Friday, January 23, 2015 | 7:55 PM

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Jamaica’s Kaci Fennell is said to be “extremely confident” ahead of the 63rd Annual Miss Universe Pageant that is set for Sunday, January 25 in Doral-Miami, Florida.

OBSERVER ONLINE received word from her management team late Friday that she is “very calm” at the moment.

“Kaci is in a great place right now; she is very calm and extremely confident and we strongly believe that she has what it takes to make history by bringing home the crown on Sunday, a feat that has been eluding our Miss Universe queens over the years,” said a statement from her management team.

Kaci, up to late Friday, was in the number one spot on the Miss Universe Poll FanPage table on Facebook with 306,460 votes, followed by Philippines who was on 233,001. Fans worldwide have helped her by voting through liking and sharing her photo on social media network Facebook, racking up the points.

Her management team said her journey has been a long one with several engagements, which included voice and speech training, sessions on deportment as well as personal training with Spartan Health Club and style consultation with Uzuri International.

Members of her team are expected to join her in Miami ahead of the show Sunday.

Kaci is among 88 competitors who are vying for the Miss Universe crown.

Bennett confident Jamaica Franchise can spark at Nagico Super50 tourney

BY SHERDON COWAN Observer staff reporter

Thursday, January 15, 2015

HEAD coach of the Jamaica Franchise cricket team Junior Bennett is confident that the team will be able to get the job done in the upcoming Nagico Super50 tournament in Trinidad & Tobago, despite fielding five debutants in the 14-man squad.

The coach also made it clear that the limited-overs team is in a rebuilding phase.

“I think we will give a good account of ourselves; we have worked extremely hard during our preparation phase, so it’s just for us to go out there now and execute efficiently,” he told the Jamaica Observer before the team’s departure from Sabina Park to the Norman Manley International Airport yesterday.

“Our one-day team is in transition at the moment, so we have five debutants in the squad right now. I am just hoping that they go out there, play some good, consistent cricket right throughout [and] once our cricket continues to improve I am happy about that. But I have no doubt in the abilities of these youngsters,” he said.

The five debutants included in the Nikita Miller-led squad, which departed the island yesterday en route to the twin-isle republic, are Damion Jacobs, Dennis Bulli, Marquino Mindley, Derval Green and Gavon Brown. The squad is completed by John Campbell, Horace Miller, Nkrumah Bonner, David Bernard, Tamar Lambert, Andre McCarthy, Jermaine Blackwood and Danza Hyatt, who makes a long-awaited return.

The Jamaicans will play from Group B alongside Trinidad & Tobago, the Leeward Island Hurricanes and the West Indies Under-19. They will open their account against the Leeward Island Hurricanes in Port of Spain tomorrow.

“First thing we need to do is just try to focus on making the semi-finals, because once we make the final four we are definitely on our way,” said the veteran coach.

“We intend to take it match by match…go out there and play good, competitive cricket. The bowling unit is in good form, so hopefully our batting will come to the fore and get good team totals.

“We won’t rely on any one player. What I do want is a good team effort from everyone. Once everyone goes out there and improves their cricket and make a concerted effort…I will be pleased with that,” he added.

Meanwhile, Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) representative Bulli expressed his delight at the opportunity.

“I have been waiting for this a very long time. I have been training very hard, working with the coach and the team. So I am prepared and ready to go,” he told the Jamaica Observer.

The all-rounder, who bowls left-arm unorthodox, will be expected to play a significant role in the spin department.

“I heard that the wickets in Trinidad spin a lot and that will suit my kind of bowling, because naturally, I spin the ball big, so I am looking to contribute a lot in helping Jamaica win the tournament. I also intend to play my part with the bat at any given time,” he explained.

Hughes confident

By Howard Walker Observer senior reporter walkerh@jamaicaobserver.com

Tuesday, January 28, 2014

Last year the name Zharnel Hughes was not widely known until he defeated two of the island’s most promising youngsters — Jazeel Murphy and Jevaughn Minzie — at the Carifta Games in the 100m.

The lanky sprinter from Anguilla won in 10.44 seconds to Murphy’s 10.48 in March, then returned in August and repeated his dominance over Jamaica’s prodigy at the Pan Am Junior Championships, lowering his time 10.31 seconds. Murphy finished fourth in 10.46 seconds.

Hughes, 18, the unknown sprinter, had become the fastest youngster in the region, encompassing the Caribbean and the Americas.

He has become a targeted man after making his seasonal debut, and then easily dispatching another of Jamaica’s most promising runners in Jaheel Hyde — the 110m hurdles World Youth Champion — in the 400m last Saturday.

