Obama meets with leaders of new GOP-run Congress - VIDEO: Obama holds bipartisan meeting

President Barack Obama and Republican congressional leaders paid lip service to the notion of bipartisanship in their first meeting of the year Tuesday, but neither side appeared to give ground on GOP priorities that have been met with a flurry of veto threats from the White House.

As he opened Tuesday’s meeting, Obama urged leaders to stake out areas of compromise on trade, tax reform and cybersecurity, saying he was hopeful that “a spirit of cooperation and putting America first” will prevail. The president was flanked by House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, the two Republicans now in charge on Capitol Hill.

Obama’s sunny spin on Washington’s new power dynamic was at odds with much of what has played out in the week since the new Congress was seated. Republicans have taken aim at core elements of the president’s agenda, including legislation on immigration and health care that the White House has vowed to veto.

Boehner appeared to double down on the Republican strategy in Tuesday’s meeting. His office said the Ohio Republican made clear that the House would push forward on a bill that would block the president’s executive actions on immigration and also urged the president to sign a bill approving construction of the Keystone XL pipeline.

The Keystone measure and immigration bill are among the five veto threats the White House has issued in the week since Congress returned to Washington.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest took a sharper tone in discussing Republicans than the president, saying the GOP’s approach to the opening days of the new Congress raises questions “about how serious they are about trying to work with the president.”

“In the first five days that they’ve been in session, they’ve advanced five pieces of legislation all the way to the rules committee that they already know this president strongly opposes,” Earnest said.

Despite the areas of disagreement, the White House and Boehner both raised the prospect of working together on trade, overhauling the nation’s complex tax code, and cybersecurity.

The president renewed his call for Congress to pass legislation encouraging the private sector to share cyberthreat data with the government and shield companies from lawsuits if they opt to do so.

“I think we agreed that this is an area where we can work hard together, get some legislation done and make sure that we are much more effective in protecting the American people from these kinds of cyberattacks,” Obama said.

Boehner’s office concurred, saying “Republicans are ready to work with both parties to address this important issue and put some common-sense measures on the president’s desk.”

Absent from Tuesday’s meeting was Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., who suffered an injury during a recent workout and has not yet returned to Capitol Hill.

The White House said the president also updated lawmakers on foreign policy issues, including the military campaign against Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria. Obama has called on Congress to vote on a new authorization for use of military force that would be a guidepost for that effort. Boehner and other Republicans have said they want the White House to write the authorization, then send it to Congress for votes.

The White House said the president was also likely to update lawmakers on foreign policy issues, including the military campaign against Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria.

Chelsea sole leaders after City slip

LONDON, England (AFP) — Chelsea took sole possession of first place in the Premier League table after they beat Newcastle United 2-0 yesterday and Manchester City drew 1-1 at Everton.

Chelsea began the day dead-level with City, but with the defending champions dropping points for only the second time in 10 matches, Jose Mourinho’s side moved two points clear.

Newcastle had beaten Chelsea 2-1 in the reverse fixture and despite still being without a manager following Alan Pardew’s departure, they looked capable of pulling off a repeat in the first half at Stamford Bridge.

Petr Cech was deputising in goal for Chelsea due to a finger injury to Thibaut Courtois and he had to save from Remy Cabella and Yoan Gouffran, while Moussa Sissoko powered a shot against the post.

Chelsea lost Cesar Azpilicueta to an apparent groin injury in the 37th minute, but they went ahead six minutes later when Oscar tapped in Branislav Ivanovic’s cross after Willian took a quick corner.

Mourinho’s team were far from their best, but they added a delightfully constructed second goal just before the hour, with Diego Costa gathering a clever back-heel from Oscar and drilling in his 15th goal of the campaign.

“You always want to play well, but that’s not always possible,” said Chelsea assistant coach Steve Holland.

“It is important that when you don’t play as well as you’d like to, you still get the result.”

