— EVERARD OWENFriday, July 12, 2013PORT ANTONIO, Portland — Jamaican collegiate athletes failed to pick up a medal yesterday at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia.Jamaica’s lone competitor for the day Shaneika Thomas, who qualified with 13.58 metres and was the seventh best jumper at the championship, moved up one place to sixth, leaping less than her qualifying jump 13.53 metres and doing all six jumps legally. She did the 15.53 metres on her first attempt.A new championship record was set by the winner Russian Ekaterina Koneva 14.82 metres to better another Russian record 14.81 metres by Tatinia Lebedeva. Second was Anna Jagaciak (Poland) 14.21 metres and the Romanian Carmen Cristina Toma 14.14 metres — both season’s best.Today, Jamaica’s Traves Smikle will seek to add to his nation’s four medals when he throws in the discus final on the final day of track and field athletics this morning.Smikle, who threw 58.96 metres to qualify, was third in his round but has the sixth best throw going into the final and will be looking to better this.The World Youth bronze medallist is used to competition and will be looking forward to being on the medal podium. Smikle has thrown over 60 metres and got to the ‘A’ standard for another trip to Russia next month.Smikle, who has been plagued with injuries this season, has thrown 63.48 metres in April.
