Manchester United 3-1 Newcastle United

by Ian WHITTELL

Friday, December 26, 2014

Wayne Rooney scored twice as Manchester United rewarded manager Louis van Gaal’s decision to grant his players Christmas Day off by beating Newcastle United 3-1 on Friday.

Rooney, relishing the deeper midfield role which he has been assigned recently, effectively decided the contest with two lethal finishes and set up a third goal for Robin van Persie in the second half.

But although United won for the 18th time in their last 21 Boxing Day outings, they were obliged to survive a spirited opening quarter to the match from Alan Pardew’s visitors.

Rooney settled nerves with an excellently worked 23rd-minute opener, but United had lived dangerously up to that point, despite enjoying a glut of possession.

The visitors looked dangerous on the counter-attack and United were fortunate to avoid conceding a penalty when Juan Mata appeared to clip the heels of Yoan Gouffran, sending the Newcastle man clattering to the ground.

Just six minutes later, United were indebted to the ever-impressive David de Gea as the Spanish goalkeeper flew to his right to keep out a magnificent 25-yard shot from Daryl Janmaat, who had been set up by Newcastle’s teenage debutant Adam Armstrong.

The 17-year-old Armstrong was an unwitting accomplice to the opening goal, showing brilliant pace to beat Paddy McNair but then wasting possession by shooting directly at the legs of a United defender.

It proved a costly decision by the teenager as Rooney broke upfield and squared the ball for Mata, who, in turn, launched an accurate pass into the area for Radamel Falcao.

The Colombian forward seemed poised to shoot from a tight angle, but instead squared the ball for Rooney to convert into a gaping goal.

It was an impressive assist from Falcao, who could have single-handedly put the game beyond Newcastle in the first half, given the amount of half-chances that came his way.

On 13 minutes, he should have done better from Ashley Young’s left-wing cross, appearing to duck out of the way of the winger’s fiercely hit centre.

Then, shortly after United had taken the lead, the on-loan Monaco striker did connect with a cross from Young, only to glance his header just wide of the far post.

Rooney, however, did not need a second invitation to double United’s lead after 36 minutes with another goal orchestrated by a magnificent Mata pass.

After Falcao won the ball back, Phil Jones found Mata, who waited for Rooney to arrive and slipped through a perfect assist for the England captain, who made no mistake with a clinical 12-yard finish.

It did not take long for United to punish Newcastle further in the second half, with Rooney this time the provider.

He advanced, paused, and then lifted an inviting pass forward for Van Persie, who steered a header past the dive of Jak Alnwick.

Not for the first time, a brilliant Young cross was wasted as Van Persie and Falcao both failed to make a connection.

Meanwhile, Rooney, seeking a hat-trick, went close with a 19-yard free-kick that soared over the wall and dipped onto the roof of the Newcastle goal.

Van Persie also spurned a glorious chance, completely mis-kicking with an attempted volley, while Ayoze Perez, one of the few bright points on the day for Newcastle, forced De Gea into a rare piece of action, low at the foot of his near post, as the game wore down.

The visitors’ consolation finally came, five minutes from time, after Jones needlessly tripped Jack Colback and substitute Papiss Cisse convincingly beat De Gea with a penalty into the top-right corner.

Chelsea, City, United consolidate positions in BPL

LONDON, England (AFP) — Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United showed their rivals no seasonal cheer yesterday as they consolidated their positions in the Premier League table with one-sided Boxing Day victories.

Leaders Chelsea set the tone by overcoming West Ham United 2-0. City followed suit with a 3-1 success at West Bromwich Albion and United kept pace by beating Newcastle United 3-1, with Wayne Rooney scoring twice and making one.

Chelsea continue to lead City by three points, with United seven points further back, while West Ham’s loss allowed Southampton, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Swansea City and Liverpool to make up ground in the race for the top four.

Goals in each half from John Terry and Diego Costa — his 13th of the campaign — earned Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea a one-sided home win over West Ham, who slipped to fifth.

West Ham were expected to provide a stern test after a run of five games without defeat, but despite Morgan Amalfitano hitting the post late on, Sam Allardyce’s team were well beaten in what was the London rivals’ 100th encounter.

