Roger Clarke hailed as regional giant

Roger Clarke

Christopher Serju, Star Writer

The Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) has paid tribute to late agriculture minister, Roger Clarke, citing his efforts especially to promote regional agriculture as a major platform for developing Caribbean economies.

Clarke who died on August 28 will be laid to rest today in a family plot in Westmoreland, following an official funeral at the St George’s Anglican Church, Savanna-la-mar.

In a release yesterday, Dr Arlington Chesney, executive director of CARDI recalled that Clarke, who was member of parliament for Central Westmoreland at the time of his death, had a vision for agriculture that extended well beyond the shores of Jamaica.

vibrant economy

“He recognised that a sustainable agricultural sector was critical to the region having a vibrant economy and further, that the region’s agriculture could best be served if each nation were to support and/or harmonise with each other’s actions,” Dr. Chesney recounted.

He further said, “It is that belief in the importance of regional unity that made him by far the minister that has contributed the most to governance of the sector in the region and its major activities. He recognised the need to fill the void when the Standing Committee of Ministers of Agriculture was disbanded. He moved to support the creation of the Forum of Ministers.”

The CARDI executive director said Clarke gave many years of unflinching and dedicated support to CARDI, both as member and chairman of the Institute’s Board of Governors.

“As we celebrate the life of this ultimate friend of regional agriculture, on behalf of the directors, management and staff of CARDI and on my own behalf, I convey our deepest condolences to the widow, children, relatives and numerous friends of our beloved Minister Roger Clarke,” Dr Chesney said.

Jamaica wins 1st round U19 regional cricket match

Odane McCatty was solid as Jamaica chased 202 to beat Barbados by six wickets on the final day of their three-day WICB under-19 match in Guyana.

Victory seemed in the balance after two early losses left the team on 87-3 at lunch. However, McCatty’s unbeaten 81 helped to pilot the Jamaicans comfortably home.

Abhaijai Mansingh was with him on 11 as the side reached 205-4. Romaine Morris, 70, was Jamaica’s other chief scorer.

In the other first round matches, the Windward Islands beat Trinidad and Tobago by an innings and 21 runs while host Guyana and Leeward Islands played to a draw.

Winning start for Jamaica in Regional U-15 tournament

A fourth wicket stand of 128 between Raewin Senior, 69, and Dominik Samuels, 54, enabled Jamaica’s Under 15 cricketers to begin their quest for the WICB title with an exciting three wicket win over Barbados at Up Park Camp.

It was the visitors who took first strike and posted 219-8 off 50 overs as Joshua Corbin top scored with 43. He received good support from Jadan Jones, 33, Kirkland Brathwaite, 26 not out, and Joshua Bishop, 23. Skipper Raewin Senior took 3-38 to be the pick of the Jamaican bowlers.

In their reply, the Jamaicans were reeling at 18-3 off two overs. Senior and Samuels led the fightback with a run-a-ball 128 run partnership. Senior cracked two sixes and eight fours in his knock of 69, while Samuels hit six fours in his 54.

Both batsmen went with the score on 150. Andre McCarthy then scored 34, and Byron Brown, 26 not out, as the Jamaicans reached their target, losing 7 wickets off 47.2 overs.

The boys from Trinidad and Tobago began their title defence on a winning note, after a six wicket victory over the Windward Islands, with five overs to spare at Kensington Park, while Guyana recorded an emphatic 113 run victory over the Leeward Islands.

Cooperative agreement for regional risk reduction signed

The first international seminar for the Greater Caribbean’s “CARIB RISK CLUSTER” recently ended in Martinique with the signing of a cooperative agreement to address risk reduction across the region.

The meeting addressed the many aspects of risk reduction, including the prevention and management of disaster risks facing the Caribbean Basin and how to protect human lives and safeguard socio-economic development.