Hughes, drawn in lane one and Hyde in lane six, utilised his 100m speed and covered the field quite comfortably before cruising home in 48.80. Hyde, who did 46.63 at Champs last year, finished second in 49.16 seconds.

“I know everybody is targeting me right now, but if they keep on targeting me, they might end up messing up their events. So, I will just tell them keep focussing on what they have to do and not on me,” Hughes told the Jamaica Observer.

“It was a great experience. I just came out here with a race plan today…despite the lane that I got, which was lane one, I got out real hard, just went in at the back stretch and closed up on the guys. I used one of the guys as a target and when he kicked, I just waited for a while then kicked afterwards. Overall the race was great,” Hughes explained.

“I am pleased with my performance. I am pleased with the time because I am not a 400m guy, so I am thankful for it,” he added.

The talented youngster from Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School in Anguilla in the Leeward Islands, with a population of approximately 14,000, won a scholarship to attend the IAAF’s Regional High Performance Training Centre (HPTC) in Kingston.

Hughes, who has been training with the likes of Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake and Warren Weir at Racers Track Club, will also wear the purple and white jersey of Kingston College (KC) this season.

“At KC it is just amazing man,” he said with a smile on his face. “The guys… they gave me some nicknames there, I wonder where they get them. Being at KC is just an enjoyable experience and I am enjoying myself representing the school. So, I am looking forward to the upcoming events.”

With no Murphy around, Hughes is expected to renew his battle with Minzie of Bog Walk and the impressive Calabar High pair of Javon Francis and Michael O’Hara, setting the stage for some enticing races.

“I am preparing myself really good. I can tell you that I feel as if I got much stronger this year, so when the time comes to run you will see what happens,” said a confident Hughes.

PNP, JLP confident of victory in today"s by-election

BOTH the governing People’s National Party (PNP) and the Opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) are confident of winning today’s by-election in the Cassia Park Division of the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation (KSAC).

Just over 10,000 people are eligible to participate in the poll triggered by the vacancy created by the death of PNP Councillor Cynthia Burrell on May 30. Cassia Park is one of three divisions in Finance Minister Dr Peter Phillips’ East Central St Andrew constituency.Burrell’s daughter, Sheryn Bromfield, will square off against the former three-time councillor for the division, Beverly Prince, in what is expected to be a close poll.Yesterday, Deputy General Secretary Julian Robinson told the Jamaica Observer that the party is confident of retaining the seat, based on the “goodwill” created by Burrell in the division, and the fact that she groomed her daughter to carry on her work.“Based on the work done by Mrs Burrell in the constituency in the 16 months she had been there as councillor, including improvements to the infrastructure, there is a tremendous amount of goodwill on the ground for her, and based on the foundation she has built we are confident that we will retain the seat,” Robinson said. But JLP Deputy Leader Desmond McKenzie said that although “the PNP is using everything” at its disposal to retain the seat, the JLP is “pretty, pretty confident that we will win back the seat”.“We have a candidate with a personal touch and a special appeal which has enabled her to win this division on three occasions in the past. She knows the people and they appreciate her work. We believe that the work the party has done and the support she is getting from the people, both JLP and PNP, will be enough to regain the seat,” said McKenzie, a former mayor of Kingston.Prince represented the Cassia Park Division as the only JLP councillor between 1998 and 2012. However, after losing to Phillips in the general election of December 2011, she switched to the much harder Hagley Park Division, where she lost, while the JLP’s Joel Levy also lost the Cassia Park division by 31 votes. The loss was the first for the JLP in 12 years.Meanwhile, in the 2012 local government election, only 2,206, or 22 per cent, of the 10,129 voters in the division cast their ballots. However, a much larger turnout is expected today given the importance.(L-R) BROMFIELD… riding on the goodwill created by her late mother in the division. PRINCE… previously won in the division three times for the Jamaica Labour Party

Spurs confident of signing Soldado

Tottenham Hotspur are working on a deal to sign 28-year-old Valencia striker Roberto Soldado.

Negotiations between the clubs are progressing well and although some details still have to be agreed, Spurs are confident of completing a deal for the Spain international.

Soldado scored 30 goals in 46 La Liga appearances last season.

Soldado helped Spain reach the final of the Confederations Cup last month, scoring in the group win over Uruguay. He was an unused substitute in the final as Spain lost 3-0 to hosts Brazil.

The former Real Madrid, Osasuna and Getafe player would become Tottenham’s third summer acquisition.

Manager Andre Villas-Boas has already signed midfielder Paulinho from Corinthians and winger Nacer Chadli from FC Twente.

It is understood Soldado’s potential transfer will have no bearing on the future of Spurs forward Gareth Bale, who has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid.

Tottenham previously had a strong interest in Belgian striker Christian Benteke before he decided to sign a new contract with Aston Villa.