“We played a very good game against a very difficult opponent. When we scored, we had the game always under control,” Mourinho told Sky Sports.

“I am really happy. We are doing very well.”

City were again without injured strikers Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko at a snow-splattered Hawthorns, but they made short work of West Brom regardless to register a ninth consecutive victory.

Fernando punished an error by goalkeeper Ben Foster to put City ahead in the eighth minute, with a Yaya Toure penalty and a David Silva goal extending the visitors’ lead before Brown Ideye scored a late consolation.

“I am very pleased with the performance,” said City manager Manuel Pellegrini.

“It was very difficult to play, especially in the second half. In the first 45 minutes, both teams could play and we did very well and scored three goals. In the second half, it was more difficult.”

Manchester United returned to winning ways following last weekend’s 1-1 draw at Aston Villa by sinking Newcastle at Old Trafford.

Rooney broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute, tapping in after a sliding Radamel Falcao steered Juan Mata’s pass across goal, and added a second goal 13 minutes later with an assured finish from Mata’s pass.

The United captain, who played in midfield again, teed up Robin van Persie to head home the hosts’ third eight minutes into the second half, before Papiss Cisse replied with an excellent late penalty.

“We make progress in every game, but we are also doing bad things in every game and we have to improve that,” United manager Louis van Gaal told BT Sport.

“But I’m satisfied because we are dominating a lot of games. We’re not always winning, but that is coming.”

Southampton moved into the top four, three points below United, by winning 3-1 at Crystal Palace, who slipped into the relegation zone.

Sadio Mane rounded Allan McGregor to put the visitors ahead in the 17th minute, and quick-fire goals by defenders Ryan Bertrand and Toby Alderweireld made the game safe before Scott Dann scored late on.

Arsenal also exploited West Ham’s defeat by edging Queens Park Rangers 2-1, despite losing Olivier Giroud to a second-half red card.

Alexis Sanchez saw an early penalty saved by Rob Green, but atoned by heading in Kieran Gibbs’s drilled cross in the 37th minute.

Giroud was sent off for lowering his head into Nedum Onuoha’s face early in the second period, but Sanchez teed up Tomas Rosicky to make it 2-0 before Charlie Austin replied with a 79th-minute penalty.

“It was a deserved red card,” said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. “Olivier is a guy who, when he makes mistakes, he stands up and admits it.”

Tottenham remain level on points with Arsenal, two points below the top four, after winning 2-1 at bottom club Leicester City.

Christian Eriksen’s 71st-minute free-kick secured victory after Leonardo Ulloa had cancelled out Harry Kane’s first-minute opener for Spurs.

Swansea climbed as well, moving to within four points of the Champions League places by beating Villa 1-0 thanks to Gylfi Sigurdsson’s curling 13th-minute free kick.

Liverpool ended a run of three games without victory by winning 1-0 at Burnley through Raheem Sterling’s first league goal since September.

Liverpool lost goalkeeper Brad Jones to injury, which saw the dropped Simon Mignolet summoned from the bench, and Merseyside rivals Everton also lost their goalkeeper in a 1-0 defeat at home to Stoke City.

Tim Howard was forced off in the second half at Goodison Park, after Bojan Krkic had scored the game’s only goal from the penalty spot in the 38th minute.

In the day’s other game, Gaston Ramirez scored one and made another as Hull City escaped from the bottom three by coming from behind to win 3-1 at Sunderland.

Adam Johnson put Sunderland ahead in the first minute, but Ramirez equalised with a speculative shot and then teed up James Chester before Nikica Jelavic added a third in injury time.

Chelsea 2-0 West Ham United

by Jon WEST

Friday, December 26, 2014

Chelsea showed why they are the Premier League leaders with a comprehensive 2-0 dismissal of London neighbours West Ham United in Friday’s early Boxing Day fixture.

John Terry and Diego Costa were the men on target as Jose Mourinho’s side moved six points ahead of second-place Manchester City, who are in action later in the day.