At Goodison Park, Everton enjoyed the best of the first half against City, with Seamus Coleman hitting the bar.

City went ahead in the 74th minute when Fernandinho helped a deflected shot from David Silva over the line with his head, but Steven Naismith equalised four minutes later, glancing home a free-kick from Leighton Baines.

Tottenham Hotspur squandered an opportunity to climb into the top four after losing 1-2 at Pardew’s Crystal Palace, who clambered out of the relegation zone.

Harry Kane’s low drive put Tottenham ahead in the 49th minute, but Dwight Gayle equalised from the penalty spot before Jason Puncheon thrashed in an 80th-minute winner.

It was Spurs’ first defeat in seven games and left Mauricio Pochettino’s side in fifth place, two points below Southampton, who visit third-placed Manchester United today.

Serbian winger Lazar Markovic scored his first league goal as improving Liverpool closed to within four points of the top four by winning 1-0 at Sunderland, who had Liam Bridcutt sent off for two bookable offences.

West Ham United spurned a chance to climb to fifth place after being held to a 1-1 draw at Swansea City.

Andy Carroll put West Ham ahead in the 43rd minute with a fine effort, chesting down a high ball and then dancing across the box before slamming a left-foot shot into the top-right corner from 15 yards.

But Swansea equalised in the 74th minute when a header from France striker Bafetimbi Gomis hit the post, struck West Ham midfielder Mark Noble and rebounded into the net for an own goal.

Gomis celebrated by displaying a France flag in tribute to the victims of this week’s Islamist killing spree in Paris.

Burnley climbed out of the relegation zone and dragged Queens Park Rangers into the bottom three with a 2-1 home win over Harry Redknapp’s side.

Scott Arfield’s opener was cancelled out by a penalty from former Burnley striker Charlie Austin, but Danny Ings gave the hosts victory in the 37th minute by rolling the ball past Rob Green after a neat piece of control.

Bottom club Leicester City closed to within three points of safety by winning 1-0 at home to Aston Villa, with Paul Konchesky slamming in the only goal in first-half stoppage time.

Leicester’s Matty James and Villa’s Ciaran Clark were sent off in added time after clashing in the centre circle.

Leaders Cavalier welcome H"View as CHIKV forces more postponements

BY SANJAY MYERS Observer staff reporter

Sunday, October 12, 2014

More postponements will affect the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) schedule as the competition continues with a mere four matches between today and tomorrow.

The game between parish rivals Sporting Central Academy and Humble Lion FC at the Juici Park in Clarendon has been put off.

A release from the competition organisers said the Sporting Central squad has been “seriously affected” by suspected cases of the mosquito-transmitted chikungunya virus.

The match at the Drewsland Stadium between Waterhouse FC and visitors Tivoli Gardens FC is also postponed because the former have several players on national duty with the Reggae Boyz.

In an encounter today which could provide entertaining football, Cavalier SC, surprise leaders of the RSPL, host the 2012-13 champions Harbour View FC. The game is slated to start at 5:00 pm at the Stadium East playing field.

The Andrew Hines-coached Harbour View have not had the best of starts to this season, drawing twice and losing once in their four games to be in fifth place on five points. But their confidence should be helped by the 4-1 beating of Boys’ Town FC in their most recent outing. Ranique Muir scored three times in that encounter.

Cavalier, guided by head coach Rudolph Speid, have predominantly been a mid-table club the last few seasons, but are unbeaten so far this campaign and currently top the standings with 11 points from five matches.

In a 3:30 pm start, first-time RSPL entrants Barbican FC entertain the reigning champions Montego Bay United at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona Bowl.

Barbican, who drew their opening two games before being hammered 4-0 by Rivoli United last time out, are in 11th place on two points.

Eighth-placed Montego Bay have not set the competition alight either, mustering four points from four matches including a win, a draw and two defeats.

In today’s other game, sixth-placed Reno FC (five points) welcome second-placed Rivoli United (eight points).