About 150 delegates and officials from seven Caribbean countries and territories: Barbados, Dominica, Jamaica, Martinique, St. Lucia, St. Martin and Trinidad and Tobago, focused on thematic areas during the three-day meeting, addressing meteorological risks, town and country planning, health and epidemic risks, and public information services.

The final declaration reiterated a commitment to regional cooperation through the “CARIB RISK CLUSTER”, which was established in 2011 by the General Council of Martinique.

Co-financed by the European Union through the INTERREG CARAIBES IV Programme, the project, originally entitled “Caribbean Cluster on natural risks and risks from the sea,” seeks to coordinate and strengthen risk management policies in the region.

Delegates agreed to leverage the combined efforts of the Caribbean Meteorological Organization (CMO), the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (OPDEM), and the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA).

This resulted in the signing of an agreement between the General Council of Martinique, represented by its President Mrs. Josette Martin, and Ronald Jackson, CDEMA’s Executive Director.

Mrs. Manin, in her capacity as the head of “CARIB RISK CLUSTER”, thanked the participants of the seminar and confirmed her personal and team’s support to pursue a successful completion of this ambitious and important regional project.

Guyana celebrates Independence - country committed to regional unity

Guyana’s President Donald Ramotar says his country must continue to take the lead in promoting regional unity and work within the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to strengthen the bonds of integration.

In his message to mark Guyana’s 48th anniversary of independence on Monday, Ramotar said the country is marking the milestone of its political history in a world that has grown more complex, more interconnected, but, unfortunately, one which still remains very unequal between the developing South and the developed North.“International relations today are still dominated and determined by a handful of rich countries.  Many of the institutions established, particularly the international financial institutions mostly geared to serve the interest of the most rich and powerful countries.”He said developing countries have to manage the affairs of their states in a great disadvantageous situation and this is reflected in the growing inequality in relation to access to resources and the huge income gap between the rich and poor countries of the world.Ramotar said that the richest 85 persons in the world are worth more than the poorest 3.5 billion persons and that almost a half of the world’s wealth is owned by just one per cent of the population.“The struggle, therefore, for socio-economic justice and a more equitable world, continues.  One of the major issues is the need to democratise international relations. It is patently evident that the vast majority of countries in the world and by extension the peoples of those countries do not have enough influence on international politics and economics.”Ramotar said the situation demands that Guyana continues to build greater solidarity among the developing world while it works in alliance with those developed countries interested in genuine partnership.

Policy makers urged to close gender gap in regional trade, business

Regional trade policymakers called for further sensitisation and education on “gender mainstreaming” in their respective territories, as they came to the end of Day 2 of the Caribbean Development Bank’s seminar on Gender Mainstreaming in Caribbean Trade Policies and Programmes, in Barbados.

Delegates from across the region, looked at recent statistics, challenges and best practices relating to gender equality and mainstreaming in trade and commerce. The day’s presentations allowed the trade experts to assess the situation in their respective territories, in respect of gender mainstreaming, and to identify possible needs and next steps in the way forward.

ITC challenge

Meg Jones, Senior Officer, Millenium Development Goals at the International Trade Centre (ITC), who was lead facilitator for the discussions, charged the participants to use the information they receive during the CDB seminar, to guide their work and decisions going forward in the area of trade in their respective countries.

Jones emphasised the importance of implementing Gender-Sensitive Value Chain Analyses as one way of ensuring gender mainstreaming in trade policy development. This method includes an examination of gender roles at each step required to bring a product/service from conception to consumption. This approach is expected to effectively identify where there are gender inequalities and where investment in training is really needed in the given process.

On the cusp

Denise Noel-De Bique, Gender Equality Advisor at the CDB, said the region is on the cusp of change linked to global debates to inform a new sustainable development agenda. She told the delegates, “This workshop is a signal moment in advancing CDB’s work in building awareness and positioning policy makers for integrating gender in the context of trade.  We look forward to continuing to build on this at the national level to further this transformative process.”

The workshop examined research data provided by Professor Miguel Carillo of the Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business in Trinidad and Tobago.