West Ham had begun the day in fourth place, but the gulf in class between the two teams was apparent throughout, with Chelsea’s Eden Hazard the game’s most eye-catching performer.

Andy Carroll volleyed wide in the first minute as West Ham — criticised by Mourinho for their defensive tactics in the 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge last season — indicated they might be more ambitious this time.

There was a much better chance for Chelsea soon after when the West Ham defence failed to deal with a cross from Willian that found Oscar, but the recalled Brazilian blasted over with only goalkeeper Adrian to beat.

Gary Cahill then headed over from a delivery into the box by fellow centre-back Terry as Chelsea continued to dominate the opening exchanges.

There was a nervous moment for the visitors when Hazard pushed the ball between Winston Reid’s legs and went down on the edge of the box when the defender made contact, but referee Michael Oliver allowed play to continue.

Enner Valencia fired a West Ham free-kick over, but Adrian was soon required to make a save at the other end as Cahill let fly from close range at the near post.

James Collins was the first man into the book for a tackle on Costa in full flight, despite the defender rightly claiming he had played the ball.

Oscar had previously fired one wide, so it was Cesc Fabregas who took the free-kick, which he fired at Adrian.

Willian did the same from open play as Chelsea continued to exert immense pressure on the West Ham defence, and this time Adrian could only parry.

A goal was coming and it was Terry who provided it in the 31st minute, side-footing home from a couple of yards out after Costa had headed on a Fabregas corner.

Chelsea continued to move the ball about speedily and Adrian had to dive to keep out a low drive from defensive midfielder Nemanja Matic before Costa’s deflected effort spun just wide.

Tempers flared just before half-time when West Ham’s players reacted angrily to what appeared to be a dive inside the area by Branislav Ivanovic, who went to ground near Carroll.

West Ham began the second half with a flurry of activity, but could not fashion a clear chance, and it was not long before Adrian had to parry a fierce drive from Hazard that almost knocked him off his feet.

The visitors made a double change just before the hour mark, with Carroll and Mark Noble replaced by Diafra Sakho and Alex Song, but Chelsea’s response was a second goal.

West Ham lost possession on the half-way line, Hazard found Costa, and the striker found the bottom-right corner despite the presence of three defenders to register his 13th effort of the campaign.

Costa then volleyed a difficult chance wide after goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who had hardly been involved, had to gather at the feet of Sakho at the other end.

Adrian continued to prevent a rout, tipping over an Oscar free-kick and thwarting Matic from the ensuing corner.

A chance to get West Ham back in the game came Valencia’s way 12 minutes before the end, but the Ecuador forward lashed his shot wide from an inviting position in the box and it was a similar story when substitute Morgan Amalfitano headed wide.

There was still time for Amalfitano to spurn an even better chance, the midfielder hitting the post after darting between Cahill and Terry.

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE WRAP - Chelsea preserve lead, Rooney off in United win

Saturday, September 27, 2014 | 1:38 PM

LONDON, England (AFP) – Premier League leaders Chelsea conserved their three-point advantage by beating Aston Villa 3-0 on Saturday, while Wayne Rooney was sent off as Manchester United edged West Ham United.

Having drawn 1-1 at champions Manchester City last weekend, Chelsea continued their unbeaten start to the season with a straightforward win over Villa at Stamford Bridge.

Oscar gave Chelsea the lead in the seventh minute when he steered home a cut-back from Brazilian countryman Willian, who had seen his initial shot parried by Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan.

Diego Costa added a second goal just before the hour, glancing a header past Guzan from Cesar Azpilicueta’s cross to take his tally to eight goals in his first six Premier League games.

The Brazil-born Spain striker also played a role in Chelsea’s third goal with a shot that Guzan could only push straight at Villa defender Aly Cissokho, enabling Willian to stab home from close range.

“Even during the period the game was 1-0, when it could be open, it was always closed because we controlled the game,” said Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho.

“When we weren’t dangerous, we kept the ball. The result was a consequence of our dominance.”

Southampton remain Chelsea’s closest rivals after winning 2-1 at home to Queens Park Rangers, with Ryan Bertrand and Graziano Pelle finding the net either side of a Charlie Austin effort.