Both teams have played four games, but while Rivoli are unbeaten with two wins and as many draws, Reno have only accomplished one victory, alongside a loss and two draws.

Tomorrow’s televised RSPL Monday Night game will see Trench Town-based arch-rivals Boys’ Town FC (four points) and Arnett Gardens FC clashing at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex in a kick-off set for 9:15 pm.

Arnett Gardens are third with seven points, while Boys’ Town, languishing at the other end of the table, are ninth with four points.

RSPL games today

3:30 pm — Barbican vs Montego Bay @ UWI Mona Bowl

3:30 pm — Reno vs Rivoli United @ Frome Complex

5:00 pm — Cavalier vs Harbour View @ Stadium East

RSPL game tomorrow

9:15 pm — Boys’ Town vs Arnett Gardens @ Anthony Spaulding Complex

Leaders look to cement places in next round

BY PAUL A REID Observer writer

Saturday, October 11, 2014

MAY PEN, Clarendon — Half of the 16 spots in the expanded quarter-finals of the ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup football competition could be filled after this afternoon’s second round of matches in the Inter-zone round.

The top two teams in each of the eight zones will advance to the next round and eight of the nine schools which scored wins in Wednesday’s first set of games could secure a place in the quarter-finals.

The race, however, will be for the coveted place in the first round of the inaugural Lime Super Cup Knockout that offers the winners $1 million plus an impressive crystal trophy. Only the winners of the zones will be eligible for the LIME Super Cup, however, and they will battle the top eight from the Manning Cup.

Today, former champions Glenmuir High and St James High will clash in the feature game of the round in the second game of a double header at Juici Field in May Pen where the winner will advance, while another seven schools will also advance with wins.

Petersfield from Zone 1, Frome from Zone 2, defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) and Manchester from Zone 3, Clarendon College from Zone 4, Cedric Titus and Old Harbour from Zone 5 were winners on Wednesday and are in the drivers’ seats in the zones.

Glenmuir High and St James, who both advanced to the Inter-zone round via different routes, were winners on Wednesday and no quarters will be asked and none given in today’s game that could decide the zone winners.

Glenmuir, winners of Zone M in the first round, were 2-0 winners over Morant Bay High, while St James High, one of the best third-placed teams, blanked another former champion Vere Technical 3-0.

Defending champions STETHS along with Manchester High will start favourites to win their games in Zone 3 against Edwin Allen High and Holmwood Technical, respectively, and set up a winner-take-all clash next Tuesday.

Edwin Allen High are coming off a 0-2 loss to Manchester High on Wednesday and will have to create the biggest upset of the season to deny STETHS in their own backyard.

Holmwood Technical will also need to lift their game several levels if they hope to keep their chances of advancing alive at the expense of Manchester High.

At Jarrett Park, Petersfield High will be confident coming off a win over a depleted Rusea’s High team but will face a Cornwall College team that was held goalless for the first time this season and will be desperate for goals.

Cornwall College led the competition with 33 goals in the first round but a combination of poor finishing and excellent goalkeeping by Muschett’s David Swaby frustrated them for 90 minutes at Jarrett Park on Wednesday. Today, top scorers Jourdaine Fletcher and Alrick Ottey, who have combined for 16 goals, will resume their hunt for goals against Petersfield.

In the first game at Jarrett Park, Muschett High will seek to keep their qualifying hopes alive as they take on a Rusea’s team that lost its three best players to the National Under-17 team preparing for a World Cup qualifying tournament in Haiti later this month.

Green Pond High have not won any of the four Inter-zone games played between last year and this year and will face a tough Frome Technical team at Frome Sports Grounds.

Frome are coming off a win over a good Godfrey Stewart team and their confidence will be up against Green Pond in a meeting between the teams for the first time.

Clarendon College will be odds on favourites to beat Christiana High at Kirkvine and book their place from Zone 4 ,while Cedric Titus and Old Harbour High are also expected to get by Fair Prospect and Brimmervale, respectively, in Zone 5.

