Union supports calls for boycott Thursday, July 11, 2013 | 10:13 AM

KINGSTON, Jamaica — President of the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU) Senator Kavan Gayle has labelled as “insensitive and unbearable” the recent increases in Highway 2000 toll rates and supported calls for a boycott.Senator Gayle argued that with so many private and especially public sector workers living in and commuting daily from areas such as Clarendon, Portmore, Old Harbour and Spanish Town [and] “with a population made up of so many professionals and civil servants, this toll increase will have a devastating impact on workers and their families.”“Most workers have gotten minimal, if any increases in pay for the past few years so this added burden of the toll increases, coupled with the continuously record breaking gas prices will undoubtedly cripple the finances of many families,” Gayle charged. He also pointed out that there was “no amenable alternate route from these areas, therefore the toll road became compulsory for most.”“The Government cannot be allowed to raid the underpaid anymore,” said Gayle. The BITU has suggested that alternatives, such as amendments to the current repayment plan for the toll road operators be looked at. Senator Gayle also suggested that the Government use its conscience and have the increase rescinded. Failing this, “the BITU is urging toll road users to unite and support calls for action including a boycott, until the Government gives the due regard for the plight of the workers and all citizens.”Like our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/jamaicaobserverFollow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/JamaicaObserver