Trade/business gender gap

Using the Global Enterpeneurship Monitor (GEM), Professor Carillo disclosed that the most recent international data confirms that there is still a gender gap worldwide in the area of trade and business. He explained that women entrepeneurs struggle at the point of transforming their businesses from the early stages into established companies.

Professor Carillo told the participants that, while women are more inclined to start a business as a means of providing for their families, they showed less confidence than men in their capacity to succeed in business.

The Caribbean Policy Development Centre (CPDC) also called for greater input from a wide range of stakeholders in coming up with effective trade policy.

Shantal Munro-Knight, CPDC’s representative at the seminar,  said certain groups in society are still not given the space for effective participation in stakeholder engagement and as a result, the importance of the gender perspective is not always fully understood. According to her, there is lack of coherence between trade and economic policy and social development policy in the region.

“Trade policy cannot be simply (decided and) announced by governments. Policy must be a clear and thought-out process,” Munro Knight said.

Ugandan Model

Using the Ugandan model, the ITC’s Jeanette Sutherland then discussed critical factors needed to ensure a gender-sensitive export strategy.

The four-day seminar, co-hosted by the CDB and ITC, was designed to increase awareness of the value of mainstreaming gender into the Caribbean’s trade and economic development agenda, and to improve participants’ gender mainstreaming skills. The event targeted senior policy makers from the Ministry of Trade and operational staff from other trade support institutions and agencies within CARIFORUM Member States.

The seminar, which started on June 16, was scheduled to end on Thursday.

BlackBerry hires Speyside for regional public relations

Business

Saturday, August 03, 2013

FOLLOWING a global review of its public relations support, BlackBerry has appointed Speyside Corporate Relations as its public relations agency across Latin America and the Caribbean. The appointment is part of a new integrated global PR solution, with Speyside working alongside long-time partners Text100 and APCO who will support the company across North America, Asia Pacific, and Europe Middle East & Africa. The Speyside team will provide support in all markets across Latin America & the Caribbean, working through teams on-the-ground in eight countries. The principal focus of the team will be to further enhance journalist and blogger relationships and help communicate around BlackBerry’s new products across the region.Commenting on the appointment, Speyside CEO Ian Herbison stated, “We are delighted to be part of this global team, working with BlackBerry across Latin America and the Caribbean to help the company communicate its exciting new products and its vision for mobile computing.”Headquartered in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Speyside Corporate Relations is a Latin American-focused corporate, financial and government relations consultancy operating across the region. It was founded in 2009, but the company on its website notes that its management team has over 20 years’ experience in emerging markets, having previously built the leading emerging markets corporate communications and government affairs consultancy in 21 countries across Eastern Europe.BlackBerry in June reported a first quarter loss and warned of future losses despite releasing its make-or-break new smartphones this year. Its Latin America segment saw revenue decline by six per cent, attributed to Venezuela foreign currency restrictions negatively impacting US$72 million of service revenue recognition in the first quarter. The BlackBerry, introduced in 1999, was once the dominant smartphone for on-the-go business people. But it lost its cachet not long after Apple released the first iPhone in 2007. Apple’s device reset expectations for what a smartphone can do. RIM promised to catch up while developing a new software system called BlackBerry 10, which uses technology it got through its 2010 purchase of QNX Software Systems. But the company took more than two years to unveil new phones that were redesigned for the multimedia, Internet browsing and apps experience that customers now demand. During that time, RIM cut more than 5,000 jobs and saw shareholder wealth of more than US$70 billion vanish.RIM’s BlackBerry 10 operating system is critical to the company’s comeback. New phones running the BlackBerry 10 software began selling around the world this year. The BlackBerry Z10, a touch screen model, and the Q10, which sports a keyboard, have received positive reviews, but there was a delay in getting them to the market in the US.

