Bail extended for alleged goat thieves

Tuesday, January 06, 2015 | 7:12 PM

ST CATHERINE, Jamaica — Four men charged with unlawful possession of a goat they were reportedly caught transporting in a motorcar, had their bails extended when they appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Bernard Townsend, Chavaughn Panton, Oshane Forbes and Junior Graham all pleaded not guilty to the charge.

It is alleged that a motor car in which the quartet were travelling was stopped in St Catherine and the goat taken from it.

Prior to their bail being extended, Panton told the court that he is the owner of the goat.

“Where you get the goat?” Resident Magistrate Horace Mitchell asked.

“Christiana,” Panton responded.

The investigating officer told the court that when he went to Christiana he saw an open field with several other goats.

“Where is the goat?” Mitchell asked; a query that sent the court into laughter.

The four are to return to court April 7 when the investigation of the matter is expected to be completed.

Bail extended for man on assault rap

Bjorn Burke, Staff Reporter

An elderly man appeared to be the subject of much pain and embarrassment when he allegedly had his dentures damaged following an argument with the defendant, who had his bail extended when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court last Thursday.

Charged with malicious destruction of property and unlawful wounding is Wayne Brown, who pleaded guilty and not guilty, respectively, to the offences.

Damaging

Reports are that on the day of the incident, it is believed that Brown and the complainant got into an argument over an undisclosed sum of money that was reportedly owed to Brown. Things came to a head when Brown allegedly punched the senior in his mouth, damaging his dentures and causing cuts to his mouth.

“So why you punch him?” asked Resident Magistrate Simone Wolfe-Reece.

“Your Honour, him have some money for me, and I can’t get the goods, and I can’t get no money,” replied Brown

“So when you punched him, you got the money?” RM Wolfe-Reece further inquired.

“No Your Honour,” a seemingly dejected Brown replied.

Subsequently, Brown had his bail extended by the sitting magistrate. He was ordered to return to court on Friday. A fingerprint order was also made.

Bail extended for contractor

Christopher Thomas, STAR Writer

WESTERN BUREAU:

A St James man who is accused of stealing approximately $3 million that had been given to him to purchase a house had his bail extended when he appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s (RM) Court yesterday.

Forty-eight-year-old contractor Owen Allen of Barrett Hall in St James is charged with fraudulent conversion. He had his case set for mention on August 5 to allow him time to repay a portion of the money.

It is alleged that the female complainant, who was previously residing overseas, sent funds for Allen to buy a house for her. however, on her arrival in Jamaica, the complainant discovered that the house had not been bought and Allen had reportedly used the money for himself. A report was made to the police and Allen was subsequently arrested and charged.

“Is the file in a state of readiness?” RM Carolyn Tie asked clerk of the court Natalie Malcolm when the case was mentioned yesterday.

“No, your honour, we are anticipating restitution in this matter … the complainant is here with her bag to collect J$1 million,” said Malcolm, drawing a few subdued chuckles from the courtroom.

However, Allen’s attorney Dalton Reid said that while his client had no money on hand, the defendant was expecting some funds to come in for him to repay the complainant.

“Based on what my client has told me, it is going to be next weekend before he gets the money. He anticipates $700,000,” said attorney Reid.

The court was also told that several documents including copies of receipts of transactions between the complainant and the defendant had not yet been submitted for the file to be completed.

“The paperwork in this matter is not ready, so it cannot be heard today. The next date is August 5. sir, your bail is extended until then,” said RM Tie before allowing Allen to leave the courtroom.

Barbados solid waste tax payment deadline extended

travel_tax_400x235_625435960

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Friday July 18, 2014, CMC - Government has waived all payments of the Barbados Municipal Solid Waste Tax for pensioners with property valued under BDS$190,000 (One BDS dollar = 50 US cents) and pushed back the payment deadline for others.

This new tax was announced last year with a sweeping .03 per cent charge on the site value of real estate properties across the island, but there have been widespread complaints about the financial burden it places on residents.

The Barbados Today online newspaper reported that Cabinet agreed to the exclusion of those pensioners at its Tuesday meeting, and in addition decided to cut this tax by half where it applies to agricultural land.

First half of the tax was due in June, but that date was reset to July 28, now Cabinet further decided to push that deadline back to December 31.

“This means that taxpayers can now pay at a more leisurely and affordable rate,” the epaper quoted a senior government official saying.

The Municipal Solid Waste Tax is regarded as levy designed to raise money for a cash-strapped government, and not one applied to garbage collection as there are already other waste disposal taxes.

Since the tax department began sending out payment notices in June, there have been complaints from all sectors of society.

“It is just another tax grab to close a deficit that we have been warning them for six years has become unsustainable and uncontrollable… this tax is hurting people who should not be hurt,” said Mia Mottley, leader of the opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP) at a public rally this week.

“And this tax comes on the heels of 27 other taxes or fees that have been increased or imposed by this government since January 2008,” she added.

The BLP has called for a repeal of the tax, and since Monday has been holding meetings and mobilising the public against the levy.

The party says it will make an announcement on whether street protests will be held during a mass rally scheduled to be held on Sunday.
