Wigton Windfarm to be expanded again

The Government of Jamaica is to undertake further expansion of the Wigton Windfarm in Rose Hill, Manchester, which should result in the reduction of 37,100  barrels of  imported oil, and saving of  J$400 million per year.

Julian Robinson, Minister of State in the Ministry of Science, Technology, Mining & Energy, announcing the expansion plan on Monday, said the enlarged facility will produce 63,072 Megawatt hours per year.

Mr. Robinson was delivering the opening address at a two-day Alternative Energy Expo, at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, in New Kingston.

This will be the third phase of the ongoing development of Wigton.

It initially consisted of 23 wind turbines. Nine turbines were added in phase two, in 2010, bringing the windfarm’s current capacity to 38.7 megawatts.