Garvey Maceo will have their sights set on returning to the finals after last year’s meltdown against STETHS and should make another step in that direction when they take on first-time Inter-zone qualifiers Ewarton High at the Bramwell Clarke Complex in Linstead.

The race in Zone 6 is wide open after both games ended in draws on Wednesday, leaving all four teams on one point each.

Another first-time Inter-zone qualifier Oracabessa High will face former champions Dinthill Technical at the Oracabessa Community Centre in one game with Marcus Garvey High and Titchfield meeting at Drax Hall in the other game.

Games today

Christiana vs Clarendon College @ Kirkvine @ 1:00 pm

Rusea’s vs Muschett @ Jarrett Park @ 1:00 pm

Cornwall College vs Petersfield High @ Jarrett Park @ 3:00 pm

Frome Tech vs Green Pond High @ Frome @ 3:00 pm

STETHS vs Edwin Allen @ STETHS @ 3:00 pm

Japanese prime minister meets with CARICOM leaders today

shinzo-abe-740 Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, Monday July 28, 2014, CMC – Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Sunday began an official two-day visit to Trinidad and Tobago holding talks with Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar.

A statement issued afterwards said that the two leaders had discussed a wide range of issues including possible Japanese investment in the oil-rich twin island Republic and the possibility of Port-of-Spain opening an embassy in Tokyo.

Abe, whose first ever visit here forms part of his trip to Latin America and the Caribbean, will meet with Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders on Monday for talks that the Guyana-based CARICOM Secretariat said would include areas such as climate change, technical cooperation, trade and investment.

The CARICOM Secretariat said that the half-day summit is also expected to provide an opportunity for discussions on the upcoming Third United Nations Conference on Small Island States to be held in Samoa in September.

“The summit provides a timely opportunity to advance CARICOM’s priorities in these areas and for fostering solidarity between CARICOM and Japan,” the statement said.

Abe, who was met on arrival by Foreign Minister Winston Dookeran, expressed his gratitude to the Trinidad and Tobago government for its decision to waive entry visa requirements for Japanese nationals coming here to conduct business for a maximum period of 90 days.

According to the statement issued by the Office of the Prime Minister, the two government leaders discussed the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) which establishes international standards for the movement of conventional arms and ammunition across borders. Both Japan and Trinidad and Tobago signed the treaty in 2013.

“In the meeting, Prime Minister Persad Bissessar sought the support of the Japanese Government to support Trinidad and Tobago’s bid to host the ATT Secretariat,” the statement said, adding that Port of Spain has also “recognised Japan’s and Trinidad and Tobago’s bid for non-permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council.”

The statement noted that during the discussions, Prime Minister Abe raised the matter of deepening bilateral relations and requested that Trinidad and Tobago consider opening an embassy in Tokyo.

“The Prime Minister promised to immediately engage in discussions with the Minister of Foreign Affairs on this issue.

“Discussions between the two Prime Ministers also focused on Trinidad and Tobago as an attractive destination for trade and investment; in particular, the recent launch of the Tamana Intech Park, the first science and technology park in the Caribbean.”

Prime Minister Persad Bissessar is encouraging Japanese firms to take up residency, particularly firms involved in the areas of ICTs, Clean Technologies, and Agro-processing.

The statement said that the Minister of Trade, Industry, Investment and Communications, Vasant Bharath, would pursue discussions with relevant members of the delegation during their stay.

“The Japanese Prime Minister agreed to consider further areas of cooperation in such ventures,” the statement said, quoting Prime Minister Persad Bissessar as noting the “positive impact on the South-Western peninsula with regard to job creation by the introduction of the dimethyl ether (DME) Project, which has been established by the Massy Group, the Mitsubishi Corporation, and Mitsubishi Gas Chemical”.

The US$850 million project is situated at la Brea, south of here.