United climbed six places to seventh, eight points below Chelsea, after seeing off West Ham 2-1 at Old Trafford, but their victory was overshadowed by the red card shown to captain Rooney for violent conduct.

Injury problems forced United manager Louis van Gaal to give a debut to 19-year-old centre-back Paddy McNair.

But they took a fifth-minute lead when Rooney swept home Rafael da Silva’s cross to become the outright third-highest scorer in Premier League history with 176 goals; one more than Thierry Henry.

Radamel Falcao set up Robin van Persie to rattle in United’s second goal mid-way through the first half, but Diafra Sakho reduced the arrears for West Ham by nodding in after Enner Valencia’s header hit the bar.

Rooney was shown a straight red card in the 59th minute for kicking out at the fleeing Stewart Downing — his first club dismissal since March 2009 — but United’s 10 men held on to secure victory.

“I call it a professional foul,” said Van Gaal. “I’ve seen them a lot of times, but the referee makes another decision. But you can’t change it.”

Meanwhile, Manchester City withstood a fightback by Hull City to record a 4-2 win at the KC Stadium that saw them climb to third place.

With Willy Caballero preferred to Joe Hart in goal by City manager Manuel Pellegrini, the visitors went 2-0 up through a hooked finish from Sergio Aguero and a fine 22-yard strike by Edin Dzeko.

However, a pair of blunders by City’s new centre-back Eliaquim Mangala allowed Hull back into the game.

The France international headed Liam Rosenior’s cross into his own net in the 21st minute and then conceded a penalty with a high boot on Abel Hernandez, who converted from 12 yards to level the scores.

But after Yaya Toure had hit the post, David Silva released Dzeko to restore City’s lead in the the 68th minute before substitute Frank Lampard side-footed in his fourth goal in three games late on.

Earlier, Everton captain Phil Jagielka scored a sensational 92nd-minute equaliser to earn his team a 1-1 draw against derby rivals Liverpool at Anfield.

Steven Gerrard had put Liverpool ahead with a second-half free-kick, but he was upstaged in injury time when his former England colleague Jagielka drove an exquisite half-volley into the top-right corner from 25 yards.

“It has been a frustrating season so far, so to go 1-0 down and keep knocking at the door showed tremendous character. We need to keep showing character,” Jagielka told BT Sport.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, whose side are without a win in three league games, said: “We were clearly the dominant side in the game, but sometimes you don’t get what you deserve in football.”

Quick-fire second-half goals from Fraizer Campbell and Mile Jedinak gave Crystal Palace a 2-0 win at home to Leicester City, while Angel Rangel was sent off for two yellow cards as Swansea City drew 0-0 at Sunderland.

Saturday’s action concluded with Arsenal again dropping pionts following a 1-1 draw in another local derby against Tottenham Hotspur.

For the Caribbean, a united front is key to weathering climate change

PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten, Thursday July 3, 2014, IPS - As the costs of climate change continue to mount, officials with the Commonwealth grouping say it is vital that Small Island Developing States (SIDS) stick together on issues such as per capita income classification.Deputy Commonwealth Secretary General (Economic and Social Development) Deodat Maharaj told IPS the classification affects the ability of countries like Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada and others to access financing from the international financial institutions.

“To my mind, the international system has to take special consideration of countries such as Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada and others,” he said.

“The example I like to use is the example of Grenada. You would recall Hurricane Ivan about 10 years ago. It damaged about 70 percent of the housing stock in Grenada. It cost a billion U.S. dollars in damages, equivalent to two years GDP.

“So the countries in the Caribbean can move from high income or middle income to almost zero income with an economic shock or natural disaster,” Maharaj added.

Maharaj, whose appointment took effect earlier this year, said the Commonwealth is preparing “an analytical framework based on research, a case, so that countries such as Grenada when there is a natural disaster their international debt obligation for a particular period of time will be suspended so that they don’t have to continue to pay their debt when it is that they have suffered a natural disaster.”