$36m upgrade for Cornwall Regional Hospital dialysis unit

Latest News

Sunday, August 04, 2013 | 9:35 AM

ST JAMES, Jamaica — Thirty six million dollars is to be spent to expand the dialysis unit at the Cornwall Regional Hospital in St James. Minister of Health Dr Fenton Ferguson at the contract signing ceremony on Friday, August 2, 2013 said that he was excited about the project, especially since the area of dialysis has had limited capacity even with the high demand.“The Cornwall Regional Hospital has over the years been expanding the dialysis unit as the demand for services continued to increase. The unit moved from five work stations in 1998 to 12 and stands at 18 today,” Dr Ferguson said. “After this expansion and relocation to the ground floor of the hospital, it is expected that there will be an additional seven work stations bringing the total to 25 and increasing the usage from 220 to 325 dialysis episodes for patients each week,” he added. The project is being funded by the National Health Fund.Dr Ferguson said the expansion of the unit bears even greater significance given the prevalence of non-communicable diseases particularly diabetes which is a major risk factor for kidney failure. “Diabetes was ranked the leading cause of death among women and the third leading cause of death for men in 2009. In addition, non-communicable diseases account for upwards of 60 percent of deaths in Jamaica annually. In the process we spend in excess of US$170 million per annum in this area.”Like our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/jamaicaobserverFollow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/JamaicaObserver

Kohler extends regional footprint through Tile City

MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica – TILE City and Home Centre has formed an exclusive distribution partnership with American kitchen and bath products manufacturer, Kohler.

The local home improvement store hopes to open a 4,000-square-foot showroom in November. The Kohler Signature Store will be owned and operated by Tile City and will be located beside Tile City’s outlet in Constant Spring, Kingston.Architects are in the final stage of designing the facility, according to Jaleel Handal, Tile City’s managing director.Handal declined to disclose the cost of the new showroom, but told Caribbean Business Report that the investment is of a “reasonable size” and is a worthwhile venture based on consumer demand.“The functionality of the products, along with their unique qualities are in keeping with current trends — people have been asking for Kohler products,” Handal said at a launch ceremony held at Cru Bar.For instance, Kohler’s Moxie showerhead and wireless speaker, which brings electronics to the shower, allowing customers to pair it with devices such as a BlackBerry or iPhone as far as 25 feet away from the bathroom, is expected to be a hit on the domestic market. The product is fully functional outside the shower, and can be used as another speaker.Products such as the Moxie showerhead entice consumers and are sold at the mid-price point, said Jim Lewis, director, emerging and strategic markets of Kohler for kitchen and bath Americas.“Jamaica is the largest market where we didn’t have a direct distributor and Jamaican buyers take style and quality seriously,” he said. “Having products here and in stock is ideal.”The company, which makes 30,000 products, also has distributors in the Cayman Islands, the Bahamas, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. If an architect or designer wanted the products, they had to go to Miami for it, according to the Kohler director.Furthermore, Kohler believed the local market had been lacking a high quality plumbing brand, said Philip Almeida, Kohler’s manager of sales and marketing in the Caribbean, Central and Latin America. After meeting with Tile City, it was instantly noted that the local company’s strategy was to also bring high quality to the market and not necessarily volumes, he said.Tile City offers a key differentiator from competitors in that they carry a large inventory of high-end products that many other suppliers can only offer through special orders. Adding Kohler to the mix puts Tile City’s offering in a class of its own in Jamaica, Kohler said.Tile City was founded in 1999 and currently has two showrooms, one in Kingston and one in St Catherine. The company originally sold tiles, but in 2005, expanded through a partnership with the Do It Best Corp, a major US hardware company. Philip Almeida, manager of sales and marketing in the Caribbean, Central and Latin America for Kohler, shows off the Moxie showerhead and wireless speaker, which syncs shower and electronics. Kohler products should be available later this year in Jamaica through Tile City Home and Centre, the sole distributor of the Kohler brand. (PHOTO: JOSEPH WELLINGTON)