The statement said that Japan would also host the fourth Japan/CARICOM Foreign Ministers Forum. It gave no date.

Suriname leader"s son in drugs case

30 August 2013 Last updated at 20:48 ET August, 2003 Dino Bouterse, seen here arriving at court in 2003, served an earlier prison sentence on multiple charges The son of Suriname’s president has appeared before a court in the United States, charged with drug and weapons trafficking.

Dino Bouterse pleaded not guilty in a federal court in New York.

Mr Bouterse was arrested in Panama on Thursday and swiftly handed over to American agents.

His arrest came as his father, President Desi Bouterse, hosted the Unasur summit of South American leaders.

Dino Bouterse, who was head of Suriname’s anti-terrorism unit, was arrested at Panama City international airport while travelling on a diplomatic passport.

US officials said Mr Bouterse had been indicted on drug and weapons charges, including cocaine trafficking.

He had been sentenced to eight years in prison in 2005, after being found guilty of trafficking in drugs, weapons and stolen luxury cars.

Mr Bouterse was released three years later for good behaviour and was later named director of Suriname’s Counter Terrorist Unit.

His father Desi (for Desire), a former coup leader, was elected president of Suriname in 2010.

He was accused of numerous human rights violations in the 1980s but was given immunity by parliament in 2012.

In 2000, President Bouterse was himself convicted in absentia of drug trafficking by a court in the Netherlands.

He has always denied the charges.

Get rid of poor leaders, Dr Paul Wright advises

OUTSPOKEN sports medical doctor Paul Wright yesterday broadsided the country’s leaders, saying that they have been doing a poor job and urged Jamaicans to get rid of them for the benefit of the country.

Dr Wright, who was a guest at the weekly Jamaica Observer Monday Exchange, framed his comments against the backdrop of the outstanding performance of Jamaica’s track and field team at the just concluded 14th IAAF World Championships in Russia.“Unless we the people get leadership right, we not going anywhere,” Dr Wright said. “We have in front of us examples of leaders who do things (right), and leaders around us who do nothing but pander to the crowd and see how I can get back (in power) next time.“Anywhere we go in the world, we are the best; it is the leaders who are causing our problems and we have to get rid of them,” he asserted firmly. The Jamaican team finished the Championships with six gold medals, two silver and a bronze to place third on the medals table behind the United States and Russia. In fact, Jamaica ended with the same number of gold medals as the US, which has a population 100 times larger than Jamaica’s, an achievement that Dr Wright described as “a tremendous performance”.“I believe leadership is what has caused track and field to reach this far. The people who were in charge of track and field understood what it needed to become great and they did it,” he said.“They didn’t suffer stupidity or favouritism, they did it and we are now reaping the success for that,” Dr Wright noted. “Herb McKenley and Teddy McCook, those are names that stand out for me and those guys didn’t accept foolishness. (They) got rid of those who were not going to help and promoted those who were going to help and they brought in all the things we are seeing today.”Dr Wright, who is the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission’s lead control officer, said the outstanding leadership displayed by the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association at the World Championships was evident and pointed to the women’s 4x100m relay team as an example. The team took the gold medal on Sunday in a new national record of 41.29 seconds, which is the second fastest time in history, behind the Americans’ 40.82 done at the 2012 London Olympics. That Jamaican team, he noted, was not as talented has previous teams.“When you look at the 4x100m women — Carrie Russell, Schillonie Calvert, Kerron Stewart and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce — they ran faster than any other Jamaican woman in the history of track and field,” Dr Wright noted.“They didn’t have any issues of who must start or run last, none of that was there. They were just happy to run, and it has something to do with leadership — the group that was there in Moscow that was able to get people to accept what was going on, and it worked,” he said.Dr Paul Auden (left) looks on as Dr Paul Wright as addresses yesterday’s Jamaica Observer Monday Exchange of editors and reporter at the newspaper’s headquarters in Kingston.