On the issue of collaboration, one of only three female prime ministers in the Caribbean has reaffirmed her country’s commitment to dealing with climate change and all the issues associated with the global phenomena.

“I would like to reaffirm my strong belief in collaboration with other nations,” Sarah Wescot-Williams, the prime minister of St. Maarten, told IPS.

“Economic issues have forced us to look at ways and means of getting together and we are working collaboratively with other Caribbean nations to mitigate the effects of climate change as well as social issues of unemployment, crime and health.”

St. Maarten recently developed and approved its National Energy Policy “and as such we have very specific goals and objectives to reach by 2020 in terms of reduction and promoting alternative, new green ideas, new green products,” Wescot-Williams explained.

She reiterated a point made while addressing regional leaders recently. “I told them we should not only look out for the bigger impacts of climate change or look at those developments as something that is far from us, far from our homes, but look at small things like beach erosion, something that St. Maarten is seeing.

“A report has been issued not very long ago indicating that unless specific measures are taken, a great part of what is now land will no longer be as far as the smaller islands, including St. Maarten, are concerned.”

How they are ranked by financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank is a major issue for Caribbean countries.

Camillo Gonsalves, a former ambassador to the United Nations, says it affects these countries’ ability to secure the required funding to effectively deal with climate change.

He noted that most Caribbean countries are ranked as middle-income countries, and using that metric alone makes his country, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, with its one-billion-dollar Gross Domestic Product (GDP), “richer than China”.

“If that is the metric by which we determine economic health and access to concessionary financing, and our ability to borrow ourselves out of a crisis or to spend ourselves out of a crisis, it is clearly a flawed measure,” he said.

He noted that within three hours last Christmas Eve, a trough system left damage and loss in St. Vincent equal to 17 percent of GDP, while the country also suffered natural disasters in 2010, and 2011 – the loss and damage from each of which was in double digits.

This, however, is the measure by which the World Bank, the IMF determine the economic strength of Caribbean countries, Gonsalves said, adding that these international institutions do not consider the region’s vulnerabilities.

“The Caribbean small island developing states are among the most heavily indebted states in the world,” Gonsalves said, noting that the debt-to-GDP ratio in the region ranges from 20 percent in Haiti – which received significant debt forgiveness after the 2010 earthquake – to 139 percent in Jamaica, with St. Kitts and Nevis and Grenada at 105 and 115 per cent, respectively, even as the European Union has set itself a debt-to-GDP ratio of 65 per cent.

“If your debt-to-GDP ratio is 139 percent and you are struck by a natural disaster… how do you borrow yourself out of that crisis? Where do you find money immediately to build your roads, your houses, your bridges, your hospitals that have been damaged? How can you set money aside in preparation for the next climate event if you have a debt to GDP ratio of over 100 per cent or approaching 100 per cent, and your debt servicing charges are that high?” Gonsalves said.

Agreeing with Wescot-Williams and Maharaj that there is strength in unity, Gonsalves, who serves as foreign affairs minister for St. Vincent and the Grenadines, said the upcoming Third United Nations Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in Samoa is an ideal opportunity for regional countries to do more than just talk about collaboration.

“The issue of how we are ranked and classified has to be rectified – not addressed, not flagged, not considered. It has to be rectified in Samoa. That has to be one of our prime objectives going into this conference,” he said.

The Samoa conference will be held from Sep. 1-4 under the theme “The Sustainable Development of Small Island States Through Genuine and Durable Partnerships”.

It will seek to assess progress and remaining gaps; renew political commitment by focusing on practical and pragmatic actions for further implementation; identify new and emerging challenges and opportunities for the sustainable development of SIDS and means of addressing them; and identify priorities for the sustainable development of SIDS to be considered in the elaboration of the post-2015 U.N. development agenda.

Maharaj said “one big challenge” for his organisation is the advancement of the interest of small states.

“When I think about the Caribbean and I think about development…we need to think about development not only in terms of five years, 10 years or 15 years,” he said.

“I would like to think about and imagine what will the Caribbean be in the year 2050 at the time when our grand- and great-grandchildren will be around and many of us won’t be here,” Maharaj added.
