Everard OwenWednesday, July 10, 2013Anastasia Le-Roy and Nicholas Maitland provided Jamaica with two bronze medals in the 400 metres at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia yesterday.Le-Roy clocked 51.72 seconds for third place behind the Russian pair of Kesenia Ustalovia, who won in a season’s best 50.60 seconds, and Alena Tamkeva, who registered a personal best 51.17 seconds.Maitland ran a personal best of 45.63 seconds behind winner Vladimir Krasnov, of Russia, who timed a season’s best 45.49 seconds, and Brazilian Anderson Henriques (45.50 seconds).Meanwhile, triple jumper Shaneika Thomas leapt 15.58 metres to move to tomorrow’s final.Also, defending champion Rasheed Dwyer won his two rounds yesterday in the men’s 200 metres, in 21.00 and 21.07 seconds, respectively. The semi-final and final will be today.Danille Williams will face the starter today in heat three of the 100m hurdles, and Travis Smikle will be in round one of the men’s discus.Maurice Wilson, Le-Roy’s coach at G C Foster, expressed delight when he spoke to the Jamaica Observer. “She has performed well coming off a major championship where persons had to perform at the highest level and then to get back ready within a week to perform at another major championship, I just have to give credit to those there for performing for their various colleges and universities,” he said.“I expect her to do better as it is obvious that she has recovered well from her earlier setback and I expect her to do extremely well as she gets some more rest.”Russia lead the athletics medals table with 24, followed by Ukraine with six, South Africa with four, and Jamaica in 14th with two.LE-ROY… clocked 51.72 seconds for third place
