Jamaica has been boosting exports to Caricom so far this year. Data released by the Statistical Institute of Jamaica, Statin, show exports to the region are up 9.5% over last year. Between January and July, exports were valued at US$39 million U.S.dollars. Imports from the region were higher as well, going up by US$5 million to US$ 426 million. Goods bought from Caricom account for 15% of Jamaica’s imports while the region takes 5% of Jamaica’s exports. In the meantime, Statin has revised the performance of the manufacturing sector saying it grew 4% compared to earlier estimates that it declined by a percentStatin says the performance was due to the sector benefiting from strong growth in sugar production and petroleum refining. Sugar production in the second quarter was more than double its output last year while petroleum refining was up 26%.
