Dancehall artiste Konshens, has stated that he believes that incarcerated deejay Vybz Kartel is the most lyrical Jamaican artiste.
According to the singjay, who made the comment during an interview with United States based hip-hop website VLADTV.com, Vybz Kartel is ahead of his peers.
Konshens during the interview also disagreed with the interviewer, who said that reggae/dancehall artistes are not usually discussed in conversations based on lyrical capability.
The artiste stated that Jamaican language might not be understood by a lot of countries. However, reggae/dancehall acts are very skilled with their word play.
“I think that’s unfair. I think if people don’t bring up dancehall and reggae acts in discussions about lyrics that is unfair. I think it’s a case where most people don’t understand what they are saying. But, if you really listen to some of the artistes over the years, you will be surprised. But, Vybz Kartel is definitely the most lyrical dancehall artiste ever … for me. I don’t speak for just one style of lyrics and I would say Beres Hammond is the second and I would put myself in it,” Konshens said.
The singjay also said reggae music is going through a tough period commercially. However, the genre would bounce back. He also highlighted Chronixx, Javada, Darrio and Delus as promising acts.
Vybz Kartel is serving a life sentence in prison, however, the artiste has still managed to shine ahead of most of his peers in the music industry with a long list of hits including Do Di Maths, Nuh TrustPeople, Cya Test We, Ignite The World, Business and Without Money.
Local producer TJ of TJ Records recently released a new project for the deejay called Viking, which is a shortened version for Vybz Is King. The project is currently being distributed by 21st Hapilos.
Konshens was recently a guest judge at Hennessy’s Bartender Competition.
