey 2010 Nissan Tiida was discovered in their possession, along with three sets of registration plates and other car documents. The vehicle is valued at $1.8 million.

It was revealed that the car had been stolen late last year in Stony Hill, St Andrew, and was said to have been purchased for $750,000 from an individual known to the couple.

Both accused were granted bail in the sum of $400,000.

They are to return to court on November 5.

Trinidad government says armoured vehicle purchase was necessary to fight crime

armoured_vehicles_885132303

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, Thursday September 11, 2014, CMC – The Trinidad and Tobago government has sought to defend the decision to purchase a number of specially outfitted armoured vehicles, saying that it was necessary in the ongoing fight against crime on the island.

A statement from the Ministry of National Security said the vehicles would not be operated in an offensive mode but rather to protect the population including law enforcement officials.

It quoted National Security Minister Gary Griffith as saying that “the only persons who should see these assets as intimidating are those operating on the wrong side of the law.

“The acquisition of these vehicles is all part of the unified effort of delivery on the mandate of the Government to restore Trinidad and Tobago to a safer and more secured nation for all its citizens,” the release stated.

The statement said that armoured vehicles were not new to Trinidad and Tobago even as it acknowledged that the Defence Force has not been able to acquire these types of vehicles in over 20 years, and were instead utilising normal civilian vehicles to perform the duties expected of the Defence Force.

“(Minister) Griffith stated that modern-day law enforcement is evolving at a rapid rate to treat with threats which may not have existed decades ago. Due to the transnational nature of crime, there is now more than ever a need to restructure and realign T&T’s National Security apparatus as the present capacity of our Defence Force and law enforcement agencies does not cater for these new threats.”

The statement noted that while there are currently no intelligence reports of any existing disturbances or pending threats to this country, the authorities are putting the appropriate precautionary measures in place to deal with any future eventuality.

“It is better for this country to be prepared for any probability now rather than sit and wait for innocent lives to be lost…this country must be committed, we must be prepared and we will be prepared”.

“For far too long previous ministers of National Security have been accused of not doing enough and he is willing to run the risk of being accused of doing too much to secure our people’s right to life and property,” the statement quoted Griffith as saying.

The release stated that the vehicles represent a new generation of law enforcement practice as they can be configured in various models to support the police, the military and counter-terrorism units in whatever terrain they need to operate.

The vehicles, the release said, were even being used in neighbouring Caribbean nations such as Guyana and Jamaica.

“They will offer maximum protection against various large calibres of weapons for the soldiers and officers of the Police Service who will be operating them in high-risk areas. These vehicles are built to withstand ballistic attack and provide advanced protection against anti-personnel mines and grenade blasts.

“It combines the speed, manoeuvrability and weapons platform options required for roles ranging from command and control and military tactical operations to SWAT, riot control, counter terrorism and counter surveillance.

“The purchase of these and other vehicles and equipment to be used by our law enforcement agencies, should act as a deterrent and would be sending a strong message to criminals to be aware that picking a fight with law enforcement and security personnel is not a fight that they would want to undertake,” the release added.

Gareth Davis Sr, Star Writer

Grub Cooper

One of Jamaica’s most prestigious singers, Grub Cooper, who is also leader of the Fab 5 band, had a narrow escape yesterday, following a two-vehicle collision along the Boundbrook roadway in Port Antonio, Portland.

The incident took place shortly after 10:30 a.m. during the staging of the Boston Jerk and Musical festival.

According to police, Cooper was reportedly travelling in a Toyota Rav 4, which was being driven by a female and was heading towards Port Antonio, when the vehicle collided with a Suzuki Vitara travelling in the opposite direction.

Police have theorised that the driver of the Toyota Rav 4 was not familiar with route (roadway), and instead of taking the turn into Port Antonio, ran straight across the road at the intersection at Boundbrook and slammed straight into the Vitara.

serious injuries

Dozens of persons reportedly rushed to the aid of passengers inside both vehicles, as fears mounted as to whether or not there were any serious injuries or fatalities. The bonnet of the Vitara was displaced, and both vehicles were totalled.

And although there were no serious injuries to anyone, Cooper, who was unscathed, was taken to the Port Antonio hospital for observation but was later released.

The Fab 5 band is booked to perform at the Boston Jerk and Music Festival being held at Boston, the home of authentic jerk pork.
