Bail extended for alleged goat thieves

Tuesday, January 06, 2015 | 7:12 PM

ST CATHERINE, Jamaica — Four men charged with unlawful possession of a goat they were reportedly caught transporting in a motorcar, had their bails extended when they appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Bernard Townsend, Chavaughn Panton, Oshane Forbes and Junior Graham all pleaded not guilty to the charge.

It is alleged that a motor car in which the quartet were travelling was stopped in St Catherine and the goat taken from it.

Prior to their bail being extended, Panton told the court that he is the owner of the goat.

“Where you get the goat?” Resident Magistrate Horace Mitchell asked.

“Christiana,” Panton responded.

The investigating officer told the court that when he went to Christiana he saw an open field with several other goats.

“Where is the goat?” Mitchell asked; a query that sent the court into laughter.

The four are to return to court April 7 when the investigation of the matter is expected to be completed.

Two alleged cable thieves freed

Rasbert Turner, Star Writer

Two of the three men charged with the theft of LIME cables valued at more than $770,000 were freed when they appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Freed are Rory Sewell, 30-year-old of Moneague, St Ann, and Lehu Gordon, businessman of Linstead, St Catherine.

When the case was mentioned, Ricardo Sewell told the court that he alone was responsible for the theft of the cables.

The other two accused were ordered released while Ricardo Sewell was ordered remanded until October 17 for sentencing.

Allegations are that on September 3, about 4 a.m., police personnel were on patrol in Sligoville, St Catherine.

A Honda Fit motor car driven by Ricardo Sewell with his son Rory was signalled to stop.

Cables found

It was searched and cables were discovered in the trunk of the vehicle.

Investigation revealed that it was the property of LIME.

Rory and Ricardo were subsequently charged with simple larceny while Lehu Gordon was charged with conspiracy.

The police said that Gordon was the person who rented the vehicle.

Attorney-at-law Shantez Stewart represented the freed men.

Fearful - Lime Hall plagued by thieves

BY RENAE DIXON Observer staff reporter dixonr@jamaicaobserver.com

Monday, February 03, 2014

Residents in Lime Hall and surrounding communities in St Ann are calling on the police to begin conducting regular patrols in the area to stem the massive hike in robberies.

The residents, who requested anonymity, said they are living in fear.

“The crime rate in the community is very nasty and needs to be addressed,” one resident told the Jamaica Observer North East, adding that both businesses and families have been affected by the large number of robberies taking place.

Recently, the community was left without Internet and landline service after thieves reportedly cut and stole several cable lines belonging to a communication company. This resulted in several homes, schools and businesses being left without service for days.

The company reportedly lost millions as a result of the vandalism of the lines.

Persons say they are now fearing for their lives in the community as several residents have been attacked and robbed while at their homes and on the streets.

According to residents, the most recent incident occurred on January 20 when a watchman was attacked and severely chopped by robbers at a home near Clamstead, shortly after midnight. Reports are that a group of men armed with machetes entered the premises and attacked the watchman when he failed to meet their demands. He received multiple chop wounds to the body and was rushed to the St Ann’s Bay Hospital before being transferred to a Kingston hospital.

The men, however, broke into a storeroom on the property and made off with several household items.

In another robbery, residents said a house in the Laycock area was robbed. The perpetrators are said to have removed a lock from one of the doors and forced their way inside the house. A sound system and a television set were among several items taken.

The owner was not at home but a caretaker who had gone to a nearby shop returned, just in time, to see the thieves with some of the items in a motorcar while another man was observed running from the house.

Farmers in the area say they are also suffering at the hands of criminals. Last Sunday, one farmer said he lost 19 bunches of plantains to thieves while another farmer lost bananas, plantains, peppers, among other items.

“We would like the relevant authorities to do something tangible to correct the situation,” another resident said.

The robberies, the residents said, have been occurring for some time now.

In one incident last year, gunmen lured a truck operator into the community under the pretext that they needed to purchase cooking gas. When the truck arrived at the location, the driver was robbed of a large sum of cash.

Churches have also not been spared. In one incident, a water tank was stolen from the roof of a church building. A nearby shop and bar suffered a similar fate.

“They cut the lines installed to the drum and let out the water to get free access to steal the drum,” one resident explained.

There have also been reports of the theft of several motor vehicles in the area. This, as thieves recently removed four tyres from a car in the Sandy Grove Area, and several others from a parked truck.

Several female residents are also fearful after two women were held up by masked men in the community. In another incident, residents said the women ran into a nearby home and sought help. The masked men reportedly escaped in nearby bushes.

While the residents are concerned about the crime, some residents believe some people in the community may have information to assist the police in capturing the culprits but are refusing to come forward for fear of being labelled informers.

“People afraid of being called informers,” one resident insisted. “A lot of strange men lurking in the community and we don’t know where they come from,” another resident said.

The man said he believes a revival of the Police Youth Club in the community and the establishment of a Neighbourhood Watch could help to curb the criminal activities in the area.

Gov"t MP accuses JEEP of registering thieves

KINGSTON, Jamaica — People’s National Party (PNP) Member of Parliament, Jolyan Silvera claimed Wednesday that the government’s public employment programme, the Jamaica Emergency Employment Programme (JEEP) is registering and legitimising praedial thieves.

Silvera said that no verification of people who are being registered under the agricultural aspects of the programme was being done and people were getting registered and using the IDs to protect them from prosecution as thieves.“I can tell you that the JEEP programme also registers thieves…when you stop them they can show you a legitimate ID that they are goat farmers, and they go and steal 20 goats, and you cannot do them anything, and this has happened in Gayle, St Mary,” the first-time MP told the Public Administration and Appropriations Committee (PAAC) at Gordon House. He said that the registration process requires persons to go to police stations to be registered, but after that there was no verification to see if they are really farmers.Despite claims by the permanent secretary in the Agriculture Ministry, Donovan Stanberry, and chief executive officer of the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) Lenworth Fulton that there was registration and verification in the process, the Western St Mary MP insisted that he knew better. He said that the lack of verification was legitimising praedial thieves as registered farmers and regularising their criminal activities.“It is bringing them into the system and it is a reality and we have to go back and start…we have to go back to the basics and deal with every ‘farmer’ who says he is a farmer,” Silvera said.Stanberry argued that IDs were only issued after verification, which would make it difficult for non-farmers to be registered. But Silvera insisted that people were being registered “whether they have one root of banana or one tree of coconuts”.“I know, as fact, that you have persons who, literally, don’t go out there, but sign off on everything…and these are the officers of RADA.“It exists, let’s not deny that,” Silvera charged, while suggesting that the whole issue could be thrashed out when the RADA team returns next week to the PAAC.Like our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/jamaicaobserverFollow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/JamaicaObserver
